A VERY GOOD QUESTION INDEED... FOR BOLLYWOOD FILMS THIS IS INFACT A GOOD TOPIC...IF SENSORSHIP IS TO ACT THEN WHERE DOES THEIR SCISSORS VANISH WHEN THEY SEE A SIZZLING HOT ITEM NUMBER WHERE A HEROINE EXPOSES HALF OF HER BODY JUST TO WATCH THAT 3RD GRADED ITEM NUMBER SOME PEOPLE FLOCK THE MOVIE THEATRE...REALLY RIDICULOUS... TALKING OF SENSORSHIP ALSO REMINDS OF SOME FILM LIKE AASTHA OF REKHAJI, UTSAB OF REKHAJI, WHERE CENSOR BOARD JUST WAS TOO LIBERAL...THE KIND OF SONGS, THE KIND OF SLEEZY DRESSES THAT THE ACTRESSES ARE MADE TO WEAR NOWADAYS ARE FIRST TO BE CENSORED BUT IF THESE ARE ALLOWED THEN WHAT ON EARTH FILMS ARE BEING PROTECTED BY CENSOR BOARDS. RATING U/A .....DOSENT HAVE ANY MEANING NOWADAYS....IN HOLLYWOOD FILMS WE GENERALLY SEE THT THEY GIVE US" UNDER PARENTAL GUIDANCE" AND REALLY THE CENSOR BOARD ALSO WORK ACCORDINGLY BUT SINCE BOLLYWOOD CENSOR BOARD DOSENT EVEN UNDERSTAND THE RELEVANCE OF U/A THERE SHOULD NOT BE ANY CENSOR BOARD ACTUALLY/ IN BOLLYWOOD EVEN IN "U" RATED MOVIES WE CAN SEE SOME SCENES WHICH ARE EMBARRASSING AND NOT ALLOWABLE FOR KIDS...SO WHERE LIES THE SIGNIFICANCE OF SENSORSHIP??

yes anurag kashyap saves my vote in favor of his argument that films should be free from censorship because now we should act mature and sensible, nothing is hidden even from the kids in todays highly developed world, where at one side we talk to reach moon other hand we are so reserved and conservative on the issues of openness and frankness and display of violence and physical relationship onscreen that we talk to censor it, when we know that it is the time of revolution when we should get rid of all the dead and suppressing notions that prevented us from being no. 1 in the world.

Whoa Dudes and Babes, the inevitable question which bridge to cross and which to burn! Himanshu thanks for the referral. Censorship V/S old school and new school of thoughts, is very old discourse as old as the 18th Century aesthetic society question. When a well known satirist Oscar Wilde was imprisoned because his views parlayed against the then society. And he proclaimed later that “all art is useless.” It is a tussle always between the maker and the supervisory board because of a myth : when one is wholly and solely involved in making a creative piece either film, novel or any art for that matter, his power of judgement underplays the power of creativity and in the process he can create a Masterpiece or a Frankenstein. Hence forth watchdogs are supposed to strike a balance in the creative process. The other reason is that Film-makers like Anurag Kashyap are intelligent modern film-makers who also estimate the common man’s common sense to be at par with theirs, and the irony is the censor board acts as a misnomer interpreting the common sense for the common man’s sake. The plight of current filmmakers is not only censor board but also the finance pockets, coz mostly all the Producers still believe in the formula based drama instead of concept based films.

I really agree to what Dayanand and others are saying here, and censor board really have no clue like on what they are putting a tab on, today people can get those cheap things like porn and other things on road side and one can also easily get these things on Internet, so why are we chopping the scenes to mainstream cinema, if anybody wants to watch it is their wish, why are we hampering the quality of the movie just because it had couple of obligatory scenes and violence, and this is the main reason why people don't go to movie theatres these days, and easily download the movie and watch the uncut version, this is why there is more piracy, because in movie halls you won't get to see the complete thing, with so many chopped up scenes the movie is not worth watching anymore, so i agree that there should be no censorship or anything like that, or else the censor board should be more liberal, or get themselves trained couple of months in other countries where creativity, content is given importance than social implications or the aftermath.

preserving one's culture is one thing that can be considered as crucial but aren't we are being ignorant to the fact that it would be sort of hasty generalisation wen we say they ( the common people)would be indulging in same kind of lifestyle as that shown in movies ,it is same as there perception of indian dancing n singing around trees .keep adult content apart ,the hollywood movies n tv shows are far better in terms of content .our tv industry in fact is rated "crap tv".if that is kind of values one want to be imparted to there childrens then there let there be dark beneath the lamp...

For what our films need a censorship?.........I have my intellect to decide and eyes to see or not to see and pockets to buy or not buy any stuff which is not suitable for me.............. Censorship requires to prevent what?..........Indecency, material not of good taste.......immoral items....( LOL) See your society with your naked eyes......listen your news Channels, read your news papers......visit your schools /colleges.........every where....every body is munching its time in things ........which are so called required to be Censored. Adulteration, Rapes, politics, murders , criminalism...etc etc etc.... they are not the subjects which we read in books.......but we see and feel their impact in our society........ Censorship since its inception hasn't been able to make any change in the mind of people rather......thinking/mentality of people around has depreciated every moment. No ..I think.....people needs to be self managed (controlled) if they dont like to see, watch or be a part of anything. Otherwise, stopping anything will just suppress the people in doing........and result will come out as a bigger decrement in living values.........

I agree with Mr. Dayanand. Senior citizens are holding the seats of censor office who don't have any idea of what is international film industry. In the name of "Culture", they will never allow us to compete in international standards. This is the reason, hardly any of our movies get Oscar awards. These people still want that 60s touch in bollywood and make our film industry outdated. Cinema industry should be made free from them. Its their time to get retired...

No, never. With censorship only, we have such level of vulgarity around, its absence will definitely aggravate the situation beyond limits, in the name of so-called entertainment. Truly in sync with Ms Resmiji..

Certainly not. Today , the main argument for censorship is not just sex or violence. We can have movies , books or even mere statements , which are driven by evil ideas , such as ethnic cleansing , paedophilia , ... Any one can put out material that glorifies such evil ideas. Would you like that people , who are often not well educated or well informed , have access to such material ? Why do we say that liquor / alcohol / drugs should not be peddled anywhere near educational institutions ? Is it that students do not know of these ? The idea is that if you make access to these difficult , it will easier for students to remain on the moral path and not stray. The same logic applies to censorship. If you make it more difficult for people to put out offensive material , viewers will be less inclined to go looking for such material.

Anything presented to a mass market and which involves employee, payments, etc is subject to safeguards, standards, etc. So we should we make an exception for films. Also film industry has been given an industry status so they have to be responsible and accept censorship since their products will be subject to checks and balances before it can go to market. Also films have an influence on others, and are an instrument of expression and human expression on any topic is subject to laws.

definitely there are certain rules and norms are there, it's not because of certain values or culture it is because our new generation and kids should leram the things in a descent and right manner not in wrong way.

We are seeing cultural erosion in the name of film freedom! After the penetration of Television in bed rooms, our children and teenagers grabbed the remote control from the parents to watch anything and everything that is on display! At least, in yester years parents used exercise judgement to take their wards to cinema theatres. If you want to protect our cultural identity, censorship is essential. However, persons who enacted various roles as Heroines should not be made as Chairman or member because they won't mind any scene going through without cut in the name of art and culture!

Indian culture is very ancient and great. We like to change these great culture to a american culture and we think that would be better. American culture is individual centered but indian culture is group centered. that makes the two far different and we should be very proud about our culture and should preserve it at any cost. We should care our moral values and that resists some contents that should not explicit publicly.

Whats wrong in preserving one's culture. In the name of modernisation, we can't be second America and in the name of boldness we can't make our industry vulgar and full with adultery. It will effect the life of common man especially children. There should be a strict regulatory board which supervises the category of a movie...

Absolutely not in favor. To vent out one’s so called “creativity”, do we need to sacrifice our values. Do we need to teach our children untimely about such creativity? Censor Board follows certain norms, which explicitly cover a pre-defined set of do’s and don’ts. In fact I was a CB Member for Malayalam Films and have censored a few films. I know to what extent a Member’s bias can influence the process. Hardly it happens, as judgment is made basis collective decision of the screening panel consisting of minimum 4 members. However, I feel it is imperative to reprimand those Movie Makers who violate the CB instruction. For example, there had been instances where the Directors interpolate scenes which were strictly instructed to be deleted from the reel. Censoring should be made more rigid!

When there is Censor Board, then also we are getting to lot of movies which shows lead actors using worst of languages. Most of the struggling film makers like Anurag Kashyap believes that showing hard reality of life is creativity. It is not. A child learns from their parents as well as micro and macro environment around them. Films being so popular in our country is one of the biggest macro environmental factor contributing shaping up life of any person in India. There are certain values a person want to pass on to their children to carry forward in society as well as next generation. And if there will be no censorship, frusteted film producers and directors will bring out porn and crime pictures in the name of creativity and audience demand.
