Indian medical tourism income is expected to reach upto Rs 8,000 Crore by 2012 on back of its low cost medical treatment and a vast pool of well-qualified medical professionals.

According to Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM), medical tourism's earnings may go upto Rs 8,000 Crore by 2012, i.e. almost double the present figures.

The Government recently announced that a total investment of $6.5 billion is in the pipeline for medical tourism industry in the country and the amount will also be used for setting up affordable hospitals and budget hotels for patients’ relatives in the country. This announcement highlights the increasing number of Indian private hospitals that are finding themselves mentioned in travel itineries and are sought out by more and more foreigners. If industry estimates are to be believed, the size of the medical tourism industry stands at Rs 1,200-1,500 crore (Rs 12-15 billion). The Indian healthcare market is Rs 15 billion and growing at over 30% every year.

It is encouraging that Indian health systems can help internationally asides earning. One factor that must be borne by all stake holders and adhered strictly, is, not to allow quacks take over and bring iniiative to disrepute. As also a regulated measured growth must be practiced rather than providing a chance to loot and scoot bringing disrepute to sincerity of cause.
