Apple's market capitalization topped Microsoft's for the first time, $223 billion to Microsoft's $219.3 billion. They may trade places for a while, but it appears that the trend is clear.

Apple surpassing Microsoft symbolizes that dominance has shifted again, away from the desktop and onto portable devices including smartphones, pad computers, portable media players, and devices not yet imagined.

So, Apple topping Microsoft - Is this an end to PC innovation??

Today, buying a desktop PC is about as exciting as purchasing a toaster oven. You know what it needs to do, you know the basic specs, you buy it, and then go about your business. This is as true in IT departments as it is in homes. Desktop PCs have turned into not much more than basic commodities, with not a great deal to differentiate them.

Consider the dearth of great new applications. For most PC-based software, the thrill is gone. Web-based applications and services are where the excitement is.

The PC Market will continue to grow as it is. For professionals, they would prefer desktop as it gives more freedom and flexibility.

Mobility is the new corporate lingo for profitability and efficiency. the PC was a technical marvel as was abacus, but all good things have to give way to greater ones. PC does deserves a place in the history as the creator of mass accessibility.

I totally disagree with that ;-)

Desktop or portable desktop like 22" All-in-One are 5 times more efficient as an iPad or iPhone. I can wait 1 to 8 hours till reaching a hotel or my home and surfing etc 10 times better. (with a 1920 lines 22" portrait modus screen!!!)

Of course, M$ could do a lot to improve all this, before only runniing fter the cloud biz, like a secure and reliable mail client and back up software, and keeping his OS smaller instead of kiddy with aero shit etc...

Bruno

Increase your efficiency, pleasure and health while you spend hours behind a LCD Screen
Ergonomical, ecological, affordable LCD Screens and coming soon All-in-One LCD-PC-TV, easy to carry even 22" and 26", with easy pivot in portrait modus to double area for internet use, office work or portrait photos, nice aluminum design.

I completely endorse Neelam’s view with a rider that present desktops eventually become personal server at home as a hearing post for remote need based saving

I don't quite agree with Neelam's argument here. She says that the era of web based applications is in and PC's are out. How then, does she plan to access the web based application ;) You still need hardware to access the web right? :)

Today, PC's are the only kind of hardware that are sophisticated enough and cost effective enough to give you access to anything and everything through one platform - enterprise apps, personal apps, web based apps, gaming, internet, sophisticated video & audio and the list can go on and on.

If you compare portable hardware like iPad, iPhone etc. to PC's; these are very primitive devices in terms of sophistication, variety of applications supported and cost. Today, if you discard the PC you will need 100's of different devices to support what the PC can support single handed.

Few years down the line, when products like iPad or mobile phones evolve further I am sure they would be a threat to the PC. But right now there is no product that can replace the PC.

There are still many ways for PC innovation as each and every work can not be done by using ipads etc.

I totally disagree with that, because I spend in average for private and commercial use about 12 hours/day behind a screen, 70% surfing the net. When I am abroad, beside from some rare exceptions, I don't need an iPhone, Twitter or iPad, even it could be funny as really a gadget, but I like my desktop (even portable) but connected almost to a 26" screen in portrait modus, and often to 2 or 3 screens all with over Full HD... When using an iPad or more dramtic an iPhone to have a look to my cloud e.mails or facebook profile, I have the same feeling of beeing handicaped as a BMW or Ferrari driver has, if he must take a crowded bus or bicycle... Also, if M$ would do less clouds and better daily Software, may be they could get some market sahres back (not in %, but in value) as too many things stay too user unfriendly and mails or backup programs have both very big lacks of security (datas losses) or reliability (WinMail if very used, means size becomes 10 GB, nearly impossible to back up!) etc... and if it is doing a compression of the database while you have a blue screen, all is broken, it happenned to me, thanks M$ ...
