Google Inc will not share the encryption keys of its email service with Indian security agencies as it would compromise the privacy rights of millions of Gmail users worldwide.  The Union home ministry, intelligence agencies and the telecom department are collectively exploring mandatory sharing of software by all communication service companies in India, a sensitive issue with global firms.  Already Indian Government is making sure that RIM shares all the details in this regard. So, what do you think people..should Google share encryption keys with India?

Yes they should...there should be no non-compliance and should be open to offering the Indian government access to encrypted Gmail communication in the event of a large-scale risk to human life and property. Indian authorities are seeking control over communication systems for internal security as intelligence agencies do not have the technical resources to intercept communication services and data transfers on the internet, especially when encryption levels exceed a certain threshold. So, there should be no problems in sharing the encryption keys for Google.

It’s a great effort by Google which is in the favor of its Users' privacy, but at the same time Google should also have Social Responsibility. It should take concrete steps towards verifying user’s identity by developing such a system which is foolproof. I agree that this task will be complex but may not be impossible. This may prevent any malicious activities conducted by the group called Terrorists who are spreading panic all over the world.

Google should definitely share the encryption keys with the authorized Indian security agencies. As Google operates globally, different countries have different laws and regulations depending on the country's economy, scientific development, risks and other factors. If Google needs to operate in all the countries at the global level, they need to meet the compliance rules and regulations of all the countries in which they operate.

Additionally, they are only sharing the keys with the authorized agencies. Hence, there should be no additional worry on this aspect. Failure to comply with the local country rules may also lead to further difficulties for Google....

Thanks for the referral, Dipti.....

Considering the reported use of various forms of net communication by nabbed terrorists, allowing encryption secrecy by Google (or any other public service provider) is silly. Is Google ready to accept all criminal and civil liability for future acts by criminals and terrorists? If they are not, then they should be told to either comply or quit...

It was Blackberry earlier, now its Google's term. These issues are clearly proving that India is slowly losing its sovereignty over nations due to petty political gains. GoI's stand off is not taken in the true spirit! Such countries and corporates should be banned for certain period. If they lose Indian masses, then their presence in the global market would become dismal!

yes Google should share its encryption and security code as far as to security concern. Telecom companies are also not wish to share design code of hardware and source of software. China is also protesting but government should strict to see its importance and market needs.
