According me it is difficult for the average citizen to actually figure out how so much could go wrong with the BJP. There are those who would argue that electoral reverses are part of the changing vagaries of political life. However, it is absolutely clear that so far as the BJP is concerned, this is not a mere political defeat, or loss of seats.

There have been several news reports which show how the BJP has lost substantial vote share even in states considered to be BJP strongholds.

They have the target (to achieve the magical no ),but they failed to achieve that.

Do u think they missed direction this time to achieve the target??

They were like headless chicken. Means they had the target but they did not know the direction where to go, which was the best direction ??

The BJP manifesto was remarkable, in the sense of being a litany of omissions. There was not a single word on the public sector, or about steps to spur industrial development. There were exactly three words on the agricultural loan waiver: “waive agriculture loans”, with no further explanation.

They even went so far as to copy the Congress scheme on low-priced rice for the BPL sections of society. Above all, they announced that their own core issues namely the Ram temple, the abolition of Article 370, and the uniform civil code were on the back burner. Thus people were at a loss to know what really the BJP stood for.

I will say the main reason bjp lost was BJP never promoted young leaders. I know, they must have tried it but to the common people, they never tried. Where as congress sent everyone signals about Young leaders.. Rahul Gandhi, Sachin Pilot, Milind Deora are the best example.

On the rural front, Rahul Gandhi did a fantastic job by reaching out to the people.. in fact I feel, it helped Congress a lot to gain more votes. At the same BJP did nothing as sort and even if they did, they could not tell the people about it. So, it was Rahul Gandhi all over..

But BJP started well with promoting themselves online, in fact they were pretty early at it and they were doing good.

This shows they were in the right direction.

It was the best political party evolved  in India seeing the mess done by congress looking at the last sixty years and its monopolistic attitude. But only one person Rajnath Singh took it into oblivion....It cant revive as of yet but i hope may there be a new dawn of strong opposition...Seeing the present parties like Bsp India's political future seems to be in shacles....

Honestly it never had one right from its inception.

The only agenda they have is religious passion creation - both positive & negative, without having any agenda for Social or Economic or even Political facades of voters.

The majority of voters do have their religions and the preceptors for religions but what they look for in a political party is not religion but practical solutions for day-to-day life problems.

I remember, from my early childhood, I could not come to terms with BJP manifetoes & their principles. How long can one party be so religiously inclined? same issues, same religious mindset, and same bickering. It was bcoz of their hinduism portfolio that they lost, and secondly having senseless politcians on their forefront. Not many ppl in their party are well educated and not many can sustain a good communication dialogue. The biggest democratic country was going to get tired of the same senseless verbatim. And to top it all, every new face of BJP is scorning & frustrated. We cannot see a optimistic look in any of the oldies. They feel that being in opposition means only to oppose. Never ever they could generate support for any decision of the ruling party even if it was in common man's favour. It needed stoic stature & powerful mindset of Sonia Gandhi to combat, withstand & finally discard such foolish & selfish politicos out of the mainstream.

I my opinion BJP never had any direction, they even don't have any stability within their party nor they have any popular future face after Mr Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Slowly and gradually people of India are realizing that development should be or would be the key issue of the election rather than Religion, Caste or any other communal dividing forces. They also realise the power of single government instead of coliation government.

In Delhi people have voted keeping in view the coming Commonwealth games and the pace of development for the last five years. Its never an easy task for any of the party to get clean sweep. Congress though for the last 50 years have believed in stability and slow pace of development, this time the congress kept the stability as well fasten the development process this shows that they are leading to a common goal or mission.

However BJP and its allies are still beating the line, which make them form government in 1999. Still in search of direction.....

Its nice to know that the party honchos have started thinking their party as a brand and are into marketing it big time!

I agree with Himanshu! They were a bunch of headless chickens! I also saw some of their campaign TVC's and was not impressed because I could not decipher what they were telling me! I think its a classic case of too many cooks spoil the broth!

BJP has a vision and they want to succeed, but this was not the right time for them to rule the country. People understood that and Congress won.

certainly NO.it is not the direction that has been lost instead, it was the poll stategy that became invisible to common man especially in non-BJP ruled states that created a havoc.major damages was in UP,MP and in Orissa.particularly in Orissa, BJD was very much scared to go with BJP because of Kandhamal incidents and this tactics is sheer intelligence of Mr.Biju and party.BJP didn't have any solid agenda for this election and simply they started aiming strength of PM,which common man has nothing to do with it.there was no word called stability in any of NDA's agenda.raking up babri masjid issue also damaged a lot and list goes on.BJP as a party is still very strong and there are so many leaders who can take it once again to past glory.
