The Trivandrum Golf Club, established in 1850’s by the late Maharajah Sreemolam Tirunal, the Maharajah of Travancore, the late king of erstwhile Travancore  is the second Oldest Golf Course in the world outside Great Britain.

The royal family of erstwhile Travancore had established this Golf Course even before the Americans and the Europeans took to the game.

The Golf Pavilion has been declared as a Heritage Building by the Archeology Department of Kerala on 17/08/2002 . The building of about 7000 sft is more than 100 years old and is noted for its traditional architecture and the elaborate engineering work that has gone into it. The Nine–hole Golf Course here is one of the smallest in the country, but one of the prettiest. The 25 – acre course has over 3400 trees belonging to over 1,000 species and is one of the green lungs of the City.

Kerala Government takes over the Trivandrum Golf Club

The century-old Trivandrum Golf Club, situated in the heart of the city, got a reprieve from closure last year. However,  this time, the Kerala Government means business and on one Friday evening 14/12/09,  it gave notice to the Club Members to vacate the premises in a month's time , which is being challenged in the High Court.

Do you justify this proposal of taking over by the Government?

Do you think that the Government will continue to run the Club and preserve its Heritage value as it was being done now?

As a Resident of Trivandrum and a proud inheritant of Culture, Heritage and History, I strongly protest about the attempt to take over a well- named Golf Course by the Government.

It is the Onus and responsibility of the Government to protect any and all Heritage or Grand Heritage sights, monuments or structures. It is the governments duty and responsibility to protect its grandeur, preserve its history and offer it to the world to visit and talk about it. It is a part of DESTINATION MARKETING process!!

I am not on this side to argue with you but if the government wishes to do something useful like what I think it can do... Please do not oppose it. In fact, get a corporate to sponsor the upkeep of the golf course and see what happens to the club!! You may even request the government to retain the oldest members or some understanding that would be a WIN WIN for all!!

Let the government do the job its responsible for!!

Vimal I agree with you. The government should not take over the golf club. If at all they take, they should maintain it properly. No buildings should be constructed over there since it is a heritage sporting of our country.

Thanks......

Doesnt the govt have better things to do ? What about providing good law & order, basic amennities, electricity & roads, and administration ? Managing a golf course should be left to those who know that business well

I do not agree at all with the Govt.decision.It just is because some govt "babu" took a fancy for the project and the attention by media. They have too many things in their hand. They are just taking because they have the power to do so and not out of any desire  that they are going to do something better.

Dear Makrand, thanks for participating in the debate. I appreciate your comment and expectations you have about the Kerala Govt.  A closer look at the way Kerala is governed will make you comment otherwise, I am sure. I must relate the current topic to one of the recent debate in toostep regarding the need for considering competencies for seleting Ministers for governance. A similar heritage Building (a Palace) taken over by the Government in one of the hottest tourists spots in the Capital City, is now seen in a dilapidated state which stands testimony to Government's capability in preserving its heritage.  A true standing evidence of efficiency!

The job of the Government is Governance, which unfortunately it cannot do. Taking over the club is an excuse for the 'babus' and their political masters to create an exclusive domain for themselves.

We the people must strongly oppose this kind of move.

I totally oppose the Government's move. In a country where the first individual Olympic Gold Medallist was not spared by red tapism, we can only pray and hope the 18th century heritage sporting facility does't turn into a concrete jungle.

Yes i'm totally disagree with the statement of government. I don't know anything about that golf club but being a non resident of the state i know that club belongs to old times reflects the culture and heritage.
