Makarand, good to see you back here after a long time.:) While I agree to a large extent with what Makarand has to say, I still believe that it is a disciplined approach that helps you to take each day as it comes. Any day that does not turn out to be as expected, needs to be tackled in a manner that gives the best results. A disciplined approach helps one to analyse and understand why things have gone wrong and what measures need to be taken to overcome these shortcomings.

While taking the day as it comes sounds more realistic, one needs to realise that if one is not focused or disciplined while tackling issues, there is always a danger of succumbing to the twists and turns that life brings. Being prepared for the worst is the best way to tackle each day.

Ujwal :)) Loosing a job would be a sheer case of the boss not liking his subordinate to be smarter than him!! In short, even if the sub was disciplined and focussed in his work approach if he was a little more proactive to his boss... would have saved him the blushes of the DAY!! Ravindra :) Failure in process which is like breathing to these people is purely LAZINESS or ARROGANT attitude towards one's responsibilities!! I also routinely check if I am carrying my wallet everyday as that is one focus I need!! What I am saying here is that if the checks were done not because they were regular but because of the fact that they are electrical components whose life cycle depends on the everyday process I am sure people would approach these areas on a daily basis i.e. taking each day as a new one!! If I seem weird its because you guys draw every ounce of my grey area before I can answer you :)) Over to you Gentlemen

Inderpalji / Ravindra This is really what i like about the group that I am linked with including Ujwal, Alka, Nitin Aras and all the others... Responses that provoke you to think that extra thought!! I didnt know what today would bring to me, seriously!:)) What is the difference between a man who is working for the Services of the Indian government (Army, Infantry, Navy etc) and the common man (Mango People) like you and me?? The difference is Discipline, Focus on the job at hand and the risk it presents!! We are working towards the same principles "Security & Safety". Different Agenda: Services are for the people to be safe, we are for the country to progress allowing these services to make it safe!! We are the people who look to a different day everyday and they are the ones who plan well in advance and then propel on it. The fundamental is that our workings bring us more surprises and their workings can bring them surprises that can ruin the country!! The example is to bring to light the stark contrast of workings and not the results. Over to you gentlemen... Thanks once again for your responses

No two days are going to be the same, and no two situations, either. ALACRITY is the key. Take things as they come is the right approach. How will it happen? For that one has to be very clear in his approach and should have very strong mental preparedness to handle any situation. For people on top, there could be great danger waiting at your doorstep for folly of someone under you. For that one has to have a strong mettle and forthright decision making power without procrastination to scuttle any derailment. I agree with Makrand Bhave in this!

Dear Ravindra You overwhelm me, and I am grateful. Lets take a close look at what you have said, "we have to plan and complete the day in a disciplined manner so may be differences actually arise in long term -medium term or short term time plan, since knee jerk can not really take us anywhere you may agree therefore focus is essential".... Taking the day as it comes is being aware of the fact that there is something coming your way everyday. Its a mental preparedness to take the day HEAD ON. Focus on the task and approach to the task are important once you have been able to decipher what the task at hand is asking out of you. So i would focus and plan a disciplined approach only after I have crystallised the idea and method in which I am going to DEAl with the ISSUE! But to deal with the issue my mind is OPEN, thinking out of the box and even BIZZARE! It gives me an all round ability towards the outcome. Thats my thought, over to you ...

Dear Mr Moss Well said Sir!! How would you differentiate whether you have succeeded? If the measure of success was in the fact that you succeeded, you wouldn't be able to know whether the share that you have achieved is the right share or not? Likewise, if there was no darkness, would you define a Day? What I am coming to is that being focussed and disciplined is definitely the order of the day once the task is in hand, but before you process it to take it to its fruition, a trained approach limits your processing! Whereas a random approach would allow you the freedom to think and process the task on the merit that its supposed to be processed. The fact that you need to go back to the drawing board after you have tackled an issue tells you that the approach was wrong and hence the drawing board. That more often than not happens when you are using a tried and tested method because the measure is known. But an innovative process and an equally bizzare approach would give a quantum not expected or nothing at all. At least the option of getting "MORE" is open. Over to you Gentlemen!

If you're focussed and disciplined to a certain extent its good, but when it comes to dictating to others, it's not required. Creativity can harvest only in an ad hoc enironment without rigid rules n regualtins.

There are hits and misses in both the aspects of this debate, bust as Makarand said I too believe that taking each day as it comes gives you freedom of thought and innovation. Though I do not completely disagree with the opposition, but still strongly believe in taking each day as it comes...... :)

I am overwhelmed!! Thank you so much you all. Focussed and discipline certainly seems the order of the day. What I would like to state here is that a focussed approach might make your vision a tunnel and not allow you to see or analyse the work at hand from the bigger universe. The mind is trained that way. Flexibility in the approach lends that little bit of extra spring in the thought process and maybe even puts in that extra effort of looking at things from different perspectives. Thew mind is not acting towards the work in a trained manner but with the independence or influence of any thought which allows you the freedom of thinking of looking at it from a very OPEN or even OUT OF THE BOX view!! Taking each day as it comes allows you that freedom of thought and innovation and may even bring to the table an experience of success of doing that earlier task right because you thought about it differently!! Over to you gentlemen. p.s LOVELY POEM ALKA!! Thanks for your support as always. Thanks to you all once again!!

I don't really practise this philosophy , and would not recommend it as a way of life , because whether you like it or not , tomorrow eventually becomes today ! The future will be on us , and any kind of preparation that we make towards meeting it , will help.

Most of us who have daughters , believe in saving money , because we know that our daughters' marriages will be a milestone in their lives and ours. Dowry , even when not demanded , is implicit , in the sense that we would like our daughters to go to their new homes , with their heads held high. Such situations demand that we plan and be disciplined in our approach , not that we take it one day at a time.

However , one way to understand this concept is that every day is a new day. Whatever may have happened yesterday , today can be different ; failures can be forgotten , but so also should successes. Which is why we have the saying "do not rest on your laurels". We are seeing such a crisis in the Indian cricket team's tour of England. "Past success is no guarantee of future performance" , as all those who have invested in shares will testify.

So , approach each day as a new one , where you have to once again stand and deliver. Time is the only measure which God has given to all equally , so make the best of it.

I would second Makarand with the help of the following beautiful poem by "David Harris"

We take each day as it comes
never knowing what we might find.
Some days are filled with sunshine
that brightens up our lives.
Some days are filled with rain
in these we feel life’s pain.
Some days are golden
filled with a warm loving glow
that fills us from head to toe.
Some days are black
when sorrow is rife
and we shed tears through the night.
Always me must take
each day as it comes
never knowing what we might find.
Making the most of what we get
as each day marches through.
We must live our life for now
and take tomorrow when it comes.
Holding on to what we have
for as long as we can.

Taking each day as it comes is the most positive attitude and also approach towards life according to me because if you have planned things and then if situations or things do not flow as planned it leads to disappointments. Taking each day as it comes holds many surprises, fun, challenges and so on... what say people???

After a big gap of absence, I am back here again. Wish I could devote or dedicate more time in understanding more debatable issues or ideations or trends, but I just had to bid my time in order to really focus on my own life first! Life takes you through a cycle where you might just have a windfall one day when you are least expecting it and may whitewash you when you are least expecting it. But what needs to be understood is that in each of these situations it is YOU who are fundamentally involved. The reasoning or excuses that people give are purely damage repair exercises. There is a fundamental for working and that has to be either followed or has to be evaluated as every day is a new day!! My fellow colleagues I call upon your experiences to debate here the same. This might sound very generic to you but mind you its not!! You might find this baseless but believe you me its not!! As this debate unfolds you will find that you are all gaining a very useful insight... not inside the economy or the country but as leaders or pawns in your industry, it offers an insight into YOU!! The ball is in your court...

if one is going to take everything as it comes, the significance of human effort is lost. Our approach should never be casual. It should be focused and disciplined.

Dear Makrand,

Each of us is unique and follow discipline in our own way. Some do it earlier others may do it later yet to be successful and last in that position discipline is a component already in place.

Thanks for challenging discussion after all frequently exercising grey cells would only help them revitalise.

Dear Makrand,

A healthy subjective discussion by itself is discipline when we retain focus on subject and are compelled to answer even when we may not have planned so.

Coming to the subject of limiting discipline to forces. Just imagine the thought process of affected area I/C from navy and Coast-guard where these two ships suddenly appeared. They would not have imagined their ears and eyes upon being informed/ sighting of what hit them. That there was a failure in checks and balances which led to an advance warning days before as information in advance turn into sudden surprise. Now imagine a person on a hot summer road, who before starting, failed to check radiator coolant for days. It results in overheating and engine seizure.......is somewhere the failure of a disciplined approach to adhere regularity and check in advance.

It is really a pleasure to participate in what Makrand posts here....and to feel the sheer energy of the discussion.

Coming to the debate...there may be some people, some here might have came across, who just loose their jobs/tasks at the 11th hour of their lives.

So, disciplined approach, i.e. proper future planning done for that last 10 hours yields necessary support for that '11th hour' disaster.

Also Makrand you are very right for the certain events in life as well as in profession, that are totally out of human understanding & are seem to be completely uncalled for....and for that a brave man/woman has the capacity to turn the events upside down while facing the day as it comes, at least theoretically it seems plausible!

Responding to what Makarand mentions as, "Taking the day as it comes is being aware of the fact that there is something coming your way everyday".....

Knowing that each day is different makes it even more important that I be prepared for the same. Taking on each day in a planned manner can produce very different results and satisfaction than a "fire-fighting approach".

I agree that it is not possible to know what is going hit you tomorrow or how different tomorrow would be from today or yesterday, but being prepared seems to be the strongest vaccine available!

Thanks Makrand for response,

And agreeing that we have to remain in focus and handle with discipline weather it is for challenges that pour with the day's progress or as planned. "Head on" merely indicates the approach and levels of energy devoted to the subject, I feel and you may agree.

I agree with Dr. Shannon Reece - The end of the day is the time when business owners carefully reflect on successes and lessons learned (there are no failures), in order to effectively plan for the future. If you don’t know where you want to go, you can’t expect to ever get any where. So it’s imperative to plan your work, and then work your plan. Just as businesses come in all shapes and sizes, there are a variety of tactics an entrepreneur can employ when creating or revising a plan. Think long term.

If you believing in simply drifting ...then it is apt to say 'take the day as it comes' but if you want to achieve a goal or set a mark or be a factor of change to the way we are...you need to be foucused and disciplined and should have persiverance to follow & make your dreams come true

Thanks Mr.Anand for your invitation... Thanks Mr.Makrand for the topic...

Marketing & Sales we ought to be ready for situations with our Logic and IQ as that's the basis of our existence or else we can easily be replaced by robots.

Yet without focus and discipline we land up nowhere...

What I practice & suggest is vigorous planning, focussed, disciplined energetic approach and be ready while implementing for what and as it comes. Problems, hurdles, obstacle are the entry gate for opportunities...

Hi Makrand,

Your coming back would certainly better the levels of discussion as it improves when answers come from informed yet the general participation levels have really dipped in your absence. So even though not really away rarely feel app to answer.

Even when saying " take the day as it comes" you would agree we have to plan and complete the day in a disciplined manner so may be differences actually arise in long term -medium term or short term time plan, since knee jerk can not really take us anywhere you may agree therefore focus is essential.  Therefore in effect you would agree, focus and discipline are a must, only the degree of their application can vary at best.

Focused & disciplined approach is definitely required even though you may not be sure of certain uncertainties that may arise each day. A focused approach will help in calmly tackling each day as it comes and will help a person in being relaxed and cool at the end of the day.
