What do you think is the major factor for an employee for promoting into higher position?

Experience or Expertise?

I have clicked on yes just because it is a positive expression. But the debate is not properly put up. It is not clear that 'Yes' & 'No' stand for what. It seems there is some lack of experience in using Too Step here.

The promotion/selection is based upon competency which is a factor of Education, Training, Skill & Experience (not in the order of preference). It is a must that out of available lot a person with best combination of above four, keeping the job profile in mind, shall be selected.

Hi friends......

Surya amazing debate, according to me we should consider a persons expertise level to promote him. Nowadays experts are given more importance because they do the work effectively and efficiently. Ofcourse experience in a specific field makes a person expert. So you should be an expertise in your field to be recognized.......

Thanks......

Dear Surya

You could have written Experince & Skill in place of Yes or No. Else made it clear in the body of the text itself. You know it because you have written it.

Coming to debate. The point which I want to make is that one should not chose one criteria over the other in general. If one has to then the choice should be based upon the work/job profile. Suggesting general rule will not be appropriate.

My support is for Experience, as an experienced person will also have the skills and expertise which will be learnt from his experience. This woule make him perfect for promoting to higher level in an organization.

However, it depends on an individual how they cope up well, whether in less time or taking more time. Some individuals will cope up soon and some will take time. The individuals coping soon will be very much eligible for promotions even if they dont have enough experience. There wil be individuals who will cope up only with the experience. Both Experience and Expertise are very much required for an indivudual to go into higher positions.

Hi Vivek..I agree that it should be the blend of Experience, Skillls, Exoertise while promoting an employee. However, I am afraid that you have not understood the corret point in this debate. This is only to choose which will be preferred more in case of an employee promotion. Whether it is Experience first or Expertise first and between these two, it is clearly divided as, if Yes then you are supporting for Experience and No, you are are supporting for Expertise. I hope you got the point. If you think it is lack of inexperience in using toostep...that is wrong....it is lack of understanding about the debate!!

If different people have different mind speed, thinking process, attitude, learning tendency then in that  conditions how experience can be mapped ... experts fulfill all these criteria....

Friends,

This debate would go on and on a never ending topic... For promotion definetily it would be candidate's expert knowledge. If I am hiring somebody internally I would look for both total experience and expert knowledge on subject. But I would laid more emphasis on expert knowledge because in the end this guy has to manage business.

Experience and expert knowledge on subject bith has their own importance sometimes we need experience more than expert knowledge to run operations e.g. Client leading role where your experience counts more with good knowlegde on subject.
