In a recent news article, it was said that a new pictorial warning will appear on every tobacco pack sold in India from June 1 which will be having scariest pictures that will repulse tobacco users, in turn helping them to quit smoking or chewing tobacco.

The health ministry's latest notification, has chosen a gory picture of a rotting cancer-stricken mouth to appear on tobacco packs. The warning will cover 40% of the tobacco pack in all local languages with the message 'Tobacco Kills' and 'Tobacco Causes Cancer'.

So users, do you agree that scarier pictures in tobacco packs will help in reducing smoking habits?

I agree with this statement. Pictures with shock value will make smokers quit. Earlier, warnings were feel good. While one depicted a scorpion, the other two was an X-ray plate of a TB patient's chest and a photograph of a cigarette stub with a cross sign over it. Also, the warnings can't be soft. It has to convey the ills of tobacco smoking and chewing. Pictorial warning labels, that can convey risks of smoking to the large number of illiterate adults in India who smoke, will be a particularly effective strategy.

Maybe a few years from now, will the various governments realize and take cognaisance of the impact of smoking on human race with regards to morbidity and mortality. we may then have a few more villians in the history text books like B&H, Marlborough, 555 sharing space with Hitler and Idi Amin.

Wow.Excellent horrible pictures.Surely 80% of people will quit smoking because they brought the real pictures on the packet cover. Here , the another beauty is even illitrate people also will get scare by seeing those pictures.Previously they printed the slogans but it will never worked due to people surviving in busiest schedule, they dont have time to read those slogans. But now it's not like that.Surely will see those scariest pictures atleast for 50 sec.Oneday they will realise their health condition.Really we have to appreciate the govt. diplomatic initiatives to rescue the people from drastic things.Surely everyone will welcome this.

Hey Bindu, a debate of today. If only pictorial warnings could change a habit! A changed pictorial warning would appear from June but its been a while that tobacco packets are already carrying the warning. Ask the manufacturers, have the sales dropped ever since? Use scariest of all pictures, habits die hard. Older the habits, harder the path. And the pictiures that look scary in 4-colour production, give an ordinary look when the same are printed in 2-colour format and in a small size.

Not supporting NO since I'm a smoker myself, its just another attempt from concerned authorities assuming that their act would repulse tobacco users and help them quit smoking or chewing tobacco. Giving a small example. Few city governments have declared NO SMOKING ZONES but can they start NO TOBACCO CHEWING ZONES ever.

Would just take this as another of compulsive drive from our government, nothing more than that.

I really dont agree that such Pictorial Presentation will help....

nobody is bothered what is there on Upper side... everybody is bothered what and how many are inside..??

Packaging in Cigarate Market does not help a lot as ppls are Brand consious and not packaging consious... whatever written or pictured on Screen its movie makes sense... that is how the thing is and I dont fill it will help anybody to quit smoking and tobacco etc...

and S hike in Prices and additional Taxes and Duties can make more effect that can be seen on consumption pattern rather than Pictures and all....

We have used this kind of tactics earlier also by using messages, warnings and many things in tobacco and cigarette packets. He who is concerned about his health has left intoxicating but the addicted had no effect on them. So, we can be sure of one thing, he who wants to quit using tobacco, will quit in any way but he who doesn't want, no matter how much picture you use, will keep on chewing tobacco.
