This program is working since 5 years and still many of us don't even know about it. I will do it for sure but world wide effectiveness is something totally different. Atleast we have this paltform, share it and spread it so more and more people can follow it. It is not an advertise, it is for our mother earth. Lets say YES WE CAN.

I have taken NO as my side because as long as I don't see many supportive arguments I don't think it will be possible. Come and make me change my side:)

Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia when 2.2 million individuals and over 2,000 businesses turned their off lights for one hour to take a stand against climate change. India joined the campaign in 2009. Presently, mainly the urban centres in the country are participating. "This year, around 50 cities, 11,957 educational institutions, corporates and many small NGOs have pledged to observe the Earth Hour. Environment Ministry secretary Dharmendra said: "The government has appealed to over 2,000 schools, 2,000 Resident Welfare Associations, about 100 colleges, malls and hotels in the capital to switch off non-essential lights during the Earth Hour." "Delhi saved 300 MW of electricity during the 2010 Earth Hour," he added. wasn't it effective?

Voluntary action, due to awareness level, would make sense, but how far this could be effective! Rather, the Government should try and reduce the "Transmission and Distribution loss" which is estimated at 30%, we would achieve a lot!

Mr. N.Arikrishnan,

World Wild Life organized a voluntary Forum," Earth Hour" to make people aware of Climate Change due to over consumption of Energy & subsequent emission of Carbon into atmosphere. This movement started in Mar2007 in Sydney. Since then, growing number of nations / Voluntary organizations are joining hands with it , to reduce consumption of energy in all possible ways. This year March26, is declared AS observation day.

People are encouraged to reduce consumption of electricity by switching off unwanted lights , at least for an hour. You remember in India Rastrapathi Bhavan follows it, religiously, every year. This is an effort to make people understand the effect of Energy Consumption on Global warming & Climate change.

It was the second time i  participated in this. I think a better media support is necessary for this initiative. Our local newspaper had a page itself dedicated to this requesting people's experiences in Global Earth Hour.

I feel, if government takes this initiative, then it will reach the people fast.

Whether we conserve Energy by observing "Earth Hour or Not" . It certainly, creates an Awareness Globally & shows the World that they are committed unitedly to achieve the goal (reduce Global warming).

These two strong messages are passed down the line i.e to the generations.

Thanks Swapna for the invite. Of course there will be a change - if the cause is noble & humanity-centric; the action is widely understood and implemented. Feb 14th was the day we were to stop purchasing petrol - this was to protest the surcharges which had driven the price to such an inflated figure when other neighbouring countries (including Pakistan) were distributing it for half the price. Earth hour was very succesful last year. Hope it is the same this year. Please pass it on - the more the better.

No, it is just symbolic guesture. Unless serious attempts are made to reduce energy consumption, there will not be any significant impact

First to create public awareness, there must be a massive campaign. The awareness campaign must explain why this is being done. It must explain that this is done for the benefit of all living beings. Once this is done if anyone does not follow this earth hour, others would look at them shamefully.

Also, the TV companies can give boost by not telecasting anything for that one hour. The earth hour must not interfere with any major sporting event or any other event. It must not be announced on any auspicious day.

If these are followed it would work.

Earth hour is a good initiative. But it stops there. What after that? My hour? We switch off our lights and waste like there will never be tomorrow thereafter? All the hardwork we do on that day for our planet, we undo all every other day.

Lets atleast do this everyday, if not switching off lights the entire day, let us switch off when we do not need them, control the incessant flow water and use of plastic bags. Do this bit everyday and we will not need Earth Hour anymore.Jaago graahak jaago!
