A group of hackers called Anonymous has come to help all who are fighting against corruption. But their mode of doing this is quite different. They have supported the movement by hacking the website of government IT organization, National Informatics Centre (NIC).
NIC is a Government institution, for providing e- Governance projects and integrated services and global solutions in Government Sector.

The Hacker News reports that the hackers have posted a logo in the website along with a message to the Prime Minister. The message says " There is no use securing. There is no use of spending on forensic. Get this message clear Mr. Prime Minister and others."

Do you think this is a right move .. going and hacking a government site?

People have every right to rise against corruption and show no-confidence and non cooperation to the Government. But if we want to claim our fundamental rights at every point then we should also abide by our fundamental duties. Once a site is hacked or under security threat loses all it's genuineness to the viewers for a long time. Large number of promotion is needed to restore it's original form and repute. It's a big loss and this is compensated by public fund itself. We must not forget this. Net promotion is much more effective and impactful than hacking.

@Ardhendu: No matter what you launch over a network - viruses, trojans, adware, spyware, malware, logic bomb, etc - NO PHYSICAL DAMAGE IS DONE. In other words, hardware is not damaged.

I repeat: IF an organization consistently follows backup procedures, the data loss is not much.

Also, neither of us are IT Security specialists but we know about these things. Therefore, it stands to reason that ANY security specialist - even the least knowledgeable - should be able to take steps and institute procedures to make sure that their organization's data is safe.

I wanted to add another point here as some here (including IT professionals) seem to think that there is some physical damage to a website when it is hacked.

THERE IS NO PHYSICAL DAMAGE. Thus there is no "loss". If there is any loss or damage it is to the ego of the IT specialists in charge of network security

This is not like rioting in which we damage public and private property.

At the most, a site will be have to be taken offline and depending on the type of data which may be affected, the files on the affected servers will have to be examined for tracing the extent of data loss/damage and of course to see if they can determine the IP (Internet Protocol) address of the hacker.

If the organization has a consistent data backup procedure, there is not much loss to data.

REAL losses are of financial data such as credit card details, etc.

In these days, the CIO (Chief Information Officer) of any company depending on information technology - especially for financial transactions - has to hire Ethical Hackers to regularly test the organization's network security.

@Raju sir: No single act can obtain the freedom of a people from a corrupt and oppressive regime.

If that were so, Anna Hazare would have finished it in one stroke.

Rather, it is a series of coordinated or uncoordinated actions, when sustained by the majority of a people (a nation), that will force the regime to step down or change.

Raju sir, it is quite possible that some people appear misguided like Chandrasekhar Azad but every action like his added a bit of weight to the whole movement.

Otherwise, did one or two acts of Chandrasekhar Azad or Bhagat Singh obtain us our freedom and independence? Or did the single act of the Salt Satyagraha obtain us our independence? Or did the sacrifice of the martyrs of Jallianwalla Bagh obtain us our independence?

Which single act in the history of ANY nation of the world obtain independence of that nation?

Was Hitler defeated in a single battle?

Facts first:

There are two types of hacking: (a) Illegal Hacking and (b) Legal Hacking (a.k.a. Ethical Hacking).

The difference between the two is that Ethical Hackers are contracted officially by the organization that wants to test its network defenses.

ALL illegal hackers are considered malicious and thus are defined as criminals. This is the definition even though no actual theft of information (financial or other) takes place.

However, consider this situation: If we leave the door(s) of our house open and a thief comes in and steals things, what would others call us? FOOLS.

Hackers who do NOT steal information are actually a help. Why do I say this? This is because they have helped the organization that was hacked, by showing them that the people in charge of that organization's security have not done a good job.

I thank the hacker's group Anonymous because they have shown us our government's vulnerability.

If a group of hackers (working on their own time) can do this, what about hackers who are sponsored and trained by intelligence agencies?

We can be sure that no intelligence agent is going to deface a site to say that he/she has stolen information.

Intelligence agents would do their work calmly and silently. They do NOT want anyone to ever know that they broke through the defenses. It would be counter-productive. Intelligence agents would not announce that they are a group of hackers, etc.

The parting shot: Our corrupt government would never admit being hacked by genuine thieves like foreign intelligence agents.

Thus, we should be grateful the hacker's group "Anonymous" for showing us that our defenses are not strong.

It is a right move to show the way government works, that even their website is not secured. IF they cannot do much to get their website secured , how can you expect them to take step towards removing corruption. Its high time to make them realize about their responsibilities, after all only we people have chosen them.

I would like to say that persons with technological edge if could find out online transaction of corrupt people (like Julian Assange) would be a true help in fighting war against corruption. It is admitted fact even by swiss bank officials that in swiss bank Indians are the maximum account holder so is their contribution of money. Therefore a work to highlight this fact would go a long way in fighting battle against corruption and black money. However, I am not in support of defacing/ damaging sites of Govt. of India as that would amount to loss of hard earned money and efforts of millions of Indians and would in a way ease out work of our enemies who does not like India to be an economic power.

Mr. Isaac Madhavan

Being a software programmer we treat the software like websites similar to a physical object, may be equal as a car or building or a baby, so I must have messed up because this is the feeling which provokes and inspires us to work really hard for the object that we or anybody creates. (How emotional isn't it?)

You are also true in saying no physical damage but we actually live in 2 worlds one hardware and other software.

Mr. Isaac Madhavan

Can you kindly allow me to clear this general misconception about hacking that it does not physically damage the website.

The scope of hacking is not limited to the stealing of valuable and sophisticated sensitive information but the attack scope is vast and the Trojan Horse (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trojan_Horse) , Virus Injection (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_virus) and Logic Bomb (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logic_bomb ). Are indeed such kind of threats that the hacker uses just having single idea in mind that is to destroy and destruct. For more information on hackers please refer to (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hacker_(computer_security)) .

Hope that you will find these information useful, thank you for the opportunity to reveal the actual threat that hackers can do.

@Isaac, I totally agree with all your points.

But if you think deeply, all the activities you mentioned for the freedom struggle had one common purpose and they were explainable - get freedom and throw the british out. And each act was contributing directly or indirectly towards that goal.

I am not able to understand how this hacking is going to help.  The hackers did not even leave a message to the Prime Minister to act tough against corruption!!!!!!!!!!

It seems to me that they are simply using the corruption issue for their own benefit and protection.

Dont you agree?

I am amazed that there are whooping 26 toostep supporters of an anti national security or unpatriotic persons. Now let me be clear and understand that why must I respect anything against my national interest and security? Where is the accountability of these people who are ready to be home born cyber terrorists. This is India so you are spared because you do not have a SSN ID or Social Security Number like USA if you had one then you would have seen yourself behind the bars by this time. Come on and awaken the true patriotic feeling and which knows no threat on the national security concerned please. God Bless India

And how do they intend to achieve their objective of corruption-free society with this act?

When referring to owners of black money and how they(corrupt) got it, is a question on their integrity. In it's very essence it is the unethical practices of the corrupt that has brought about the furore. Hacking is unethical too, who will rein in the hackers when they go beserk under the guise of 'common good'? Such actions will only lead to anarchy. We are trying to improve our system - not degrade it, violate laws and usher in chaos. Like many others who don't support this idea, some people are happy to compromise our national security. I think we are capable of a far more civil and sophiticated approach to counter corruption. We shouldn't be proud of shooting ourselves in the foot!! (atleast the thought of it)

I think this is not the thing they need to do. People supports this bribe for a large extent. Everyone pay it for making everything simple. Why you cant file complaint ? There is already a system implemented like Vigilance and Anti corruption bureau, Apex Courts etc. Corruption is in us. Attacking sites will not be the safe way to fight against the corruption. This is so stupid

ITS A BIG NO.

HACKING A WEBSITE IS A CRIME AND MOREOVER HACKING A WEBSITE DOES NOT UPROOT THE RAMPANT CORRUPTION IN INDIA.  PM GAVE INTERVIEW MANY TIMES TO MEDIA PEOPLE AND ALL THOSE HAVE BEEN IN VAIN, THEN WHERE DOES THE SENSE LIE IN HACKING A WEBSITE?

I DO NOT THINK SO IT RESOLVES ANY ISSUES.

UNETHICAL ACT!

Our PM is very clearly said that everyone should get punishment if she/he made mistakes. Then the point of addressing to PM is not the correct. The so called ciminals like Ramdev Baba is kindling the anti corruption movement is the wrong way we are getting into. Anna is offcourse the right person to deal with, but so called multimillinaire who got all the money by means of donations is 100% corrupt. Let all the Godlymen like Baba Ramdev, Nithyanandha, Saibaba, Chandrasamy, Amithammal, Bangaru adikal, Sankaracharya and other christian and muslims who involved in these activities who used the innocent people for their own use, should be in the CBI custody and IT should deeply get into their accounts properly without any corruption, since they are first people to make Govt. officials to do corruption.  Next the Politicians are the most corrupted people with the help of business magnets.  Let the law should be strict for all the above teams.  Making a innocent people as armed force means, it is like moist activities, hence, these babas should be immediately put on jail. Let us wake up and give hands to the anticorruption movement taken by Anna and the Central Govt., not with such babas.

A terrible crime. It is an insult to the good work that some govt employee has done...after this act, the dishonest people can pat their backs and say "I knew honest govt employees spending their time doing the good work were wasting their time. Government has two parts. One the corrupt leaders and the other people who work for the nation and report to these corrupt leaders. When we hack the government site it is this working class people who will have to face the heat both from the Public and these Leaders. Same is the case when we go on damaging public property
