There has been increasing fight between the existence of functional PM over a period of time in india markets, now i have worked in projects where there were functional PM and tech PM, and the functional PM was more over the domain, team management, client management side where as the tech PM was more on the tech side operating internal and this combination gave us great success, now do we have such practices in indian markets or people tend to save money by making one tech PM fight on all fronts, let me know your views on this and how do you perceive both of them

Thanks

Neeraj

When compared to the Information Technology (IT) trend that was existing 15 years before, we were creating purely technical managers. Reason, popularity of IT as a separate technology was just growing say from the year 1985 onwards for a decade. During this period one would have noticed that a civil engineer by profession was also in IT in some area working on a IT technical job and finally reaching to a technical manager or so. Ultimately the civil engineer did not function where his functional involvement has to be. Probably he might have been an expert in the functional aspect in his field. Still there was no proper application that allowed him to see the functionality and technicality separately.

But now, situation is entirely different due to systematic changes that occured in the field of manufacturing and technology. One has to be more responsible towards Functional Processes than merely looking in to the technical process. Say, for a product development, in current suituations you definetly need a separate functional manager to concentrate on functional aspect of a product design if that product had to come up well. Thus, technical managers can just concentrate on techicalities of the product / system. Thereby the quality of the product / system will drastically improve. Functional PM is needed to demarcate the functionality of the system that is being designed or manufactured. In the absence of Functional PM, the Technical PM will be expected with more knowledge and responsiblity and will be loaded with too many activities such that the quality of the product / system will definetly need an attention.

product process knowledge or you can also call it the domain expertise which belongs more to the functional managers, technical managers can look at the technical aspects of project, now when a tech and a functional pm works on project the qulaity of the product is far more superior

Technical Project Management is for people involved in all forms of development work. At the edge of knowledge, doing tasks in areas that where company experience is limited, or Research and Development, Engineering Development, New Software, Manufacturing Process Development, Scale up, or simply stretching into new areas.
