Facebook has made its first steps into the search market. The social network has launched a trial of a feature called Questions, which allows people to pose queries to the site's 500 million users.

The service has been rolled out to a select group of Facebook members and will "evolve over time", the site said. It will go head-to-head with other services such as Yahoo Answers, Twitter and search engines such as ask.com.

The core of search is a question, For thousands of years we asked questions of people that we trusted. Then around 15 years ago we underwent an incredible revolution with the arrival of search engines.  And now it was Questions return to this age of more personalised search.

Many are interpreting this as a direct challenge to the dominance of Google's automated search.

So, what do you think people, Will Facebook be able to take on the traditional search engines??

Why not..? If facebook is the best social media, google is the best apps company. And any point of time they can shake hands to win over Microsoft..!

So competition matters. Facebook alone can't complete in market. So all who are microsoft competitors are business partners directly or indirectly..

And Facebook can take a start, as it has got high potential and audience!

I don't think so, as Google gives you something which is relevant and I don't think people have enough time to ask questions and wait for others to answer for their queries, still we don't know how the functionality will be working in the first place, but with 500 million users and with some good connections people can take help of their connections to solve their queries, but don't know how it will help or how relevant those answers will be which they will be getting..But Google has an amazing search engine or other search engines they focus on their core strength which is only search and nothing else, but whereas Facebook is having its plate full at the moment, social networking, gaming, ads, chat options and many things...and this might backfire them...So, I don't see facebook taking on traditional search engines...

I agree with her. Its true that google is there but google has also came with quite smilar ideas and now since users are many so they put their effort as well to feed knowledge about the topic. Rest all will depend on the efforts made by facebook.

I think they have every possible chance to take on the traditional search engines here with this functionality of theirs, and Facebook being facebook will soon reach 1 billion users in a year and that will be a huge platform for search and the questions being visible to 1 billion people and this is a big advantage that Facebook has, people are a lot active on facebook than anywhere else...and they will make sure that these questions option will work for them, I mean they are the company of this century for me....Its great to see everyday some or the other new updates releasing in facebook, you can see certain changes time and again on the site which is a good thing, and shows that they are responding to users in the right direction.

I think you have got it slightly wrong Sumitra, when you say that Facebook "Questions" is trying to compete with search engines. It's not exactly a search engine.

FB "Questions" an application which gives you an opportunity to ask a question, which other users (500 million) on FB can answer. It's something like "Q&A" on TooStep or "Answers" on LinkedIn, but TooStep and LinkedIn are more professional, FB Questions will be more social.

Sitting in India, if I post a question - What is the cheapest mode of transport to get from London Heathrow Airport to Hilton Hotel? This way I get the opportunity to hear from people with first hand experience traveling from the airport to Hilton in London; and learn from their experience. Wouldn't this be amazing. I feel it is a great concept, keeping in mind the size of the user base of FB.

Facebook will take a very very long time to get the huge network like google. The databases google is having is enormous and facebook will not be able to compete it easily.

So g+ is trying hard to survice now we have brand pages on g+ too. To add to this they have added game apps to lure people. but are there enough people to make this work? Will game apps do any good to g+?
