There are numerous measures being taken worldwide to make the hotels more environment friendly. Environment standards and green quality tests are being set for them, but is it in the favor of Hoteliers? Does this make the Hotels more efficient; is this transformation profitable for them?

The HLP (Heat Light Power) costs of Indian Hospitality outlets are highest in the world. It makes the highest percentage of operational costs after the manpower costs in most properties.

By becoming green - they save on the HLP costs, but the effort has to be concious and duly supported at all levels - automation of the energy conservation techniques, better energy efficiency equipment and proper awareness to operational staff. Just by proper switching off the room lights and airconditioning when the room is not in use or when the temp reaches a certain level helps to reduce the Power consumption drastically.

BTW, I do not agree that Mid and small hotels cannot go green, infact use of solar power in many small resorts have been proven to bring down operational costs in many resorts and small properties. In fact, they need it more than the big properties, unfortunately there are not many people wh are aware how to go about it.

If efficiency is in determined in terms of profit then there are hotels which have implemented green techniques and are making profit. These hotels make profit because they provide their guest with a completely different experience.

It is not about succeeding, it is about making an attempt. You can always start step by step. There is nothing impossible when technology innovation is at its peak. Hotels can use energy saving electronic gadgets, dump waste commercially and make profit, use environment friendly products, make minimum and optimum use of resources like water and electricity. I think this definitely help the environment as well as make the Hotel more efficient.

I also find it feasible and it will make the hotels more efficient. Making the Hotel environment friendly means making optimum use of resources, and when you are making optimum use of resources you are saving money.

A good example for this is Hyatt at Olive 8. The net effect of implementing these green design and operational features in the building, they use 32% less water and 20% less power than other similar-sized buildings in its class.

It is definitely possible. Every business has initial high cost at the beginning, but later on it starts making profit. In a similar way implementation of green techniques is a costly investment but will give good returns in the long term.

Superior energy efficiency not only helps protect the environment--it also protects and enhances a property's bottom line and asset value. The benefits of an energy-efficient hotel include greater guest comfort, extended life of equipment, lower operating costs, a cleaner environment and significant financial rewards.

I do not agree to Dolly, Small hotels and resorts might not even have the fund to implement green techniques. And use of solar energy is also not possible everywhere due to environment concerns..

It will be great if you can suggest some ways of implementing green techniques with low cost..

I do not agree with Sushil. These techniques might make the hotels like HYATT more efficient but it is not possible for medium size Hotels to implement green techniques and make profits at the same time. Implementation of green techniques has a very high investment cost.
