our education system has no room for interest word, and in most of the cases people find it to be too late(of course its never late to start pursuing your dreams, this is for all pessimists out here) to start pursuing there interest when they find out(if some how) what they would had loved to be. One of the most important word in our life is job(read it lucrative job) and most of us see or find out our interest in the fields which have more employment opportunities. coming on to "brainy" word, society still treats people like "Tathagat Avatar Tulsi"(hope i have spelled it correct, because i am quite weak in retaining things) and not any performing artist(there are many who had created thousands of melodies/acts) as brainy. this was just an comparison which speaks a lot.

While there are a lot of options now available in 'public' schools, people who opt for science/math are still considered the "brainy" ones. A lot of it also comes from parental pressure on kids who are made to believe that they careers would be much better served if they opt for science/commerce with math whether or not they have an inclination towards it. Kids opting for Arts for instance are mostly considered students who don't 'have it' in them to go for the sciences. While a lot of co-curricular activities are available to students to choose from such options are hardly ever given a real chance or even considered as something which the student might have interest in and therefor pursue as a career / life work.

As we are talking about perception, it varies depending on the demographics. No denying the fact that earlier kids who enrolled in science/math courses were considered 'brainy' but the attitude is definitely shifting. Yes, choice of a course for kids depends to a large extent on the parental pressures; parents who look at course selection from a future employment perspective and that employment range has increased to include liberal arts, finance, economics, sports, hospitality, etc. now in comparison to just medicine and engineering in the past. So, with abundant employment opportunities exiting, the focus is shifting on interests and passions.

A student rarely knows waht he "REALLY" wants to do. He is mostly influenced by trends. Students choosing science and maths are no different from the commerce people or Art lovers. Different part of brain works for different people. There is students who choose science in school but see their inclination towards arts and end up being Masters in Fine arts. Plus why to care that who is 'considered' brainy.. in the end its just about you and your choices..
