There's good news for those who use cable television services. From now on you can now check your Gmail, watch YouTube videos or connect with friends on Facebook at the cost of the regular cable subscription of Rs. 150-200 per month - without having to pay extra for an internet connection.

A Noida-based manufacturer of cable infrastructure called Logic Eastern, has developed special set-top boxes which come with an in-built patented hardware that enables connections to Gmail, Facebook and YouTube. The company has made possible two-way flow of data, that is, from websites to cable operators to consumers and return by using the existing cellphone technology.

The company has installed large servers which download Gmail, YouTube and Facebook pages on behalf of its subscribers and pushes them on to their television screens. For now, consumers can access this service with a special remote control. However the company is developing a wi-fi keyboard that will be given along with the set-top boxes. Also, apart from the remote control, consumers can use their mobile phones to surf channels or access these websites.

I think the other DTH players in this category like Big tv, Airtel ,Dish tv, and many other local players, do not have this kind of service, and the idea behind this is great and who knows in future there might be other popular websites making their entry through cable tv, and with the wi-fi keyboard and other tools with this set top box, I think this will find enough subscribers in urban areas, may be even in rural areas where interenet connectivity is so low, with DTH providers giving them internet, I think this will change the face of internet in the country.

Although, the concept seems fair, I think when weighed against the scopes for the long run, it could well be a make weight. Particularly for one reason that transmission of data can be optimised by employing advanced technologies such as fibre optic broadband for fixed-line and LTE or WiMAX for the mobile, resulting in the bundling of all these services in a single package. It can also be predicted that with the popularisation  of some of the state of the art display technologies such as OLED we could well see an optimisation in the TV as well, in terms of mobility.

Even if we stress the TV as an entertainment outlet for multiple consumers - say more than two family members - at the same time, still arguments such as the older generation's aptitude towards the goodies such as Facebook and Twitter would come to the fore. In the case of youngsters it is a matter of doubt if they would accept it for the proven fact that they might opt for privacy rather. On the whole, could be a good alternative for housewives, to spend time allotted to them between soaps.

Nevertheless, nicely presented Inani.

Slowly there will be privelege for more sites to get covered in this tech but start has been made.

I dont think they ll find more subscribers, people use internet for personal things and to check personal mails, and I don't think one will do that when everybody is watching TV or when everybody is around in the house, so it will be very hard for something like this to workout, as there will be less privacy, as most of the time TV will be in a place where all the family members can view, so its difficult to find subscribers, though it sounds good like, internet on your cable TV, but more complexities all along.
