Google, the world’s largest internet company, has pulled out of China rather than continuing to accept the self-censorship it was being subjected to as the price for operating there. On Mar 22, the company closed its flagship China-based Chinese language site google.cn, carrying out a threat issued two months ago in a dispute over censorship.

Having failed to convince Beijing to allow it to operate free of controls, the company now redirects users of the Google.cn service to its uncensored Google.com.hk site based in Hong Kong. However, "Great Firewall of China", China’s own system to censor the Internet, filters all web searches originating in China despite the move by Google.

So users, has Google made a smart move by pulling out its services in China?

Google has taken a smart move. The Chienese were not allowing it to operate freely in China and let Chienese news be published in Google and also wanted to control Google's activities. In this way, they wanted to keep the whole world in an illusion and carry out their selfish activities. Rather than compromising with the ethics of journalism, Google has taken a good decision to step out of China. Now, China will face the loss in economy which it could have generated through online services now, will reduce a lot due to not having support of Google.

No it is not correct decision. Every country has its own interest for the sake of the country and its people. Google cannot dictate the terms in any country including China.

First of all journalism should be impartial.  In China, ordinary peoples are slaves to the Communist Comrades.  They (communists) will not tolerate if any body is working / saying against them even if the whole world knows that they are wrong.  Communism is a synonym of dictator ship.  For example, see how North Korea is?  Google has done the right thing.  How can any body stay in a country where there is no freedom.  I have heard that the China had given the media what they have to report and not to report.  This is absurd.  Think that the state is telling us what we must think & not to think.  How we all feel?  Do any body who is supporting China in this issue, can agree with this.  If they massacre their own people in Tianmen Square & this should be not shown in the Google search engine, it is really against the Journalism and against the truth.  Who ever supports China in this issue, think about the ordinary people who lives there that they are told to live according the wishes of some Communists comrades??  Think about it

Have your way with the money and not the other way around.

It is amazing that no one is talking about this!!!

The government is giving away the house in order to stimulate the economy. YIPPEE!! The problem is that WE the taxpayers are stuck with the bill. Did you get anything out of it? I am going to guess no.

It is sad that we bailout the rich and stay poor. I am tired of it and here is my way of fighting back.

Go and GOOGLE “slickbudget” and yes it it one word. Click on the first site and discover how I have made my one man crusade a reality. There you will find the ways to cash in. Go to the “BANKRUPTCY” and “STOCKS” section to see things no one wants any of us to know.

If you are tired of living like a poor person, then check it out. I have found many ways to get some of our money back.

It's not the issue how well China is connected. Google is a search engine for exactly that, searching. In an "open market", Google and all the others must be allowed to be included for all the Internet users in China and everywhere else.

The old behavior by killing, imprison sources of information, which (might) be critical proofs that the leadership in China is much too old, out of time, living in the stone age, never touched a computer, afraid that their own failures come to light, or they have something to hide!

Incorrect. Country or not, but the reality is that if they connect to the world wide web, they must allow information go trough. The world is changing and sitting in a corner doing who knows what is not from this time anymore. It's globalization now, not some local dispute of a single person.

There are almost 2 billion people registered in the Internet at the moment, and China is acting like a little village head instead of endorsing it and grow withthe tide.

Hi Neelam

This is a very important topic and we greatly agree to this . China wanted to

monopolize the system. Google is world wide used site people and the world

relied on it. so if information has been monopolized means the person who

monopolises takes control of it. China wanted to extend its Land Grabbing

System and Google Move was very excellent and have executed at right time.

Regards

Robert

Chinese have their own version of  search engine Baidu, but it is focusing only domestic.  So, without Google, Chinese businesses can generate revenues using Baidu only within China.  Following Google, even more online companies may pull out due to censorship issues.  China is isolating itself from rest of the world.

In India, whichever party is running the Government,  is forced to concentrate on ethics than rude censorship.  Our democracy is always great, with very few flaws.

It isn't a good move of Google to quit from China just because it don't want to follow self censorship in a manner what China wants. Instead of quitting China , Google should respect China Internet Censorship Policies and should work under the guidelines of China government.

Google is a (profit oriented) software company and China is a soverign country. Whom to support first ?

To each and everybody 'country' is first. China have its own policies / priorities. Initially Google agreed to follow stipulations to start their business there. Now, reasons completely of their in-house's is pulling out of China but making improper allegations.

This is completely a "commercial decession" and we are none to comment.

i am in support  of the same. However, taking into consideration of the annual  profit from china, google shud take alternative decision or measure to avoid such circumstances to arise and not retreat from the present position. Can sumbody pls explain 2 me bout the further future plight of the emps in china working in google and if so then the competion level increase in consideration about upcoming companies driving its business in china and not in India considering the almost same wages on ratio of currency equivalency.Huge chunk of revenue is at loss and china being a competent company will definitely fight against the good will of the workforce of the country and not like India wherein sum states such as Kolkata will always involve in party politics rather thinking bout the upcoming workforce.think bout it!!!!!

p.s. i didnt meant to hurt anybody's feeling over here as i feel in a democratic country i am just using the features. Sorry if i did so.Thank you and regards.

China the only country have more technical skilled workers and Lots of Manufacturing industries. They already build very good base of customer networks...They no need of googles supports to market's their products now.

Moreover, they are using Singapore,Malaysia,Honkong as a Gateway of marketing their products. "So the door is always Open" to market their products.

As they wish, they want to maintain secray, stay away from world media..they are doing this...This is not going to affect them..

Google never had a majority share of the search engine market in China. This is because over 55 - 60% of the market was dominated by Baidu. That being the given case, unless it stuck around there was no way it was ever going to penetrate the 380 million internet user base of China. Given that they were unable to work with the double sided ethics of the Chinese Govt; but talking purely from a business perspective its going to be a very bad hit for them.

Many people still want Google to stay in China and maintain their stand on open knowledge, etc. But what the Chinese Govt. is essentially doing here is showing that they are very much in control of the "Open Market" of China. This being the case, Google would not be able to stay put for too long even as they would at the very best be blocked out (people wouldn't be able to browse their sites from inside China). Lets say they manage to break a deal with the govt; this will still let down the one thing that makes Google's business thrive - user trust.

So its a no win situation for them either way. But i personally feel they shouldn't exit the Chinese market now because they are all ready and poised to break into the market share dominated by Baidu (which is a perfectly fine search engine). They might even be able to pull off this entire fiasco to their advantage if they stay.

China has got the most number of Internet users across the world. Nearly about 380 million Internet users are from China itself. Secondly, Google also had a good penetration in mobile internet in China with China mobile deal, now even that has fallen apart.  So, I would say that Google has not taken a good decision by closing its office in China since it would face a huge loss because of this decision. Infact Bing will be laughing all the way with google going out of China.
