Embedded systems are pretty much anything that has computer logic beyond a circuit board and some chips; something that has a UI. It can be a cell phone, a DVR, DVD player, etc. Think of most consumer electronic devices. An embedded computer system is designed to perform a single task, and is "embedded" in a larger unit.

With Multicore n all, i thin the line is blurring......

Most embedded systems i.e designed with a particular function in mind can be happily used as general purpose computers.....

A General Purpose computer is one that doesn't have a set function, like a desktop or laptop. Different software can be put on it to allow it to have different purposes.

Embdded systems  are stand alone systems and customised for a specifice purpose. In coming generations it will be very difficult to find a sinle electronic gudget without ES. Now what is the real challenge is how they communicate will be a tedious task.........
