US auto giant Ford Motor Co on Wednesday unveiled its first small car for the Indian market, "Ford Figo". The Figo will be manufactured at the company's Chennai facility and launched in markets by early 2010. Recently Ford had said that the the Chennai unit is undergoing a $500-million upgrade as Ford seeks to make India a global production hub for its small cars.

The Figo is designed to compete in India's small car segment, which accounts for more than 70 percent of the market. Figo is a four door hatchback, powered by an indigenous diesel and petrol engine, but has not given out specific details like price and engine capacity.

The US auto major is keen to accelerate focus on emerging markets such as China and India with fuel-efficient products. Globally, consumers are seen to be moving towards fuel-efficient small cars and Ford India is currently present only in mid-sized cars and SUV segments.

Will Ford be able to gain market share in the small car segment which is a new entity for them?

I think India is a very big market Ms. Mridula and it can accomodate many players in this segment, and even world over people are going for these small and fuel efficient cars than the earlier gas guzzlers, so in a way the world is going Green and will go for small cars than big ones, and there is a huge potential in this segment and Ford which is a big name in the Auto industry, will bring in all their experience in the world market to make sure that this new car is a success in India.

This is a very crowded market place for their new car Figo, as small car segment is already having some big names like Maruti,Hyundai,GM and others with their cars doing really well at the moment and Ford in a way has not penetrated well with their mid sized cars and SUVs that good to have a market share really, and it will be hard for them to get a good grip in this segment when they are entering so late, but you never know India is a big market and an emerging market and if product is placed well & looks good and price range in the reach then one can see new player emerging in this category.

Though the market is crowded - Ford will definitely be able to differentiate itself and give value to customers. Being a global platform it will be bringing world class features and efficiency in the lines of what Hyundai brought in with its i10, i20 range of vehicles.

yes, Ford have huge market share for its small car in India because in India most people belongs to middle class families and hence its small car, so it would be affordable for them.

India is in growing stage and maximum people in india are in middle class segment..so people will try new car and ford is well known company so it is not that people are not aware about the company...So I think ford will be able to gain market share if it succeeds in satisfying customer's requirements and responses quickly to customer's problems.

Good business stategy is to 'Sell what people Buy'. Ford can not afford any slip up, now that it has survived through the tough conditions.

India is one of the biggest markets for small cars. Bringing in a Smart product in it's lineup gives Ford a much needed boost.

The car buyers in India are begining to explore their options other than Maruti cars. Also the fresh look of the car may attract young buyers towards Ford Showrooms.

I support what kailash sharma is telling ... India is a very big market if the quality of service & material is provided by manufacturer  and if they give the parts support then i think it will not be a big issue for the name like ford to take over the likes like tata, maruthi & hyundai...

Here one thing had to be taken that price is not the factor...but quality is important.

It is really a very tough job for Ford to enter smoothly and compete with existing players. The existing players have already set their shares well and are trying to capture more of each others share. And it is very tough to enter and survive in such situation. Biggest rival would be Maruti Suzuki. It has 6 different cars for middle segment and that to hatchbacks namely 800,Alto,Wagon-R,Swift,A-Star, & Ritz. Each one of them has some or other unique and good quality and fuel efficiency is very good according to the engines in the cars....

Until and unless Ford differentiates to a great extent, in price, style & one more important one is fuel efficiency, it very very difficult for ford to gain enough market share. And one more hurdle would be its name Ford. I dont think that it has got a good market share comparing to other market players. And except few cars like ford fiesta no other has gained much success. The image of Company does matter, which will make it more difficult for ford to lead positively

It’s really tough to compete with Maruthi Suzuki,Tata & Hyundai who are already established them self as small car manufacturer at the competitive pricing Ford can’t match the price war with them since they mainly depends on imports.

Anyway all the best to Ford to get success in the small car race.

Its good for ford to bring a small car to boost its volume. Its succes remains on its pricing strategy. If Ford would have launched it  four years earlier, when there were no Maruti swift, hyundai I20,Fiat punto,Tata vista, then it would have been a big success. In domestic market,if Ford  launches small car in 3-4 lac range then it would become a big hit.If the price is more than 4 lakhs then they will suffer in the domestic market, may be exports will fetch them some good orders.

small cars -- affordable cost --increased cars on road--increased emissions inspite of them being slightly more fuel efficient as compared to SUV's --- increased traffic congestions. Small car manufacture in india should be linked to better engine emission characteristics ,to be verified at design validation stage itself. Efforts to improve the quality of fuel are must.
