Apple may get a nasty surprise this holiday season by this year end; rumors are swirling that Google is planning on a holiday-season launch for the search behemoth’s new music download service.  According to a recent Reuters report, Google has been deep in talks with record labels and “hopes to have the service up and running by Christmas.”

Google’s service would be an iTunes challenger that would be deeply connected to the Android mobile operating system. As we reported over the summer, it seems the company plans to first launch a music download service and progress to an online subscription service by next year. Ultimately, “Google Music” would be a cloud-based subscription service with the ability to stream directly to Android mobile devices.

Will this Google Music service give a stiff competition to Apple's itunes which already has a strong foothold in this market?

Yes, finally here’s an entity with the reach, resources and wherewithal to take on iTunes as a formidable competitor by tying it into search and Android mobile platform. What you’ll have is a very powerful player in the market that’s good for the music business.

If Google can perfect a music downloading system and include some of the mobile-desktop syncing features, they just might have a killer app on their hands, one that would continue to allow Android to successfully challenge Apple’s iPhone in the mobile market, too.  So, this Google Music service can hit 2 birds with one stone.

Google Music is planning to launch its music service in time for the christmas holidays...

The possibilities of cloud based computing will become enticing in the future as it is the way forward and Google is planning to offer cloud based subscription services...

The tricky part for Google, however, will be launching something that's a viable alternative to iTunes from inception.

If Google is serious about legitimately competing with iTunes, it really needs to make sure that the service is professional and consumer-friendly right from the start. No beta tags, no incremental upgrades, no confusing legal restrictions, no immediate patches--just a thoughtful user interface, plenty of hardware playback options, competitive pricing and value added features....

Most importantly, if any company has the ability to take on iTunes, it's Google....

I think this initiative by Google will be welcomed by the online music buffs. Google has good chances of eroding iTunes' popularity provided they come up with new offerings.

Thanks for your referral Puja,Yes GoOgle is going to give a stiff competition to Apple in smart phone and i-music segments. And i think it should do so because if GoOgle want the Apple's ground beneath itself then it has to introduce such applications through which Apple has captured the ground.

This is still speculation but my feeling is that Google application development is more intuitive and customer focused. Itunes in my opinion is a very demanding application in terms of system requirements and thus stands to loose in that respect.

i really dont think so,

cause the time google will take to get popular the meanwhile apple might be far more ahead of it ,,

cause already apple is a very tough challenge for Google as it is from last so many years and it has achieved its brand name and position,,in global market..

Its too early to comment om how google music will turn out to be...But itz gonna be very difficult to beat Apple.Apple has sent a benchmark which is going to be difficult to cross for others.Itz such big a brand that it doesnt even need India for its market...besides google search engine is only a hit,few years back google launched its browser google Chrome but that too failed to capture the imagination as ppl were more comfy using mozilla.Last heard google is also making its own operating system don't know when it will come out ..but it will be interesting to see how it is going to compete with the windows..

C'mon guys we don't know anything about this Google music how it works, whereas itunes are already a hit worldover, and have all the features which could possibly be there, and Google music has still yet to put its foot here, and still the deal is being pursued with the record labels, and then things will work out, but with so many android phones which will be supporting google phones will make apple and itunes to pull up their socks and surely itunes will not be affected, lets wait and see, still a long time to go, christmas is far away.
