One of the common dilemmas faced by implementors of information communication technology initiatives is how to go about identifying right technology for their service. How quickly do they implement new technology into their environment? Do they wait for a few top companies to integrate it first before jumping on board, or do they help lead the way and tout their company as one that stays on the cutting edge of technology?

I feel the answer lies with the leadership of the company and the risks they're willing to take. Let us debate over the pros and cons of early adoption of IT over others who follow and see how well new products work.

Pour in your thoughts on what works and why...

Adopting IT at an early stage helps in giving better service and as a result of it the expectation of the customers also go up. When this happens,  we always need to innovate with new things to keep up their expectations. Once we have SCM/CRM in place we can easily get the pulse of the customer and and do our business based on that. Ultimately the customer is the driving force any business.

I will say early adopters should accept the risks first rather than rewards because sometimes it’s not the new technology that is the problem it is the other supporting technologies like in the case of VOIP where many companies were early adopters and there was initial success but that did not went smoothly afterwards due to reliability factor. It was quality of service that needed to evolve before it could become truly reliable  in case of VOIPs.

The real question is whether the technology gives you competitive advantage and generates real customer value. Technology is simply a means to an end. The risks involved with using cutting edge technology must be mitigated as a part of the normal business process and incorporated into a business case. If the potential revenue exceeds the cost of the technology, risk mitigation and operations then go for it. If it does not then well you have your answer.

I feel early adopter in IT allows you to benefit faster from new products, but exposes you to higher risk. But being first is especially important if you work in a highly competitive service oriented industry and announcing to the world that due to new products you can perform a service faster, better and safer than the competition is a huge competitive advantage.  What's more, taking risks can make IT staff stronger. A reputation for using cutting-edge technology will help attract and retain employees eager to innovate and learn new skills.
