Dikshit ji the choices given by you are difficult. As an engineer I will always look into both of them...and I doing it. To economise the road construction interms of cost, time and aggregate consumption a composite type of pavement crust has already come out of laboratory and actual field tests conducted. Very soon we are going to see projects made by composite pavements. That gives you both economy and better load taking capacity i.e. a better structure. But when it comes to durabilty additives have got role.

But while using we need to be very careful. Two reasons for that. First is that many a times the proposed additive does not go through proper tests and trials before commercial launch. Even if it is imported it should undergo sufficient trials in Indian conditions. Not only this the findings of these trials must have at least some imperical relationship with certain indicative properties of the material. Secondly many a times unsuccessful material in other countries are pumped in  India. Thus the a salesman should not be beleived untill and unless he proves to be otherwise (i.e. genuine).

I suggest this is the right time to discuss on this issue, because India is concerned in the development of highways and many project are in process. I also agree with Mr.Dikshit in the change of present cross section of pavement to additive. Since  it is cheap and cost-effective it is better to adopt this method for laying roads. The government should take necessary steps to implement this method in the up coming projects.

Definetely there is a need for much wider ones.. because of the traffic(vehicle) boom on present roads.

But there are guidelines setup by IRC , NHAI. I thing there needs to be a collabaration with AASHO in terms of design aspects.

I mean at present x-section which road engineers are using is more or less is an arch. There is a scope of modification in it.

As far as additive is concerned no appropriate additive has been recommended so far so far by any body. There is a scope of cheap/ cost-effective additive. Institutions or Industries must come forward for real work on this issue. On which the specification of CRMB was furmulated is my work and samples were laid on the then Delhi-Nitipass State Highway, now NH-58, near Manglore town. The reality of it I know very well. There bmust be some real/ true work in this field.

CHANGING THE CROSS SECTION OF PAVEMENT WILL BE BETTER ,CONSIDERING THE HEAVY TRAFFIC AND LOADING.

IN COMMON ADDITIVES MUST BE TESTED IN LABS AND THEN RESULTS BE SEEN PRACTICALLY ALSO.

I am afraid that saying present road cross section is an arch will not stand, since as per the construction procedure  required  camber or cross fall  is achieved  gradually starting with a  flat surface for embankment. This gives no scope for arch formation and related actions. Present flat roads providing good manoeuvrability  to vehicles at different speeds may not require improvement in shape  and our structural pavement  designs are doing well.

Several bitumen additives,   Organic and Inorganic  as well as common and uncommon materials had been tried. They are broadly classified as Elastomers, Polymers, Fibres, Chemicals, Antioxidants, Natural Asphalts and Fillers. Each one had different  effect in improving bitumen properties of  Deformation, Cracking, Resistance to moisture  and ageing. Crumb tyre rubber comes under the category of elastomers and has improved  almost all of these factors besides being economical and showing a way disposal of waste tyres. which became aglobal concern.

Hence CRMB gained popularity.

Regarding functioning of bitumens, unfortunately all our mix designs are empirical and mechanistic analysis  is since gaining momentum now.  In near future the designs may become more sophisticated and accurate
