According to Mr. Hawking : God did not create the universe and the "Big Bang" was an inevitable consequence of the laws of physics, the eminent British theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking argues in a new book. In "The Grand Design," co-authored with U.S. physicist Leonard Mlodinow, Hawking says a new series of theories made a creator of the universe redundant, according to the Times newspaper which published extracts on Thursday. "Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist," Hawking writes. "It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the universe going." Hawking, 68, who won global recognition with his 1988 book "A Brief History of Time," an account of the origins of the universe, is renowned for his work on black holes, cosmology and quantum gravity. Since 1974, the scientist has worked on marrying the two cornerstones of modern physics - Albert Einstein's General Theory of Relativity, which concerns gravity and large-scale phenomena, and quantum theory, which covers subatomic particles. His latest comments suggest he has broken away from previous views he has expressed on religion. Previously, he wrote that the laws of physics meant it was simply not necessary to believe that God had intervened in the Big Bang. He wrote in A Brief History ... "If we discover a complete theory, it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason -- for then we should know the mind of God." In his latest book, he said the 1992 discovery of a planet orbiting another star other than the Sun helped deconstruct the view of the father of physics Isaac Newton that the universe could not have arisen out of chaos but was created by God. "That makes the coincidences of our planetary conditions -- the single Sun, the lucky combination of Earth-Sun distance and solar mass, far less remarkable, and far less compelling evidence that the Earth was carefully designed just to please us human beings," he writes. Hawking, who is only able to speak through a computer-generated voice synthesizer, has a neuro muscular dystrophy that has progressed over the years and left him almost completely paralyzed. He began suffering the disease in his early 20s but went on to establish himself as one of the world's leading scientific authorities, and has also made guest appearances in "Star Trek" and the cartoons "Futurama" and "The Simpsons." Last year he announced he was stepping down as Cambridge University's Lucasian Professor of Mathematics, a position once held by Newton and one he had held since 1979.

There is no God.It was a concept to understand the surrounding, nature and the universe which was percieved at the early stage of human evolution. But as the human being become more rationale and science evolved,we used to know more precisely all the above things....still we have to unravel many mysteries but for time being we have unravel so much that we should not put God behind the unravelled mysteries....till few years ago the theist used to mock scientists for if there is no God then reproduce a baby without an intercourese...now scientist have proved more than that....A WOMAN CAN REPRODUCE A BABY WITHOUT ANY INVOLVEMENT OF MAN.Thus for understanding things we devise some theories but they can be wrong too. This is the case with the concept of God.Dear Akshaya Bhatiya, when a child takes birth he knows nothing, but as the time passes he knows many things through his experience and proper teachings...we could not know all the mysteries but it does not mean that we should quit learning,evolving...one day science will create many things which are unexpected to many orthodox too...what their deity could not do...even in their epics....science is doing and will do in reality...!!!!

An age old topic debated frequently, may people want their name to be highlighted or talked about.By that time the next person says the same thing.Only presentation style varies. We have invented so many things but not created Sun,Moon,Sea,Mountain etc.Nothing can emerge of its own.

guys come on.. we created GOD(or SUPERNATURAL ?! power..i see even light as a super natural power :-) ) for our own emotions and deciplined life... unfortunately human got the sense of thinking else everything will go fine :-) life and universe is 0(zero)... everything that cant be reasoned or undefined appears like zero(though not exact Zero in shape)

" When we define ZERO i hope we can remove all the knots "

This thinking might look simple.... even falling of apple looked simple for people lived during newtons period...

ya in my point of view, hawking is right. since the unverse is created after a BIG BANG as u all might b knowing. we are just fortunate that the earth is positioned at exact livable spot! or else if earth was a bit away from sun, than v could have died due to cold and vice versa due to heat!

I dont say god isnt htere, but god have many other imp things to do for the betterment humanity.

God is only a believe and nothing else, The Geeta, The Quran, The Bible, etc get birth in the span on 100 years near by all three subjects, we r the one who make to believe in god to maintain peace atleast in world, so carry ur believe in god and accept that earth is not the gods creation. Its all evolution and now many more changes we need to see, So Best of Luck.

No Pandey ji 'God' is 'still' not a failed concept. Infact for somebody as weak as human being this is a very useful concept. Doesn't matter whether it actually exists or not.

Nonetheless, as I said, God is a system which inspires individuals and runs the business of universe. Hence, we can infer that nothing is done by human himself The system gets it done by him. The popular version of this is, "God's grace."

Good to see your response Akshayaji,In science theories are not whimsical...we propose theories on the basis of certain logics, rules and proofs. And test them on many levels to verify.Undergoing all these levels we do some rectifications, innovation if needed....and doing so certain new rules, theorems, laws come up....this is the process of learning,if you dont face a prob. you cant learn and thus cant evolve....if our great ancestor scientists would  accepted that the God is behind all the happening around then they could not find any problem in explaining the nature,universe....and thus we could not evolve to this day...i have given example also to prove wrong the protagonists of science....its so pitiable that every time people raised question against science, sooner or later science gave the solid answers but even then THE PEOPLE USED TO QUESTION WITH SOME OTHER UNRAVELLED MYSTERIES....THE SAME PEOPLE WHO ARE ENJOYING THE LUXURY DISCOVERED THROUGH SCIENCE...NOT BY GOD....!!!I accept that the religious scriptures have many good things too especially mentioned in veda,am not against the scripture totally,I can say this on the basis of in depth study of a few classic writings of Hindu religion,am against a failed concept ie God.

God by atheist's understanding is a beleif. Even the beleivers can't see or show the physical existence of the God. Though one can feel the presence of a power. Different individuals have got different experiences with this power. Since vocabulary is and will never be able of explaining these experiences hence the name God.

But physically if there is something like God then that is this system called UNIVERSE. Hawking is right that the laws of physics run this universe. There is a system formed by these laws. That system is God. To understand it better it is like a government or a company which is not an individual in itself but runs the business.

Krishna's "vrihad roop" in Gita is probably the same message.

according to Hawking, Physics is the creator, lets put it this way that this is the name bywhich Hawking calls the same super power which is popularly known as GOD. God is omnipotent and manifests himself in many ways. Hawking has surely attained the highest place in knowledge and has now started mingling science and God, he him self is trying to find his way beyond knowledge . God is beyond knowledge where as science can be defined

Pandey Ji, Good to see that you are logically align with my argument that Science goes by logic and proof, and not by whimsical theories.

Now read carefully what a noted scientist suggests.

Hawking suggests "Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist”.

Now please explain the logic or any proof of the theory that universe can or will be created by itself or from nothing.

How will you define or describe nothing or null?

Who is the creator of Null?

If one universe can create an-other universe by itself spontaneously then who is the creator of the first universe?

How can our existence related to existence of universe? What is relation between law of gravity and existence of universe?

 Is not this whimsical?

Ironically the one who formulated the Law of Gravity, Isaac Newton is not just believer of GOD but also of other occult sciences such as Astrology?!

Furthermore, the science did not develop in order to negate the supernatural power but out of curiosity in order to decipher the mysteries of the universe and explore the truth. Whatever you see as inventions or discoveries attributed to the great scientists those are byproducts of the real mission of the science.

How can you say GOD is a failed concept? If GOD was a failed concept then majority of people would not be theist and there would not be so many followers of so many religions and related spiritual sects.

Even the best of scientists don’t subscribe to that. For instance, Isaac Newton, Galilleo and Thomas Edison, the undisputed legendary scientists, whose contribution to the science would be million times greater than most of the scientists who proclaim to be atheists, have in writing submitted existence of some supernatural power which some called GOD.

Man has never created any thing so far, but only discovered. Man made discoveries as per the energy level and magnetic field of the period he lived. physics, chemistry mathematics are the discovery or invention of man. But "Energy" cannot be created nor distorted. All creations whether self created or by a second or third force it cannot be any thing other than "Energy and magnetic field". In the modern scientific world let us name the energy as God and the magnetic field as angles of God.

dear mr pandey, neither u r totally wrong nor fully right. as we are indian and we have vast knowledge bank, inherited, coming straight from great Rishis. those Rishis were not ordinary saints but scholars of highest order who themselves had the power to create, like Vishwamitra. the entire efforts which have so far been made to know the creation of universe have led to only one common feeling by believers and non believers and that was expressed by Newton too. That there is some power which creates, runs and destroys every thing all the time. That power is called by the name of Physics by Hawking. to sum it short, Hari anant Hari katha ananta, dehhe sune bahu vidhi santa

Pandey Ji, Science goes by logic and proof, and not by whimsical theories which have not basis at all. You can not pre-empt logic. It would be naive to suggest some day mysteries of the universe will unravel and till that day we should accept something that is illogical. Role of science is to explore and explain logically. So says our great scriptures Vedas which are surely not against logic or science.

Please understand, there is nothing against a child learning and attaining knowledge through use of his sensory organs and interaction with his environment. The scientists have taken clue from the nature and instinctively toiled for the inventions and discoveries that surround us. Incidently, Knowledge is not taught but is what you percieve and believe. Tell me, which the better machine is than human being which no scientist has been able to create till date?! What will happen will happen and science has no business to preemt and create ridicluous theories.

If the universe was created through laws of physics which are per-se not stable and keep on updated and researched till now, why not scientists apply these laws in order to create an alternate universe. That would prove their point logically and scientifically.

Ironically, it has become a fashion to decry the occult, the unknown and yet inexplicable in order to appear relatively more learned and one up.  Plausible theory is foundation of a practical discovery but theory should have some basis too. Hypothetically, If Hawkins says that a universe originated from nothing or null then he should also explain who is creator of the null, besides also describe anatomy of the null and prove existence of the null.

I have read some where a statement  that God has created the man on the sixth day from mud and on the seventh day man created God in the same way. Does any body knows the actual existence of  God. In my search the actual  existence of God is " The energy capable to think and imagine" that is the equal status of human spirit (soul). The life is combination of Energy and Water. If the God is energy, there is no creation is possible without energy. The rest, I leave it for everyone to think and debate if necessary.
