Google Brings Badges to Orkut : Is it a good strategy ??

Badges are an important part of game mechanics and while Foursquare has taken the whole concept to a different level (monetizable), Google has announced adding badges to Orkut. Depending on your activity on the site, you can collect a badge accordingly (the feature is not yet rolled out to everybody).

Yes this seems to be a good move by Orkut. Day by day the no of users are dropping out of orkut and preferring facebook. This badge system might get back its loyal users. This seems to be emotional approach by google, hope it works...

Not necesarrily because its a bit too late in the day as all the other sites already have similar features though they dont call it the same. I think social networking sites will have to keep re-inventing the wheel frequently given todays competition in that sphere.

Yes,Orkut is a primary step for learning a social community network site when people learn every thing then they move to the very effective professorial social net working site like FB, TS etc....

A next step towards ruling the social networking site battle by Google. Face book was founded by Mark Zuckerberg & now is privately owned by Facebook, Inc. Whereas Orkut is owned and operated by Google Inc. Survey shows that though Orkut is less popular in the United States than competitors Facebook and MySpace, it is one of the most visited websites in India and Brazil. Now it is like cyber war like situation where two giants will collide with each other to remain atop.

The use of badges on Orkut is a good move by Google to capitalize on the human need for peer recognition and other emotional factors. However, this may not be sufficient to stem the movement of users to other social networking sites, notably Facebook. Additional innovative measures may need to be implemented by Google to improve its user base over a period of time.

I dont think so that orkut will regain the popularity it had..As FB have more elegant features like integration into different appl..ppl will prefer to use the same.

Not at all..Orkut needs a complete makeover.facebook is way ahead in its chat functionality, apps and gaming and pages and updates load much quicker than orkut. Buck up Google..

No doubt, it is good strategy.  But, ultimately, this is business. Others(sites) also must be doing the same . In the days to come, many more  strategies are bound be adopted.

i would say these are the initial signs .We know that Google acquired 10's of companies developing social games .The work now is slowly coming out . Perhaps it is an experimental move before the roll out of something big . How much life does this and the yet to come games bring to orkut , only time will tell .
