The issue is much better understood by simply asking oneself are women restricted from having their fair share in the corporate world ? ...and the answer is an obvious 'NO'. The lower numbers are due to various factors ranging from personal to societal. Certain roles/professions are gender biased. Men fighting for an equal share in a counselors role or women fighting for equal share in the rig-cleaners role is stretching the idea too far in my opinion.

They certainly have their share...its fair or not is the question. The answer of which can be best given by women only. But that is for sure that many of the corporates would not perform if their men are not supported by their respective women.

Yes I believe women have found their share in the Corporate World at least in the Western Hemisphere. From my experience women have been given their fair share in society. We are living in a modern society, gone are the days when women were not given top ranking positions even in the civil service and had no confidence in even starting their own businesses or lack confidence in managing a big organisation. Women are now Presidents, Prime Ministers, Ministers of the Govt., Ambassadors for their countries, hold high positions in large companies and are successful business women. Family life will not prevent a women from succeeding in the corporate world/modern society.

Sujit, I think you should check all your comments for grammatical errors and incorrect spellings before correcting other people. I have seen you made many to date. However, I guess you may go back and edit all to prove me wrong.

Women have certainly found their share in the corporate world to quite and extent. Everything comes with a cost. Women and Men both pay through their noses to get a share into the corporate world. Where women have to compromise to step into their world, men also have to struggle. Today it is easier for women to step into the corporate world as women can afford to pay for the support they require for looking after their babies and also cooking and other chores while they are at work. Women can have children, good family life and also a good corporate life these days, but yes not to forget women certainly have to make some extra compromises or rather adjustments to cope up with all these things. In other words nothing is impossible in today's world.

i think women have been given their share, but I agree with Deepa that men pose challenges to us in terms of dealing with politics and working, peer pressure etc. we are always challenged in some way or the other and when we win the challenges posed to us, nobody accepts it. When we get over some obstacle men stick something else out and say' now face this'. It is very backward and highly political. I do not agree to these tactics and would prefer to step out than get down and dirty.

That is your way of thinking Mr. Mallikarjuna Gupta. Men like you are still living in the olden times and not seeing that there are women who are being given their share in the corporate world. if unsure start researching on Google and you will come to know how many women are being successful.

Why do you say so Mr. Shivendra? If women can tolerate to a certain extent with a man as her boss then why cant men like you tolerate and feel comfortable with a woman boss. I totally oppose to this kind of view. We women do all out household chores and also do a great job in the office and thats how one fine day we become the boss. Instead of appreciating and being happy working under a woman boss for what she is you men still feel uncomfortable working with a woman boss. This is totally ridiculous.

It is true that most of the men cannot tolerate women going up the ladders as far as profession is considered. We women have to take it as a challenge and show that we are far better than them in a lot of ways like looking after the house, kids, etc... as well as growing up professionally.

Hi Deepali I believe 3-4% is too conservative an estimate, when we are talking about Female education being raised by 58% in last 2 decades. Moreover any Org (Apart from Metallurgy/Heavy Labor/Manufacturing) we can easily spot that female contingent is not lacking witha mere 3-4% its an appreaciable number, there are certain sectors (Editorial/Event Mgt/Teaching/Hospitality/Air Hostess/Media/PR/Tele Calling.............) where women presence is in almost comparable or infact higher proportion than male population. I must mark that Times have changed, male population has given support, belief and required encouragement to give women their share of space in all the professional worlds. When I say so I mean the complete female contingent in working space, not the top notch.

Yes begining has been done. But they have to face the gasic challenges of life which puts them in disadvatagieous positionn over men. Men unfortunately treat them as teir competitors and always wish that they work as their subordinates not boss. but then this has started breaking and women have started taking the position of bosses and they are performing efficiently.Indira Noui is there to support this.

Hi I agree with deepali. Today women are in every field where men are. But women have to look after their family with carieer.Women have to sacrifice their desires for their carieer. Women have to choose between carieer and family. though we see today women have many advantages than previous, then also men get more importance than women in the society. Today though women contribute their knowledge, honest efforts in every field, it might be ignored because of man's ego.

Ok, agreed that women have hit the proverbial 'glass ceiling' and not received their due share. But the question we should be asking is, is it becaue of personal and family pressures, as most members have suggested, or are there impediments that the corporate itself creates for women?

Kindly change the word there to their. Sentence should be "Have women found their share in the corporate world" And as nowhere we have 50% share in either job or education despite being part of 50% population, Hence they have not yet found their due share in corporate world, parliament, schools or any Public stage of world.

Women have not gone anywhere-the glass ceiling is definitely looming large. Some women have gone beyond but that is so few that the revolution is not happening there. But it is happening at the grassroot levels- in villages.More and more women are taking up the bold stance of telling the men to keep off and sending their girls to study. And to the many women finding fault with the men-I am sorry-but the worst enemy to a woman is another woman.

I agree with most of the posts in this forum. But I personally believe that there is a lot of potential in women that needs to be harnessed. Abhishek is right when he says there are only a handful of women and when we take an overall scenario we wont find many in the top management. But there is a reason behind it. We would have to understand the evolution of the careers of women as we try to unravel this. When we hire freshers (both men and women) from college, they are at the same level. In fact, my experience tells me that some of the best performing employees have been women. Their families are happy and support them totally. Once the initial euphoria goes off, the family starts pestering most of the women for marriage. I have known hundreds of top-performing women leaving their jobs to go marry someone who is in a different city or a different country. What happens to her career ? Its killed just when she is about to embark on the middle-tier of the corporate. She either quits working altogether or takes up something which is below par to her ability. Considering that she survives till that stage to marry someone who supports her job/shift, after a year or two they would be facing the big question of starting a family. Once this happens, her priorities are totally changed as is wont with nature. First priority would be the baby. Best case scenario, she might lose 6-7 months of the peak-performing period of her career. Worst case scenario (am talking about complicated pregnancies), she might end up losing more than a year and half. When she rejoins back, would she be in the state of mind that she quit ? Absolutely NO. Because she has been out of touch not just with her work, but with the culture too. Suddenly people also start her differently. Major responsibilities are many times not given to new-moms because people think they would need an easy job which is stress free. Consider a second baby and then imagine where her career would be ? In the meantime, where is her peer (male) who joined work with her as a fresher by now ? he is at least 2-3 notches above her in the hierarchy. Apart from all these also, there are many other socio-economic situations which play a part in defining the career of women. To say that inspite of all this, some women make it to the top of the organization hierarchy is an achievement, is an understatement. I personally salute their spirit and their multi-tasking abilities. The only way we can ensure that women get their due share in the corporate world, is by having a definite percentage as target (of course based on merit) for hiring women to maintain a healthy female:male ratio on the floor. I have been fortunate to work with such companies and I feel more such initiatives would ensure equal gender parity at work.

Well Vinay, its easy to take one or two names but if you take the overall scenario you won't find more than 10% women in the senior management and thus I would to take exception from your point of view and would like to say that still there is still discrimination with women when it comes to corporate world.
