There are certain words in our vocabulary which are apparently synonyms, but if you trace out examples of linguistic expression as more often used, then arguably there do exists a subtle line of differentiation.

Two such words of expression are Luck and Fortune that are sometimes used interchangeably without much problem in understanding the context.

If we research thoroughly on verbal expressions, read between the lines and try to decipher the line of differentiation, then arguably some of the points emerge that can be explicable through some examples.

It seams that if you are tuned for something good in life then you are fortunate.

For instance, Consider a gifted kite flyer who had not to struggle or toil enough in order to possess a good quality kite and related accessories like string, string roll, a partner to support etc. , Naturally you can call this kite flyer as fortunate who can use his kite flying skills anytime, anywhere and use his inborn skills to fly the kite under any environmental condition.

Now consider another Kite flying enthusiast, who may or may not be a skilled kite flyer but participates in an important kite flying competition.  He manages to procure good kite and related accessories in time. He is lucky if the wind conditions are favorable at the time of the kite flying competition so that he is able to fly the kite and ultimately win the kite flying competition. May be he would have faltered if the wind conditions were not amenable to kite flying. Luck works in random and happens momentarily. Generally, Luck favors brave, optimistic and enthusiastic person.

It seems that Fortune as an expression has a stream like analog character with various intensities at various moments whereas Luck works discretely and randomly in a digital mode.

 What do you think?

Luck relates to something that occures accidentally without any logical assumption or presumption.

Fortune is always backed with action with an objective. One who fails to achieve success after efforts and action is called unfortunate and who gets desired result is called fortunate.

Fortune=Luck*(Efforts)

Where Luck & efforts ranges from 0 to infinity,,,

Its the Karma & Bhagya,,I feel & what is said,,goes together..or directly proportional,,, Even for winning a lottery...one has to buy the ticket...

Luck is the outside factor,,efforts all we can do....So lets work hard & leave the others to the almighty...

It is not for nothing that it is said "fortune favours the few". That is because I believe fortune, real fortune, is backed up by hard work and all that is good in a human being.

Luck on the other hand is a random event....totally disconnected. It is a like a bubble.

Akshay ji, a good topic, I strongly believethat fortune is an extension of luck. A person can't just wait for either good fortune or good luck to arrive. You create your own luck by the opportunities you take and or make and the results of said opportunities ultimately create your personal sense of fortune.

Fortune – Occurrence of an event when a person is in sync with the “Universe”. The “Higher Power” moves “things” to fructify the desire. Here, a person might have to overcome many odds and difficulties.

Fortune can be split into "For(e)" or Before and "Tune". i.e. First (or Before) Tuning into the receiving station of the Universe.

Luck – Something like winning a prize in a lucky draw (of entrance tickets) when I visit, say a business exhibition. My main purpose was to attend the exhibition in order to gain knowledge about my trade. One would not go to this event with a specific intention to participate and win in the lucky draw. It just happens that there was a lucky draw and I won. The better the prize the more the luck. It is like digging a well for water and finding a pot of gold in the process.

And then like Hemant said, in most cases a person who is in sync with the "Universe", (i.e.) a person with a positive outlook, is fortunate enough to be lucky :)

Yes, Basudev You are correct. Luck is beyond our control. Yes, it is true that Luck means anything happened without your fault or any good thing. Sometimes any good thing happened or some times bad without u r control.

Akshaya,

I believe you worked hard to originate this debate ... appreciated. Yes there is a thin difference in these two words therefore most of the time used as a synonyms.

LUCK means something happens which beyond a person control. Luck is good or bad, it is by accident or chance. Example is " you correctly guess an answer which you don't know. It is applicable to a person not to circumstances.

FORTUNATE means it is well efforted activity, since there is no other equivalent or bigger option hence selected. It is releted to a circumstance. example " I secured first position in GRE examination."

I think like that... I may be wrong... if so, please correct me.
