yes, India is a biggest railway giant but the systems are too old non of the systems are mordenised since BRITISH TIME very small part is mordenised as far as techonology is concerned .Presently MAMTA DI is busy with her state politics. As she feels that she may fullfill her dream of becoming CM. Hence everything elsein neglected.

People should stay away from VOTE BANK POLITICS Railways has been misused by bunch of jokers from past so many years, latest scam exposed in railway recruitement boards (RRB) bias selection is one of its great example where more qualified and deserving people are deprived of the job that are offered to illitrate and corrupt people Here people buy false certificates, jobs and offcourse big posts in railways so the end product is dangerous, WE ARE COMPROMISING ON OUR SECURITY As Railway claims its a public property, simillarly all the BABU's are public servants IF YOU PAY PEANUTS THEN YOU GET DONKEYS -- should be more appropriate here

How the Rlys being run in recent months : - Lack of "safety-security arrangements", eleven big accidents in last fifteen months - no investments since last one year or so for upgrading signaling system - not filling up vaccencies in Rly when most post vaccent are for safety-security - more and more trains being introduced with broken/ old/ repaired recks without arranging man-power - huge land/ assets of Rly being offered to Private players and thus 'de-nationalisation' of Rly in disguise - so many committees are formed to distribute Rly money to loyal people in the name of development of Rly image - a legacy deptt of Central Govt., the Rlys being 'mis-utilised' for promoting somebody as future CM of a state ( Rly is an Indian phenomena - not a state matter.. the state in question may gain all ill-fame for a single person in future days 2come )

The tragedy of India is that life has no value. With a billion plus population a loss of few lives makes no difference. This attitude permeates all through our government and the psyche of the general populace. Our leaders give lip service and make a big hue and cry and drama if there is a a catastrophe and lives are lost ; and once the dust settles quickly forget about the whole incident. The main interest is to be in power and amass wealth and influence. Otherwise we would have dedicated ministers for each of the portfolios. Instead they wear a number of hats and compromise on efficiency, competency and in the process safety becomes a victim.

Yes, Mamta Benerjee is more concerned with the West Bengal Assembly elections and she hardly taking any care in her ministry affairs. As soon as she get into this Ministry, the performance of the Railways is tumbling. Lalu Prasad is undoubtedly made a great presence at the ministry when compared to Mamta. Her performance is awful. Its nothing but mismanagement.

I will say yes, our government's management is not so good. So many accidents, always most of the trains are late, and food in trains....... Since Mamta came under role, she is just focusing for Bengal anr rest all the states are facing problem...

Disha, partly yes and partly no.The reason being that railway is the only government department which is well structured whether there is Mamta or no Mamta. But there is one thing crystal clear that in India blood is thinner than water. The safety consciousness at the highest level is minimal.Otherwise, safety alarm can be developed and installed in the trains where drivers could be alerted prior to passing the danger signals.

I am in agreement with you on this. As far as Mamata Banerjee is concerned she, as it appears, completely self centered and want to fulfil her dream to become chief minister of west bengal. It unfortunate for the railway travelling public and one has to stay with this problem. She doesent deserve to become Railway Minister and saying so she will obviously a misfit as a chief minister. She must understand she has no right to play with peoples life. I think till such time she is not the cm she should take some ministry where even if she is not there the work will go on like any Govt. office.

Yes, you are right. Safety has been compromised in railways now a days. Mamta, the Railway Minister doesn't have time to run this very important ministry. She has her own political and personal interest and works. Who cares. Railways go to duck, it hardly matters. Safety is being compromised. People are being killed, But it is passing the buck phenomenon. Everywhere at the Centre also. Key Man is also having blind eye and deaf ears. It is for their political interest only.We expect that the Key Man to take initiative and take care of this disastrous situation.

No doubt, we can say that ,"yes". News reads that the train was entering the platform at 60kms speed & the driver was cautioned to stop thro public address system. But , no reaction was seen. What to say now. Is it not that safety is compromised?

The Indian railway, the fourth largest network in the world behind the US, Russia and China, operates 11,000 passenger trains and carries 18 million passengers and 1.4 million tonnes of freight every day. Following the train accident in Gaisal [in 1999] a government-instituted inquiry committee reported that the signalling system along the tracks in the entire region was of an outdated type and should be replaced immediately to avert future disasters. Even a decade after modernisation, not much work has been carried out.
“The number of trains is increasing, but tracks are not being modernised or being maintained well. Maintenance of equipment and safety measures are being neglected.
Finally, India still lags behind other countries regarding anti-collision technologies, which are standard in the West. Further, following a spate of train accidents under the current ministerial position, a thorough departmental inquiry needs to find the root cause of the matter. It is always a matter of conjecture that anti-national elements may be involved, but the committe/department report needs to substantiate the root cause so that these events can be minimized in the future....

Its not just saftey..the whole railway has been compromised. It may be possible that accidents can happen any time any where disregard of who is the minister, however, few accidents are true example of ignorance & compromised bahaviour with railway safety.

As rightly said, Mamta is not very keen and capable of running Railway ministry. She is good for state affairs and not for Central ministry. Worlds largest rail infra is not so easy to manage. One has to be capable, knowledgable, visionary and willing to do attitude. Lalu Prasad has changed the way people look the railway today. But Mamta and her team is not taking it to next level. Manhohan Singh should give this job to right candidate. Senior officers should also be made accountable to for this kind of incidents.

To some extent YES. Our present Railway minister is playing political games in West Bengal. She is not attending to her job adequately. If she is so interested in Chief Minister's job in West Bengal she should quit her job as railway minister and focus on her desire full time. What she is doing is simply sending a message that she is not sincere and committed to both jobs!

You are right, Disha. It is totally mismanagement by railway dept., & UPA Govt. is really helpless on this issue as Ms. Mamta Banerjee don't want any other portfolio than Railway. It is the first condition of Mamtaji while giving support to UPA Govt. & it is also true that she is more interested in West Bengal than Railway Dept.& also it is concern with stability of UPA Govt. so they put their mouth shut on this important issue.

Its actually no because our railway system itself has not been modernised. Havent accidents happened before when ministers where very much sitting in Delhi ? But that doesnt condone the way Mamata has been handling the affairs of the railway in any case. The fact here is why do the accidents happen ? It is because the railways havent kept pace with technology. Even though safety aspects and modernising of equipment is in the hands of the minister who has to approve the budget in the first place, little has been done to utilise whatever resources has been comitted in the first place. States have allowed railway property to be misused over the years given its vital real estate value, habitation has been allowed to come up near railway lines only becuase it served as a crucial vote bank and rail manufacturing facilities are so heavily unionised that it is a wonder that they are still able to roll out coaches and the like. I would put the blame on the entire political sphere for the shoddy state of affairs and the little chance that Mamata had to shine in a sector which was utilised well by her predecessor has been lost.

Directly we can not blame government/politicians for such train accidents. It is not the politicians but we are working.Particularly in the recent train accident it was a clear cut mistake of the engine driver who had not only ignore the red light signals but at the same time not heard warning on loud speakers too.So we can not blame working systems for that. Disha please put your self in place of Mamta Banerjee, and think that what could you have done to avoid such accidents.I am appreciating your feelings towards innocent deaths of and injuries to fellow passengers.

Thanks for invite Disha, Agree with you to an extent only: Has railway safety been compromised? Yes But is mismanagement only here and because of present railway minister alone? NO. Name a single area of activity that involves Government and try locating a success story or if the actions carry a meaningful impact? The answer is None......but why? Reason: Total Sycophancy, Self before all else and Inflated EGOs, are the prevalent traits and are HALLMARK of most in POWER or around. And the mentioned traits are at 180degrees to any positive initiatives. No wonder therefore that LOGIC, REASON, NEED, PRIORITIES, PLANNING and Efficiency are all completely lost and missed. Neither is railways the only one nor is this happening only now. Right from appeasements at varied levels in governance and society most are not interested in knowing ground realties, going in-depth with analysis or correcting the situation and certainly the present is no exception.
