In a recent news it is said that your electrical appliances at home can soon be controlled by an SMS, its a new device developed by the students at Zakir Hussain College of Engineering and Technology in Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh.

The device, which has been developed by Abdullah Azhar and Kamal Gupta, who are both in their final year B.Tech students of Department of Electronics, will enable users to operate electrical appliances at their home from anywhere in the world at any time at a very low cost.

According to them, existing technologies for home automation require internet, Bluetooth or wi-fi systems, which are a bit expensive. The device recently has also won the second prize at the international exhibition of 'Electrical and Industrial Electronics' held in Mumbai recently.  So, what do you think people will this kind of technology be really successfull? Do share your views on this.

I think the basic idea behind this innovation is to manage your time

Let us take 2-3 examples :

1. Consider a case where you are coming from office to home and after reaching home in just next few minutes you have to leave for a party,
you are running out of time so you want that after reaching home you get the warm water, here this innovation will work, you can start your geyser before actually reaching home.

Same kind of case let's say you can start you Washing Machine and when you reach home you just have to take your clothes out and don't wait for machine to finish it's work

2. Take a case where you are outside house and can not attend your favourite TV serial, the only thing you need to do is to send an sms and setbox will get switch on and start recording the same.

3. You can start your room heater/Ac before reaching ur house...make the environment soothing before actually reaching there.

Uses look simple but these simple things make our whole day...and I think innovation can work good when you can provide something which can help in their daily work

Though this is a good idea from the students I mean I really find it hard to see it being used by many people, I mean how many of us will send and SMS to switch on your microwave in your home, and why do you want to that when you are not at home at all, it may reduce the time like just before coming to your home you may have things readied for you, but then there are things that needs to be done manually like putting required things in your home appliances to work... may be others who have better knowledge of this & also share light on home automation.......

Great Idea !! hats off to all the students working on this ,

Home automatioin and its usefulness is someting like the beginning of the telephone .How can or How will you talk to a person whom you are not able to see ?? Communication between people will be very much distrubed !! IT will incite bad manners and rudeness !! How will you confirm the perosn talking to you is the one you know ?? ( security issues ) etc....

These were some of the questions raised at that time and were genuine .Same is bieng asked about the seamless interaction of man and devices .All that is needed is students like these to continue thier work and amaze the world with thier tech or devices .These issues will fade away automatically ,

First of all Good thought...and congrats to them who developed this idea.Though only few things can be controlled by this yet i want to say here something is better than nothing.

Home automation is definitely the way we will be living with our appliances in the future. the only reason this has not picked up in India is because of the expensive nature of the devices.  Once cheaper (read 'affordable') technologies like the sms service become available am sure more of us would like to try it out.

Considering the Indian love for technology - am sure we all will want to try it out and adopt it in out lives too

I appreciate the efforts put by students.....But this one is not practically viable. For Home Automation, technology like ZigBee will reinvent the way we live today......It will bring awesome comfort in our lives without affecting our pockets.......

ZigBee

ZigBee protocols are intended for use in embedded applications requiring low data rates and low power consumption. ZigBee's current focus is to define a general-purpose, inexpensive, self-organizing mesh network that can be used for industrial control, embedded sensing, medical data collection, smoke and intruder warning, building automation, home automation, etc. The resulting network will use very small amounts of power — individual devices must have a battery life of at least two years to pass ZigBee certification.

Typical application areas includes

  • Home Entertainment and Control — Smart lighting, advanced temperature control, safety and security, movies and music
  • Home Awareness — Water sensors, power sensors, energy monitoring, smoke and fire detectors, smart appliances and access sensors
  • Mobile Services — m-payment, m-monitoring and control, m-security and access control, m-healthcare and tele-assist
  • Commercial Building — Energy monitoring, HVAC, lighting, access control
  • Industrial Plant — Process control, asset management, environmental management, energy management, industrial device control

Suggestion is good but implementation of this is not feasible. For an academic project, It can be a good option but for real time electronics it is not good. Most appropriate reason is,  this implementation increase price of equipment will be  too high. Sensor will use in this will have to implemented with mobile network or high level Bluetooth. Currently our electronics goods control by chip set or processors. Migration form chip control to network control is still a challange for techies.

Though the science has shown its contribution in many ways, it cannot do things when we are away(not artificial intelligence).Students have come with a very Innovative idea which needs to be appreciated:) but the technology should not be used to waste resource, when we are already near the house what's their in walking another two steps and doing our own work? technology should be used to reduce the Work load and save time instead not to become lazy!! already we have wasted lots of resources lets use technology to save it at least from now:)

As far as the technology goes, it is very interesting and could lead to many newer ideas later on which might actually be wanted to be implemented. In today's scenario, when I do not even know the time I am going to be reaching home, (thanks t the traffic jams, etc) it does not make sense for me to keep the microwave on. Yes, could be good if the lights in the house could be switched on (could keep thieves away, if you are not at home:)) and such other applications.

A good start that might have a great future......

AGREE WITH YOU SONAL

INNOVATION IS GOOD...UTILIZATION AND NECESSITY FACTOR SHOULD BE EVOLVE BEFORE IMPLEMENTATION OF INNOVATION.

With the Blackberry, you get to keep in touch with you business mail on the go. That itself is sufficient for me. Now I am not the type who would use sms to do all this. Mails is sufficient to engross me and I have virtually stopped smsing!!

Thanks for the referral Sonal :)
