When the country has more people in the BPL, and a country which has most number of hungry people than anywhere in the world, is there any need for exporting of agri commodities elsewhere, when there is insufficient of it for us. The current onion price is a stark reflection of it. Does export of agri commodities make sense for populous countries like India??

Hi All,

Basically we have to think for thwo things

two times bread for indians & the Agriculture produce & policies in India

Now everybudy knows that in india there is a lot of agri produce is being rot in FCI godwns. & almost 30% of perishable agri produce is being west in the mandies & farms.

Our policy makers should think for two times bread out of the stock from FCI

Now we shuld think about our policies for our farmers. Every time when a commodities price goes up, all the media & well educated people including govt. starts to be upset. But nobody becomes tense when a farmers produce sold @ Rs.1 or 2/kg. many times farmers got a lot of production but they dont get price for the same & ultimately the gain losses

The media should come in the front when the Onion/Tomato/Garlic & other vegetables price becomes Rs. 1 or 2/Kg & even the cost of production of the said commodities are Rs. 5/Kg.

At that time we enjoys the Pakpora & other dishes in our drawing room & farmer irrigates his fields in the 6 degree Cecilius temp.

If we talk for the ban of Export of agri commodities. it means we will kill our farmers not by bullet but by policies

Please think of the farmers who never became rich, work hard for not only his family but for two times Bread for India

I dont know what Government of India is thinking at the moment but when there is acute shortage of essential commodities then there is no point in exporting these agri commodities in the first place, and recently we saw the food scam, where tons of wheat was left to rot and was not even given to people or even exported.  India itself is having so much of domestic demand then what is the point in exporting these agri commodities, it doesnt make sense at all...

yes export of agri commodities help in better return to farmers. problem in India is not production of agri products but proper management.more than 10% of products got wasted due to poor management. we can import better food management techniques from developed world which will help in increasing the return to farmers which will boost economic growth of the country.

Export of Agri Commodities certainly makes sense provided the major benefits reach the poor agriculturists who in turn plough the proceeds back in production, unlike other self-centred businessmen. We have abundant production - what we lack is distribution and storage. If we develop adequate rail and road network to connect every village to a township to a city, a number of intermediaries who currently thrive at the behest of poor farmers would be eliminated from the chain of network, thereby allowing the major shares to reach the real producers. Export is necessary in order to maintain proper balance of payments and reserves of foreign currency!

Export is a concept that cannot be avoided in the present global market place. For one reason or the other, all items are open to export. That said, however, in a large country like india, the market will bnever understand why you honour export committments when there is a short fall internally. So export is a valid option but only when the internal market is satisfied and kept content both in terms of pricing and supply.

Dear Mr Badri Srinivasan,

Permit me to amend your statement" It is not farmer repeat it is not farmer who benefits" . It is the exporter who benefits and completely denies farmer any benefit whatsoever.

Yogesh,

Agree, on improper storage and transport infrastructure. But a country with manpower surplus can surely export finished products. And India must refrain from exporting any RAW material whatsoever.

Well! it makes perfect business sense to export agro products.... you can only export what you produce .... Japan exports electronics b'coz Japan is good at it. This food shortage is due to lack of storage infrstructure in the country ..... 33% of the produce in fruits and vegetables is wasted in our country . . . For example onion has reason to be expensive this season - we've produced more onion than the projected demand. Ideally prices should have fallen this year but thanks to the nexus of corporate and agri minister - ONION is a luxury for indian masses.

ya i too agree that india should be one of the exporters for agricultural based good,as we all know India is now in it's growing stage and to sustain it's growth it should take part in all major trades and business which can be either through food products or fuels.as per my opinions we indians are self sufficient in certain food grains/crops which needs to be sold than getting rotten in the stores/cold rooms.we must have heard about rotting foodgrains in the cold room it's better to earn the best possible for country than waisting all those.another thing which i would like to site is due it's food grain export(wheat/sugar) india is one among the major food grains producer which adds to the pride of Indians for being a part of such developing and producing country.

we should have open trade policy , how we monitor based on our production is the key. Ag ministry and Planning commission should be made accountable. The tall promises by GOI is nothing but eyewash which is visible in AP by their lukewarm response to accommodate effected farmers and my heartbreaks for so many lifes being lost due to Apathy

Gradually fertile agricultural lands are getting developed into costly real estate. Farmers are finding it difficult to survive. Rural population is migrating to cities in search of livelihood and better living conditions - corruption is rampant - politicians and bureaucrats are having a field day -  if we do not wake up now, it will be too late.

Govt. should not just leave agriculture product to neoliberal market logic.

This is about food security of country. When a large part of our population don't gets nutritional food, its not justified to export agri products in name of earning more.

A country must place its own interests in forefront weather it is for this or other policies.

Unfortunately this is not adhered for several reasons.....

Export of agri commodities lead to better profit margins for the farmers. Hence, a mutually agreeable trade-off needs to be done with the farmers so that they are also benefited apart from meeting the local demands. This is on account of the fact that when there is a food surplus (for some commodities) in the local market, then again it affects the farmers, as the price comes down. At this time, it may be favorable to export those commodities if it is required in the international market.

However, all these aspects are governed by the vagaries of the market conditions and the farmers are left to bear the brunt of this changing market. In order to ensure that the farmers are incentivized sufficiently, the policy should focus on taking care of the farmer's welfare apart from meeting the local market conditions so that in the future, the commodity growth rate will be uniform.

Thanks for the referral, Ravali....

First try to feed our own people then think of feeding the rest. Gone those days when India was self dependent on agri production..it's been evident from soaring prices of essential commodities dependent on agri products that production is not going well and even if it is then surely not the public distribution system. Exports will do nothing but to add Sault to the injury.

It’s true Japan exports electronics but the it is also the fact that Japan has electronic appliances awareness among most of the people regardless of the nature of the work of those ones.

So that example does not make sense. It’s perfectly understandable that we are coping up with high food prices so the export should be lessened until and unless the soaring prices reduce to a normal level.

No matter export is a good business but after all business is for growth not for starvation and undernourishment.

Ya it doesnt make sense, but nothing is in our hand. All good quality food is exported and we are left with bad quality food and therefore have to face scarcity of food substances.

We have the Essential Commodities Act, 1955 to control and regulate prices, but the Act comes into operation only in emergency. Why can't the Legislature design a legislation that looks for and ensures the sustenance of  hunger of millions of stomachs in India. It is high time we deal on this.
