In order to cleanse  the medical & healthcare education in India , a task force of the Union health ministry has decided to scrap all regulatory bodies, including the MCI, DCI, PCI, RCI & NCI . There will instead be a single regulatory body — National Council for Human Resources in Health (NCHRH)— which will oversee seven departments related to medicine, nursing, dentistry, rehabilitation and physiotherapy, pharmacy, public health and allied health sciences. But the same initiative has been given a set-back by the PM’s decision to forward the same to state governments for recommendation & opinion.

But if we look at the structure of different council & their working would it is easy to start a single regulatory body to control all the medical education streams in India.

The step is wrong as it will promote a single step policy. Vs The step is right as it will make the system transparent.

The step is totally wrong as it will promote a single step policy for starting & regulating different medical & paramedical education and ultimately supporting the private education in India.

I personally agree with the decision taken by Ministry of Health. Because all of us in the medical field in India know that the Medical, Dental Councils etc., have become bloated bureaucracies that do very little for their members. So the  proposes to conduct a national-level exit examination as a standardized post-graduation test for appointment in academic institutions is a good idea. Let us hope that at a time when nations like the USA and UK are involved in overhauling and streamlining their health care systems, we in India can start the process too.

In a state where there are 400 engineering colleges why restrict medical colleges to 10? The move by government should liberalise the medical education with at least one medical college in every district to start with - like the government of Tamil Nadu is setting up now. If a professor in engineering can educate 100 students why cannot a professor in medicine restrict it to a handful. This unfounded restriction to safeguard quality has only helping vested interests to rake in money with MBBS seats selling for 20 lakhs and MD/MS seats raking in Rs 1 crore as capitation fees.

Let the quantity florish and let the market decide on quality.

A major shake out is necessary if India wants to improve its health delivery systems. Without numbers the billion Indians will be denied even the basic minimum healthcare.
