Ambush marketing is a means of getting the maximum bang for the buck while stealing some of a rival's thunder. It is an effort by an unauthorised party to appropriate the goodwill of an event at the expense of another company's (usually a rival's) association with the event.

It occurs at two levels — onsite and on media. Onsite ambush marketing occurs at the event itself and the area surrounding it, including the approach roads and so on, and covers everything from refreshments, clothing, billboards, posters, stalls and so on.

I think, ambush marketing works to some extent. It can occur through sponsorships of spots, scrolls, logo positions and so on, on the media used to cover the event (generally TV, radio or press). For example, L'Oreal hair colour ads appearing during the Lakme India Fashion Week broadcasts.

So, the intention here is to atrract the customers which is almost done by doing ambush activities.

Thanks Meena for referring this good topic. Knowingly or unknowingly we are victims of ambush marketing. But it doesn't work all the times. Sometimes the ads are not able to create that big impact as desired.

More over ambush marketing though cost effective but is a cheap way of promoting the product. It could also have many legal consequences. Sometimes the ads don't deliver the message properly & the whole effort goes in vain.

Definitely ambush marketing works. If it had'nt worked the term itself would not have come out.Sneaking, copying, posing is something which is "human' and this human element is very much part of any marketing strategy which no marketer would like to lose. Of course the originator loses some of his revenues and there are other hidden losses but the originator or the innovator should not worry about it. Ambush marketing works especially in India and those developing countries which are underdeveloped, low literacy rate, high expectations, high exposure to outside world, lower incomes prevalence of corruption , etc.

in the wild not all animals depend on ambushing their prey, similarly this style of marketing has its adverse effects, however given the right scenario and having the right plan in place it may do well.also this style of marketing works for company's that are trying to re-enter the arena of fame that was once lost.

MANY COMPANIES HAVE STARTED FOLLOWING IT.SO IT MUST BE WORKING TO THEIR ADVANTAGE.

ONE WOULD LIKE TO RECALL THE DAYS,NOT LONG BACK, A PROGRAMME IN T.V SPONSORED BY  X BRAND WILL NOT HAVE ADS FROM OTHER MANUFACTURERS IN THE SAME INDUSTRY.

According to my view it's work very effectively where is FMCG products are concerned with my experience is very effective, during the relaunch of the product ,also  sent across the message to the target group in specific town,on the other  hand with the ambush marketing we can give the assurance of % the availability of  the product

YES IT WORKS... ITS LIKE TERRORISM & TERRORISM DOES SEEM TO WORK.

Like they say... Everything is Fair in Love, War & Business !

Ambush Marketing has its own Positive Punch of catching a Consumer 'UNAWARE'... lets take an example of a Cricket Match. The way to the stadium is totally covered by X BRAND... & so is the inside Ground. By the time a match viewer reaches the stadium & settles down in His/Her seat...             His / Her mind is captured by that X BRAND.

AMBUSH HAS BEEN DONE & OBJECTIVE ACHIEVED !

Happy Debating Friends !

Thanks for invite Meena,

Ambush marketing is a concept. Like any concept it is the efficiency of processes that determine success or failure it surely can not be universally applicable or even useful.

Yes I agree with Meena but in our country the ambush marketing works since it becomes the talk of the town like the JET & Kingfisher Add. I am of the openion it should be done in sophisticated way as Meena has sited an example.

I agree with you Meena, Ambush marketing is quite an Efficient method of Awareness. The advert shown above is one of the Killer mode of the Ambush marketing & it creates a lot of effect in the mind of the consumers.

Ambush Marketing may give a small mileage if both the rivals are of equal stature. A new entrant into a niche market , may not be able to achieve the creditibility enhancement that he seeks, through this approach.

Considering that Advertisement is a means of communicating with a very well defined Target Group , "a niche", it will fail to create the correct perception of 'VALUE" of their product in the minds of this Target Group- in contrast to that of the competitor. ie. the PRODUCT DIFFERENTIATION EFFORT is likely to get lost. It will, probably, end up creating a DISSONANCE in the minds of the customer.i

Even I support to what jayant said. Finally, till when you can hide the truth. One other day, everthyng has to be transperent since then the effort taken to gain the confidence of the public goes vain.

It ends in mal-practice. Have you seen it in FIFA2010, between Netherland Vs Denmark? . A total violation of norms & rules of FIFA, an Ambush Marketing was done by a Dutch company( a brewer) ended up in suing a case for compensation. For details, see it in  my facebook(armofi) .

Yes, I'm in agreement with Jayant. Ambush is not a preferred & desirable way of promoting your product. If your product is good then it will promote itself no need for going any illegal or undesirable way/method.
