I am talking about reality shows. From "Kaun banega crorepati" to "Big boss", from "Dance India Dance" to "Biggest loser" all the shows are based on some shows aired in US way back before the concept started building in India.

These shows do have good TRPs though and there is no objection against them whatsoever. But Isn't it a time for some change. Don't we need a hint of innovation? These shows as are based on US shows they have some elements which are yet not acceptable in India. This leads to various public issues.

If the programes were invented in our own naton they would have been designed in more acceptabl forms. So so we need innovation than imitation in India?

Art ceases to be enjoyable when creativity dies. What we need is more shows thought, created and produced from an Indian perspective than borrowing ideas from the Western world whose culture and tastes are entirely different from ours. Reality shows based on fresh ideas can get away from the grit of popular criticism, so let there be more innovations and not imitations in our television shows.

Well said ! Our electronic media is in an urgent need of overhaul both in terms of programming content and credibility factor. And it is not restricted to just reality shows, even our news needs an overhaul. Mindless events are highlighted beyond imagination and run continuously for a couple of days. I would put it down to the lack of will power and spending ability. In india industrialist having money to spare starts a television channel without understanding the implications nor the industry itself. Abroad television channels are set up after careful consideration. Here channels do not invest in buying good programming content and look towards buying it cheap or imitating. I can list a handful of channels that really invest in good programming content but for the rest it is either films, song or news driven content that makes up their very essence.

We should avoid copying other but generate something that other admires

I'd rather take it, Disha, if you allow me, in a broader sense. TV must become interactive; must merge with the Internet.

Then, what it would be the innovation in TV industry could be quite surprising.

Innovation, yes, if only by way of 'rediscovery'.  I'm told these days many young people are looking up old Doordarshan shows like Mahabharata on the web (Youtube etc.), and the hits on those sites are rising.  It may indicate a craving for more ordered, structured storytelling, whether fiction or non-fiction.  I remember hugely enjoying the satirical poetry shows on DD of yore (usually aired just before Holi), and the similar patriotic poetry shows on DD before Independence Day & Republic Day. It may not be 'cool' anymore to hark back to those days, but I think it never harmed anyone to at least think about what they were consuming by way of TV, rather that let it become the true idiot box as it seems to be becoming more & more these days.

I accept your views Ms.Disha Roy.The TV industries lack something on the essence of the program and mostly duplication from others and interpreting in different ways. There is a paucity in creativity.

I agree with you completely.Almost all shows are based on themes which are already aired in US.Indian idol can be taken as example as it was ditto copy of American idol.

I agree with you Disha a lot of creativity and innovations are required in Television Programmes but till such time the shows, which are old in US is given a new name and working fine why some body will bother. At the same time who they think of creations and innovations will take the cake in future.

It require too much innovation in television industry, because viewers feel inconvenience, boring due to ad, meaning less serial, reality show etc. At the initially program may be getting good response but then after some time response is becoming slow as we analyse TRP of program. Innovation like SAB TV really great innovation - reposition, 1 break in Star gold and sony max. Especially programwise innovation is require still like before 4 year ago reality show , Indian idol, Saregamapa, little champ, india's got talent etc. Short period of programe innovation will give good effect, it will attract viewers. So innovation is require not only in tv industry but also in every field....

Hey,

What is an imitation, may be an innovation for many. The ratio of people decides this. Disseminating what is learned yesterday  to today's people is business. Be it a cultural / social / technological event , it is all assimilated by all  sections across the World, so that one community knows whats happening in others. By screening so many program and remains welcome to people,  means that they are Innovation to them. What I drive at,  is that majority feels, it is an innovation and gains  popularity. Not merely that,  it does good business by the viewers.

I support simply ,"NO", because I spent only 2 hours per week to see T.V.

& that is only for Sunday talk show & news so it doesn't matters with current

format for me.
