It can be argued that the expectations from 'developed' countries for emerging economies to curb their carbon emissions by foregoing access to certain 'luxury' items like cars and even infrastructural provisions like electricity for the poor are irrational considering that these 'developed' countries have polluted their way to development. Moreover, it is quite difficult to beat the Kuznets' Environmental Curve given the constraints on resources, infrastructure, and population.

On the other hand, why not consider thinking out-of-the-box solutions to meet development requirements of the emerging economies, in ways that are both sustainable and prosperous. For example, Governments of emerging economies can invest in research for finding alternative mobility solutions, can facilitate sustainable electrification of villages through renewable energy etc. Of course this would require more investment of time and resources in research and efficient implementation. But then, aren't smartness and ability the reasons propelling the current growth of emerging economies, so, why follow bad examples of the west?

Very well said Karthik !

Portugal is another example along with Cuba, Spain and even Israel ... If they can work sustainably or sensibly or wisely, why not we ... ?

And what stops us from doing that ! We cannot blame anybody either political will or vision or whatever it may be ... although problems / challenges are visibly there, and we have to accept them and act responsibly (with the ability to respond properly) and what is required is that ... We the conscious / concerned lot network, support each other and build up the concerned citizen mass movement at Non - Government Organization (NGO) level and influence Government, Bureaucracy,  Corporates and whoever, it may be - the stake holders !

If we look at world history, all good works have been done at volunteer level by people who are concerned in either India or abroad and by few of them only initially ... So what do u say, Can we join together for building the mass movement .... ?

We have to lead by examples ... Do we have real out ogf box solutions ? There are very many sites with Sustainable Solutions, let us explore them !

when we look at Spain and even Cuba they have developed so aggressively sustainable solutions, India really lacks the Political will and vision. To date we have no clear Bio fuel policy and no inclination to enable Ethanol blending succeed.

What is sustainable development, It stands for meeting the needs of present generations without jeopardizing the ability of futures generations to meet their own needs to put in simple words, a better quality of life for everyone, now and for generations to come.

Yes Karthik i agree with you that It is wise to develop sustainability as it offers a vision of progress that integrates immediate and the longer-term objectives with respect to local and global perspective, and regards with social, economic and environmental issues as inseparable and interdependent components of human progress.

And the sustainable development will not be just brought about by policies as they are doing it now as some of them are failing to implement it,  it must be taken up by people and society at large as a principle and it should be the guiding and it should be the choices each citizen makes every day, as well as the big political and economic decisions.  And for this to happen this requires profound changes in thinking, in economic and social structures and mainly in consumption and production patterns.
