Facebook the social networking site which just started 6 years ago in Harvard university for internal communications among the students is now boasting 500 million users, and just 18 months ago it had 150 million users and so soon they have reached 500 million users, and now the next quest for them is to reach the 1 billion mark.  And with 500 million users they reach nearly 8% of the world population, with the billion mark in their mind, they will reach nearly 20% of the worlds population.

But, there might be a case of too much is a bad thing for most of the things, and that holds true for social networking sites also, earlier it was orkut, which has faded like anything with facebook dominance, next it could be facebook to face stiff competition from Twitter and many others who are on the verge to create something better than facebook, with competition rising from all the quarters, can facebook keep up the dominance the way it has..So, what do you think people, can facebook reach 1 billion users mark?? share your views on this...

I think they easily can reach the 1 billion mark, people are always on facebook, dont know much about twitter but, facebook has just killed orkut like anything. And the growth rate is like anything for facebook, in such a short time they have achieved this mark, and 1 billion mark will happen in a year and a half or 2 yrs or so I guess, but surely they will reach the billion mark which will be an amazing feat by any social networking site.

Their investment in understanding human psychology as in why we get addicted to an activity and their focus on clear layout has really differentiated them from Orkut and the long forgotten friendster/Hi5 which were once a popular social networking site.

yes I am very much sure that they will reach as soon as 2 years or before because the fact is people of age group bet 14-25 are internet savvy mostly on facebook. Nowdays marketer are looking to include facebook in their strategy that only increases the publicity and follwer therby more subcribers will lead huge succes for this site.

The way it is increasing the number of users, it will not be a surprise if it touches 1.0 billion users within a short period of time.

Technology is evolving so fast. Facebook need to stay for many years, additionally penetration of social sites in less developed areas will be required.
