Recently in Bangalore a feasibility study is being undertaken by an international consultant on introduction of high speed trains in the country with the speed of above 250 km per hour would be completed in six months.  The feasibility study was being conducted on the sections of Mumbai-Ahmedabad, Delhi-Chandigarh and Bangalore-Hubli.

But the problem is, the project has to be taken up as a national project because it will not pay back in the initial stage, the cost of the project will be so high that it will not be commercially viable.  So, the problem would be one of funding, and the consultant was expected to find out some method. There are attempts being made to get funding by PPP (public-private-partnership) route. If funding is available, then only the project can be done.

With many issues and bottlenecks like these, will we see high speed trains in near future?

Yes High speed trains have to come soon in India, because business travel requirement is very high in India. I am sure this will be feasible in next 10 years with an additional track for these trains. Also we are well 45 years behind from the world as the Tokaido Shinkansen, connecting Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto and Osaka, was inaugurated in 1964 as the first shinkansen line and the world's first high speed train service. At that time the trains already ran at about 200 km/h. Nowadays they reach speeds of 300 km/h.

high speed trains would require high levels of technology  developments in terms of design, signals & safety. We need to have the required systems manpower & resources in place.

We have all the resources, manpower, technological support. And fund to impliment the high speed trains. people in metros want change. Because of heavy traffic, small roads in most of the areas, all these things really bothering  the common man.

If high speed trains are provided, most of the traffic conjetion could be solved. No need lay the train fecilities to all the areas. It should be planned in such a way it should cover all the major ares, from there providing public transport(busses) to sub localities.

every thing is possible only thing is that govt is not putting its max efforts for the implimentation. contractors are not really considering the technical aspects carefully. this attitude need to be changed.

High Speed Trains are a need of the times.

It is indeed disheartening to see how we usually reason out things here in India.

India is the seventh largest country in land area; the second most populous country and the largest democracy and it is very evident that the infrastructure is very inadequate to cater to the needs of the present let alone the future. It is really pathetic if we think that a country which has its own sophisticated space program, moon mission and nuclear program and is home to one of the largest scientific manpower in the world cannot develop cost effective transportation technologies to suit our needs and aspirations.  

Here are certain compelling reasons to go in for high speed trains:

1) Explosion in inter city travel

Rapid urbanization of the country has triggered an increase in travel between the Metroes and other growing 2nd and 3rd tier cities. This traffic by road, rail and air has grown significantly in the recent years.

2) BPO/IT/ITES boom

Not just in the metroes but also in other small cities.

3) Money value of time on the rise

4) Need for an eco friendly, long distance, mass rapid transit mode

Both road and air travel is costs a lot on the environment when analysed in the perspective of transit capacity vs energy spent. It is well established that rail based tavel is the most efficient form of surface transport.

It is predicted that India will have a middle class of about 583 million, with per capita disposable incomes by 2025. This middle class will defenitely prefer air travel to train travel for inter city journeys. Such a massive shift of preference will be disastrous to the environment. So it is in the best interests of the country and the environment that train travel becomes a fast,comfortable and easy mode of travel. 

Increasing the speed to the level of 350-400 kmph itself can give stiff competition to airlines as the additional time required to commute to the airport, the check -in and security clearence times and the time required at the destination for baggage claim and further time reqiured for the commute will in effect make the effective total time comparable, if the trains are non stop between the metroes.

For eg. Consider that you are flying from Bangalore to Mumbai. The commute from anywhere in the city to Devanahalli Airport which is more than 30 kms away takes min 1 hr in daytime. You have to be there about an hr in advance. The flight time is about 1 hr(air distance of about 835kms). The check out & bagage claim at Mumbai takes about 1/2 hr+1/2 hr commute to city. So that makes a total of about 4hrs. 

The present train travel time is about 22 hrs with an average speed of 60 kmph for the rail distance of about 1307 kms which means that you'll spend almost one day travelling. Now suppose the train speed is increased to an average of 300 kmph non stop. That makes it a travel time of about 4.35 hrs + the time required for commute to and from the cities say 1 1/2 hrs. So the total time works out to be 4.35+1.5=5.85 say 6hrs.

An upgradation to 300 kmph is possible by better aerodynamics, better engine, stronger & safer tracks, fool proof signalling and fewer at grade crossings between roads and slow speed rails. The TGV of France is an example of this.

Main problem for introducing these Trains was our social conditions. There should be no chances of coming public on to the tracks. Any small miscreant activity can cause disaster and damage is vulnerable. In India we don't have technology problem. The problem is implementing the standards in reality under the extreme corrupt practices. Under these conditions I feel it is far away to wish a high speed train in india.

High speed trains are not feasible for India since the existing infrastructure for the Railway system is only outdated. We are atleast 20 years behing in terms of our technology adoption in Rail Systems which needs to rectified or upgraded first then we can look at newer technologies. The concept of open toilets systems of draining the waste all over the tracks should be taken off first which causes immense environmental damage. Though we do have some systems like eticketing we are still far behind world standards to look for high speed trains

i would definately agree with wat mr. ashish bhartia has expressed ,keeping in view the present condition of indian railway this isn't looks like any brighter idea but there are exceptions such as delhi metro which has emerged as huge success story.but considering present level of stir created by recent accidents have raised many eyebrows over longevity of such major construction project.wat we need is miracle at grassroot level hence to make "bullet train " like revolution  a reality in indian transport.until then we must prioritise ameliorating the quality we are delivering in existing railway set up.the shabby railway stations n even worst quality of service in various trains,as mentioned by mr .ashish lax system of ticketing there lies huge scope for improvement in prevailing system the upgradation can be dealt with later.

high speed train wat abt d current trains a look:

the train which is scheduled to depart 2day has not yet arrived so its 10 hrs late we r sorry for the inconvenience.

ticket for 2 month later first day of booking open within half n hrs waiting n half of train will den book in tatkal quota charging extra money .

brokers,agents are the real ticket issuer on behalf of indian railways in front of station dey have so called black ticket market thnx to indian railways .

food inside train horrible tea where is d milk only hot water added with sugar.

rats,mosquitoes ur companion while journey also found in ac coaches.

bedsheet,pillow u can smell n find out which guttar is nereby when somebody is washing.

toilet pls donot ask abt dat one word pls enter at ur own risk.

platform no space to sit or sum time breathe properly.

vacation timing better plan it before ur leave are sanctioned otherwise u have 2 enjoy ur vacation in d work city itself.

sumtime train collides wid other train recent goa express with mewar ,some times it derail,sumtime some cattles cums in between d track rem rajdhani accident due to this,

sumtime 3000 maoist capture d train thnx to indian railways tight security.

u cant sleep in d train at night dont know wen u wake up ur luggage will be there or not.

n lastly with such a huge network how can u ensure no cattle will come on track will u raise sum inflated structure along d tracks it will be a costly affair n thnx to indian robber dey will at night cut the wire n will sell it def who is goin to stop dem.

dese issue r some of issues which i have highlighted if basics r not strong imagine high speed train.

Indian Government right now is looking to hike house tax, water tax, other taxes & more over electricity Board & other front are privatised to generate absolute revenue without any expenses just to pay its debts or interest on its debts. Even penalty for non usage of helmets is planned to raised upto Rs 1000/-. State government borrow fund just to pay pension & salaries Ministry is recklessly looking for privatising its departments which it find cannot to be managed.

In this situation Investing in high speed train is a dream

More over the current slowly running trains meet with accidents because of poor maintance & lack of Technical & Infra-Structural development.

We can think about these new train to run in india only when there is revoltionary changes in the Administrating & Operating bodies of Railways.

i am  totally agree with isha coz high speed trains in india atlest not in nxt 50 yrs coz conditions are totally opposite in comparison to japan or germeny  whrer the high speed tarins are in services frstly...need speciall infrastructure, seprate n safe place for lay down the high spped tarin tracks coz in rural areas train tracks are used as toilet, abd the biggest problem is the politicals parties they always stop the trians for unlegal small benifits.

High Speed trains in India is really difficult to see in near future.
It requires lot of infrastructure , technology, new rail roads, new tracks. It almost requires to build Railways in the new arena.
Any mode of transportation brought must be available to all class of people. Railways are aggressively used by people lie under the Above poverty line, middle class, upper middle class.Except Business class.
New technology should reach villages.

The current conditions of our country is not supportive of high speed trains. Every alternate day, we get proves of indiscipline in railways. Our current infrastructure is not as par international standards yet. Like our machinery, our soils, our tracks needs to be able to withstand the speed of 300kmph. Also, as said, in this project, cost of this project will be so high that it will not be commercially viable. So, the problem would be one of funding, and the consultant was expected to find out some method. There are attempts being made to get funding by PPP (public-private-partnership) route. If funding is available, then only the project can be done. which I don't see in next 10-20 years. So, it is nice to have high speed trains in India. But I don't think it will start very soon.

It will be good to have high speed trains in India but dont see it happening in atleast the next 30 years during which time we should be improving what we already have. Maybe we should start with getting our city roads and highways to international standards before we take on something so huge.

Safety for the people is not ensured

soil should withstand the force and weight at 300kmph

 it must be affordable and not costly

atlast  space to build the tracks in the city

how many years it will take to build the tracks for trains?

I don't see High speed trains happening anytime soon in the country for atleast a decade from now, may be after that with lesser regulations in the country will help more funding and foreign investment and this will help India get High speed trains in the future.  And ours is a big country and we need to travel faster but then it has to pay back, which is not the case at the moment. For high speed trains to run, there is need for dedicated tracks, and one cannot have level-crossing, and there should be grade separator, with current complications in Indian railways and very less allocation of budget it is highly impossible that we will see high speed trains in near future.
