Facebook overtook Google to become the most popular site in the US for the first time last week, although the search engine giant remains dominant in Britain. The social networking phenomenon, set up by Mark Zuckerberg from his dorm in Harvard in 2005, secured 7.07 per cent of website hits from the US during the week ending 13 March.

http://images.ientrymail.com/webpronews/article_pics/facebook_opening_you_to_google.jpg

Facebook's weekly hits were up 185 per cent year on year against Google's rise of 9 per cent. The data did not include hits on the search engine's video-sharing website YouTube, Google Maps or its email service Gmail.

So, will search engines be a history in front of social networking in future??

People lately we are seeing search engines tie up with social networking sites to show the results that are real time what ever may be the query is, people are more interested in seeing what actually is happening now and a genuine review by a fellow user than the stagnant details that we get in the search engine. Though search engines are the best resource to get many things, but the trend is changing and even search engines have realised that and are accomodating social networking results in their search which is more towards real time, we never know what Facebook or twitter can come up with in future in terms of search as they currently boast the highest number of users and with the data that users are generating so much for these sites, they can easily displace search engines in future.

I don't agree that facebook will be able to defeat google permanently. Facebook has dethroned Google! Sort of! Well, ok, not really. For the week ending March 13, the social networking site got more traffic than its competitor. But be careful how you slice your numbers.

While many pundits may use this data to validate predictions that Facebook will eventually beat Google (GOOG) at its own game, the social networking startup has yet to pull ahead in any real sense.

For the first full week, more people typed "Facebook.com" into their browser than "Google.com." But these figures account for only a portion of Google’s web properties.

They don’t measure Gmail or YouTube at all. Looked at in isolation, YouTube alone was the fifth most visited website during  the week ending March 6, according to Hitwise.

Absolutely right Neelam.........The way Social Media is growing, it will make a huge impact on our lives......Some of its features like Product review by user will have a great value because it is genuine. So today, on social media, we all are creating data for the future and we never know where and when these kind of data will be useful to someone. So in future it is possible that people will search on facebook/linkedin/twitter etc to access genuine information rather than any search engine like google or bing.

Social-networking star Facebook surpassed Google to become the most visited website in the United States for the first time last week, industry analysts showed.

Facebook's homepage finished the week ending March 13 as the most visited site in the country, according to industry tracker Hitwise.

The "important milestone," as described by Hitwise director of research Heather Dougherty, came as Facebook enjoyed a massive 185 percent increase in visits in the same period, compared to the same week in 2009.

Facebook can beat Google in some ways but Google still remains the Best Search engine.

Both of them are different Products & hence cannot be compared on such grounds.

Facebook's growth around the world has been astonishing and it is now the dominant social network in a number of key markets. Google took 9.4 per cent of the share of hits , while Facebook was the second most-visited site, accounting for 6 per cent.

Facebook has experienced extraordinary growth, and revealed it had more than 400 million users in February. It overtook MySpace for the first time in June 2008. There are still question over the group's business model as it struggles to turn its huge user base into profits.

So, I think social networking will overtake search engines.

To be very frank, it does not matter to the subscribers on TooStep ... who first or who goes second. One day we may learn that Google has purchased Face-book or vise-versa.

Leaving the subject of compareing, WE MAY CONCENTRATE ON utility aspect of different sites, their usefulness and recent upgradation etc if any.

I would certainly agree that facebook was able to beat google but that won't be for a longer period of time. The kind of applications, games facebook has are very addictive as they are interesting and good source to keep in touch with friends and entertainment source but definitely google has been in the market from a longer time and is also trying new things and soon would be able to move ahead of facebook in social networking.

The only fact here is that Facebook receives more hits, that is all.

Facebook is a total different web application then Google. If anyone wants to search on the web, are they going to Facebook? No, of course not, they are going to Google or another search engine.

Well, It's too early to say I guess, Yes, for now facebook would be leading the race; but it won't be longer when the search engine gaint will leave face book miles behind due to their innovative idea and the market share they have currently.

Well you can’t conclude this. It will be too early to say this statement.

Both are all together different work areas. Yes as neelam said social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter may come up with new features, but at the same time search engines will also come with enhanced features.

Search engines and social networking websites are poles apart in terms of services. Search engines are meant for providing us with information and social networking websites are mainly a platform where we can interact with the world. Yes, I do agree that discussions and articles posted on these websites are very resourceful, but they cannot replace search engines like Google.

NO,why?

For example, as a software devloper if i have to developed a module and i want to refer some similar code for my module then i will search using google not i log into facebook or orkut.Search engine is used for references purpose and social networking sites as the name suggest are used from social interlinking.we can't compare these two like we can't compare o.s. and programming languages.

Its OK as far as we are comparing the two sites on the number of hits basis, but it is unrealistic to compare these two sites, no need to compare a social networking site with a search engine, as the purpose of the two are entirely different.

While Google is a search engine, Facebook is a social networking site and they individually fulfill diverse needs differently. Apart from numbers (hits) , there is nothing we could compare between the two. Having dissimilarities in their usage, there would not be a day when one could replace the other. Yes, if it is just the hits you’d meant Neelima, sure social networking site could take over the search engines and soon at that. Aforsaid apart, I think the question could have been framed differently to make for a debate.

No, search engine is different and social networking is different. How searching can become history in-front of social networks? The discussion itself is wrong. May be to meet the requirements of the social network, google has started "buzz".
