It is said that the Government these days is cosntantly integrating IT policies these days, from cyber courts to copyright issues now one can find most of the things in internet, with the popularity of Social networking sites like Facebook, twitter and orkut in India, more and more people active on these sites than anyplace else in internet,  And now, the Indian Government has decided to use Facebook, Twitter and other social media to reduce traffic accidents.

With its vast out reach social networking sites provide a ideal place for one to run any kind of awareness camp, whether it is regarding road fatalities or Drunk & driving campaigns, and with Government which readily wants reduce the no. of accidents that occurs are in a way hoping social media will come of a great help in this regard.

What do you think guys, will campaigns on social networking sites be of any help in that sense?

Absolutely i agree with Mr. Surya. This is a masterstroke by the government & the target is the youth. Considering that most of the accidents that take place or the cases of drunk driving involve the youth, the govt. has got it right this time by deciding to use Social Networking Sites to spread awareness. Communities can be created & live discussions can take place there in various threads. I think with the increase of use of internet in India SNS are becoming a very powerful tool for staging such awareness campaigns. And the fact that mostly the youth uses such sites makes it all the more attractive.

Than social networking sites i mean government should create awareness at the root level i mean at schools and colleges, than social networking, infact that will have a greater reach than anything else and also one can make sure that youngsters who are mostly involved in all the incidents as mentioned above to understand what it takes, there should be participation of traffic police and schools and colleges and make sure that youngsters understand why there are rules and regulations in place, and if harsh punishments are placed on offenders then easily one can reduce the incidents, though social networking is a great platform to create awareness but to see reduction in these incidents we need active participation of traffic police at the root level.

Good decision by the Government to use the Social Networkin Sites..

Recently in a report i read that 60% of the Internet traffic in India is on the social networking sites, so i believe that the government has taken a very good decision..

I think social networking has much better reach than anything else, and campaigns run on these have a greater impact as such people will discuss these things among their connections, and will create impact for sure and there is something called communities, where people can get together for real and even government in a way can organize these things real easily with communities and moderators getting into the action where users are made gathered around and will help in creating awareness in this regard.

Previously there used to be meetings social congregations where the people used to assemble and express their views in those platforms. Now with the advent of technology and more employment of the people such events have become the things of the yore, with individual's time becoming scarce commodity.

Now the Social working groups on the internet have filled that gap.Social networking is the most powerful informal communication system no doubt about it. Provided these communities reach the events the spread of the news or campaign is fast. Take the case of Too step. Most of the like minded people come together to express their wish in the internet: it gets converted in to need; need into the movement.

These movements may be raised as issues in the parliament. As a final result, and gets converted to laws in future. Who knows?

Like any thoughtful deeds based on scientific methods are useful this initiative if created with outcomes in mind will be useful. Thoughtless and unscientific actions can lead to foul outcomes or no outcomes desired. If the government designs their initiatives after studying similar practical applications on Internet or following expert methods and implementing this programe it will I feel produce some positive outccomes.

Thanks for the referal.

Of course, the government campaigns will augur well in the Social Networking sites.  The automobile sectors are facing fierce competition.  Therefore, their innovations are focussed on "SPEED" and 'POWER", which in a way triggers the passion of every youth of this country.  However, the road conditions in India are not suited for these machines.

The slogans and the Government Campaigns that run on Doordarshan Channels are generally ignored by our educated citizens.  Since more and more traffic is generated in the social networking sites, the Government should not lose sight of these sites to promote their campaigns.  If not 100%, some results will certainly be obtained!

Yes of course it will work because network of SNS's are growing very fast. Govt. can chose SNS as one of the way to create awareness programme.

I feel that in future SNS's are going to be one of the most important place to do business.

It may not work to a great extent. Because every person has the same CASUAL attitude of '' chalta hai'' in India on roads while driving. Its all in the mentality.

But i do also support because today Social networking sites is the best way to spread, share anything within a quick span of time.

I hope something more clear and transparent manner(CCTVs, sensors, etc) to reduce accidents/drunken driving. But do wish this campaign spreads awareness.

Base of the Social Net working sites are netisons, and they can start any movement and use this platform as they desire. They can find similar personalities and decide to do somthing to do good.  Not at some specific place or country, but any where in the world.  Members of social networking sites can play very vital role which is for happiness of mass anywhere.

In case of Govt.  nowadays in the scene of BOLT, BOT and PPP model and developed planning sense, provide their full supports to the situations, such as put up visible signs, provide proper lane, and lane mark, parking zone, etc. as well implement the safety rules compulsory such as Helmate, Belt, etc.  Awareness programme and training for drivers are increased.  Moreover the community we says drivers are more literate.

One of the character of literate is not to follow the rules, and smartness to short cut which cause in accident, not for them but the followers or travelling vehicles.  This can we prevent to make understand them if they are around us.

Government has to used Social Networking sites for their any programme, any messages considering the spreading area.

In short, I want to suggest, we can use this sites to prevent accidents better then the Government.

This is not a good idea, government could do many constructive jobs than wasting their time on social networking sites, as these sites are accessed accross the world most of the identities used are fake one. plus most of the drivers are illitrate who does not know english, so forget about accessing internet and getting educated over such sites, so overhere the governemt is only interested in educating the spoiled brats for not to drink and drive?

I think government should not waste tax payer's money on such bad initiatives,

Moreover the traffic accidents could be controlled effectively over the road by limiting the entry of new vehicles, removing old vehicles, controlling old vehicles, stopping corruptions in various agencies, applying stringent norms for heavy vehicles (i.e. Dumpers, Tourist bus, Tanker, heavy load trucks etc), improving Tests to obtain liecenses, increasing fines for offences etc
