Fuel cell-powered Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-CELL announced

The fuel cell powered Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-CELL

Mercedes-Benz has announced its first limited production fuel cell car, the B-Class F-CELL. Production will begin towards the end of this year and first of around 200 vehicles will be delivered to customers in Europe and the US early next year.
The B-Class F-CELL’s electric motor produces 100kW (136bhp) and 290Nm of torque. Range is 385km and top speed is about 170km/h. ‘2009 is the year in which we are establishing further milestones where sustainable mobility is concerned. The B-Class F-CELL is taking on a pioneering role as the world's first fuel cell powered automobile to be produced under series production conditions,’ says Dr Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler

AG. Dr Weber is responsible for Group R&D for Mercedes-Benz cars.

The zero-emissions F-CELL uses a compact, high-performance fuel cell system in which gaseous hydrogen reacts with atmospheric oxygen at 700 bar, to generate current for the electric motor. This fuel cell system has very good cold-start capabilities and the B-Class F-CELL will start at even temperatures as low as -25 degrees Celsius. The B-Class F-CELL also uses a lithium-ion battery, with an output of 35kW to boost power and recover braking energy.

According to Mercedes-Benz, the operational reliability of the B-Class F-CELL is of the same high level as in Mercedes vehicles with conventional combustion engines. However, before hydrogen fuel cell vehicles like this can really hit the motoring mainstream, a comprehensive network of hydrogen filling stations has to be set up wherever such vehicles are used. And while government authorities in certain regions in Europe and the US are already working on setting up a hydrogen infrastructure, it is, for now, still a distant dream – if not an impossible one – in India and elsewhere in Asia

I support fuel cells. They are possible and are far better than engines having 2400 moving parts that need constant replacements. This is the second commercial fuel cell car sold in the world, Honda FCX is the first one. The only barrier is the cost of the Fuel Cells, which is fast dropping.

About the infrastructure I stand to differ. It is easy to make Hydrogen from CNG(steam your CNG). From my view point India is establishing a country wide network for distribution of CNG for cooking and vehicles. Infact our CNG infrastructure will be far ahead of even our petrol/diesel infrastructure in the next few years. In this accord we are far ahead of US/Europe, where they can transport only small amounts of CNG/Hydrogen. Now with CNG infrastructure in place its easily possible to set up hydrogen stations across the nation in no time. One could go to a CNG station and buy CNG or Hydrogen depending on the car. As time goes we can convert the infrastructure to transport Hydrogen instead of CNG.

We are also more likely to find more ways to make more CNG in the next few years.

well of coz  ..no doubt it is  practical ..but yes  it has  its certain disadvantages

like  the cost factor

and  then the weight  in the  caras  well ..and plus the refuelling part ...thns r  not so developed  that we start using hydrgen cells all of sudden....and also that it takes  time to set up the car with d climate and  enviorment changing  ..

with hydrogen cells heat generated will b high ...

One of our friends opinion is that it is possible to set H2 fueling stations but the problem is the cost. But According to me to set up a new idea involves with the huge cost.

Keeping the future requirement in mind govt should act upon the requried things. We can't relay on the Available fossile fuels. We Should not wait for the time. Should strike as fast as possibe to ensure that we are going to be safe in the future,

The concept of introducing H2 fuel cell car was tried by HONDA in 2007 and was rejected by ARAI in india. Govt is not taking any further actions abt the counties well being.

India should look forward and try to make an attempt to catch these new technologies.

Nothing is impossible. India has got the potential to do but govt not taking it seriously.

well it is practcal sir ..but then wat again comes is the cost factor ..i mean indians will b thnkn twice before going for fuel cell..so i would suggest a hybrid car ..with an engine a conventional engne to charge the batteries as me and my team did in our final ear project

You are right Mr. rao, fuel cells are practically possible. Many vehicles are introducing batteries in them these days. But they are still in Primary stage. Still it needs time to develop....

i support your opinion. nothing can be done instantaniously. Every need to be improve gradualy. Step by step implimentation of the ideas is going to be a good thing.

It is not possible to instal fueling stations all over the country is not a small thig.

coming to the cng initialy people were using domastic gas cylinders.Laters govt started installing fueling stations. Now you can see cng pumps. And automobile companies also starter to cng kit.

So if you really think of changing the system, then it is quite posible.
