Dear friends,

Gmail has suffered a world-wide outage yesterday. This was due to a traffic jam on its servers. And now the enterprises feel that they simply can't have outages of their most vital applications. The enterprises want cloud computing to be a rock-solid . They are also likely to opt for reliability over cost-savings. Will this issue reduce the usage of cloud computing?

Yes cloud computing will boom up in the enterprise, as the main advantage is the enterprise dont want to spend on the IT support and it can be managed by the google itself.

Everyone knows that cloud computing is growing and this outage will alert other cloud providers to take proper measures. Definitely google & other internet providers will be ready for such recurrences which creates inconvenience to corporate users.

there ARE much less (and much shorter) outages than without cloud!!

Yes, this will trigger discussions within the enterprise as it impacts the business continuity of the enterprise. Unless there exists an acceptable mitigation and contingency plan for this risk, Enterprises will be skeptical on going with Cloud computing.

Yes this outage will cause a great impact on the enterprises because Email is a critical tool and outages are unacceptable. And now the enterprises feel that they simply can't have outages of their most vital applications. Enterprises have always been concerned about reliabaility. Such outages will only make them uncomfortable with internet based services.......

As Cloud computing is relatively new arch. it is bound to have issues. Buts lets accept the fact that nothing can be perfect and issues/bugs will keep appearing no matter what. Even the greatest softwares in the world have bugs and thats how new versions are released. This is a fact that cannot be denied. And as for google opting out of cloud computing is not even a debate topic - they will better it further.

For sure such failures must be avoided, however such failure help us to understand the issue & make the technology better

this ia hard to believe. companies could have discussed much more in the past (when outages were much more and longer (compared to clouds))

A Technology that is evolving is bound to have some hichups and over a period get to be more stable.

While it is debatable whether cloud computing as a technology is attractive, outage is just one of the risks that it is prone to. That by itself cannot make a case for cloud computing to be abandoned

Outage is bad but at times you have to live with it as a Architect/Manager one can have plans to minmize the outage risks in the applications however 100% uptime is a tough task.

Any ways cloud computing minimize the outage risk so if you compare data of self hosted apps vs apps hosted on cloud .... Cloud will be a better option

the decision is very easy for everybody. simply compare the number and duration of outages under cloud computing with your previous environment. i've been doing this for more than three years now. the comparison i mean.

if the above isn't clear enough, let me re-phrase: i've been using the cloud intensively for more than three years. i experienced much less outages an these lasted much much shorter.

Exactly! the comparison obviously will better the decision. Moreover, provisioning for the cloud is a specialization, these are just preliminary teething problems. Over the peiod of time these issues will disappear.

I don't think this outage wil impact scope of cloud computing. These thing occurs once in a while and every service providers have contingency plan to tackle these kind of issues.

Cloud computing is a big thing it can't be impacted by seldom one outage, yes it make alert to service providers for future events.
