Is designation really matters in an IT Firm after initial struggle days , share me your viewpoints , if you think yes (It really matters, it gives self recognition ) or no (forget , smart work > any formal designation, i m wht i m )
In my experience, some sort of social heirarchy exists everywhere in the world. Designation does matter where hierarchy exists. But if we take an IT company there isn’t much difference between a project leader and a member of a team but the same doesn’t hold in any govt organization. There's always the difference between executive level, managerial level, VP roles. Egos are the same across the world. May be role differentiation gives clear line of authority.
Designations matters to us. Because we have been accustomed to living in a society where our worth is judged from our designation. It is in our culture. Nothing wrong in it till we are living in this society.
Your project should speak of itself , nothing left in designation. Be broad minded n think of long term ,Believe it or not , once you start playing role to be excellent in your field with proper vision and goals , nothing on this world can stop u .whats in designation ?
I agree that designation does matter. Though it may not be felt within the organization as the people are more or less aware of your roles and your capabilities. But while interacting with clients or in business meetings your designation certainly comes into the picture.
It really does matter that designation of a person represents the quality of work/job responsibilities of a person. on the contrary it might be possible that a person is performing multiple roles in an organization especially in small organizations. Also the designation may vary from organization to organization even in similar industries.
Designations are supposed to represent and give a clue to the person's role in an organization. Given that the role is well defined and apprpriate designation is used, it often tells outsiders (and for that matter internally as well) whom to approach when they need assistance.
Designations also matter to an individual. The change of designation one sees in a CV during an interview, gives a very clear clue as to the growth record of the individual.
Unfortunately, IT companies in the past have given Grandiose designations to thrill employees. Such thrill dont last long because typically the lack of corresponding authority and accountability convinces the employee of the worthlessness of the grandiose designation is short order. Fortunately that tendency is reducing now and such practices seem to be fewer and fewer.
I strongly feel that designation matters a lot. I have one example here, one of my friends who has 12 yrs of experience in technology and is designated as senior engineer failed to get admission in to IIMs executive course just because his designation. Even the profs from the top univs feel this way it certainly shows that designation matters. I have another example, someone whom i know failed to get Canada visa for job because his designation is not project manager though he has all the required skills and performing the role as a PM in his company and moreover certified as PMP. Just because his designation is not PM he was rejected by Canada consulate ...I can go on like this with lot example how and why designation matters. As someone pointed out in this discussion nothing wrong to strive for the designation when we are in such a society.
I believe that people are fickle about designations and don't mind doing the same job. But for some it matters as they have a fancy designation and no matter the pay or the role doesn't change. In India such a trend might be more pronounced towards job designations since a large population and desperate competition on every sphere of life like job marriage, etc. might create a bigger need for more distinctive designations than the rest of the pack. We in India will not and will never sacrifice our urge of showing off. And, one such way of doing so is through our business cards.
My opinion after working 6+ years is, it does not really matter whether you are a DBA, Programmer/Developer, DataWarehouse Specialist, or in Business Development or in Client Relationship Management in a Development company. Software Development & dissemination would always will be a combined team effort, where all the processes have to integrate well to provide time & cost-efficient service.
On the other side acquiring different kinds of specialisation requires different levels of investment like to get a certification in Seibel CRM certification I need to invest atleast 2-2.5 lakhs so based on this, the pay expectation of the employees may differ with respect to the job function.
No Designation doesnot really matter. By the way designation followed by the IT companies, it would be really difficult to differentiate people by their designations. 2 people with same designation would be in different levels.. one person might be lead while other is a team member. Hence the skills and experience learned by the person really matters rather than the designation.
whats in designation.. do ur part in the organisation.. if u work smart u ll get better acknoldgement.. what ever u be like that.. dont go for designation(power)..
Now, this willl be interesting "Learn from the mistakes of others... you can't live long enough to make them all yourselves!! " Life is too short , you cant live life making all the mistakes learning from it .. be smart ... take advice from...
It is said , "If you have a very important task to be delegated , give it to the busiest person. He will find way to manage it ". Now thats what is known as Management.
