Salary hike is directly proportional to the performance of the candidate. A better salary hike is the best form of reward and recognition that an employee receives...

RECOGNITION is the best form of motivation, as by instinct, any employee would prefer that his/her bosses must give him/her due recognition, treat him/her over and above others, and he/she be treated as an important part of the system.

REWARD is the 2nd best form of motivation that encourages an employee to be more innovative to serve the organization in still a better way in expectation of more rewards.

These two kinds of motivation are considered by any employee, as ex-gratia and over and above his/her genuine dues, which he/she is getting as a matter of routine.

On the other hand, SALARY HIKE is considered as a matter of right by an employee that may or may not have even one time effect on his mental perceptions for improvement in his/her performance.

Better Salary hike is obviously the motivation factor. Many people get reward and recognitions in there first company but the need for more salary is always the reason they want to switch to a new company .They might not be getting proper salary hikes in their first conpany

Salary hike is also one of the mode of recognition. If an employee has got the opportunity cost, it will be a best motivation. Obviously, everyone working for that money. Without that even if he got other rewards and recognition, it will motivate them up to a certain level only.

An employee can be motivated both intrinsically and extrinsically. Intrinsic motivation gives him a sense of joy and fulfillment within, whereas extrinsic motivation helps him grow financially, gains affordability to buy certain items of his choice, develop his external outlook and allows him to negotiate better in future employment!

Salary hike is crucial as it is the monetary motivation that keeps people and processes on a mobile mode. However, I do believe that rewards and recognitions (in proper frame of time and space) has an equal role to play in terms of keeping minds and hearts at work. Maslow's law of hierarchy says it all.

Why would anyone go to work?  For money, lively hood, create a career, we need money it has to be generated. To work for an organization and excel, few things are needed employee own interest and passion for his work or output. To be able to function properly employee needs to have adequate training, infrastructure to execute his / her duties if more than one doing the same kind of job cohesion among workers is needed; they should jell well, or peer appreciation will be lost, so when forming a team the mind set grooming previous exposure, ability to learn, mentor get along etc has to be taken into count. People who do well money and recognition follow them. Performance is within one’s own self, motivation comes from one’s ability his / her passion, needs prevailing situation options and choice. Money creates greed, recognition is better like motivation, its intangible it increase your aura so the money that one takes home become justifiable.

rewarding to employees is always have a different trends in now days neither salary, nor certificate motivate the employee.... employee is motivated only by the value(differs to different employees) he/she get from the organization and then only give full performance when he/she feels that he/she really matters for the organization.. Here Value can be Respect,Salary,Bonus,Reward or just a piece of paper..i am with hike in salary,respect...So who motivates me???yes money and respect from the org... just like that it differs to different peoples.

though money plays a important role , it is not money makes everything. only the work motivations can make a man more powerfull in his work.Eg. if u show importance for money at that time if a fall occurs in ur company do u think ur staff work for u, they go for a better company, isn't it sir

Salary & Financial Stability does play a significant role but for any human being, its his Self-respect & Dignity which results in Satisfaction... By Rewarding & recognising one's efforts, person feels dignified & gets motivated..

We must understand here that motivation is not mathematics and employees are not numbers. Each employee is a human being and humans have emotions attached to them.

Someone from a poor or modest family background would be motivated by money initially but as his liabilities get over, money does not contribute to motivation any longer.

The defence forces of any country would be the single largest manforce employers anywhere and i dont think money is used as a motivation there.

If you give any individual an option of picking between Bharat Ratna/Ashok Chakra against a bag 100 crore of Rs , not many would pickup the bag..

How much ever salary you give, the employee can be momentarily satisfied;else a manager should always be more motivated than a peon or a clerk. it is the recognition of the employee which can give the Org. more mileage.

Motivation is the catalyst that spurns employees' eagerness to work without pressure. If you doubt there is motivation, read "I have a dream", the public speech by Martin Luther King, Jr., when he talked of his ambition for an America where blacks and whites, the poor and the rich, the educated and uneducated, the youths and the old and others would co-exist harmoniously and peacefully as equals on August 28, 1963 from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial (Lucas and Medhurst, 1999). Managers who have been able to motivate their employees successfully realised how easy it is to achieve tasks with motivated employees.

Salary,no doubt, is primary. That is  for physical sustenance. One deserves appreciation and encouragement  for the nice work. It shall certainly motivate.(It goes without saying that rewards are meaningful only when there is some provision for punishments  for the inefficient and bad performance.)

I think we all understand Herzberg and his motivators. suffice to say that the hygiene factors (read money) are the bases for good health (read: sustainance) but good health is not enough the motivators(read recognition rewards) give the extra boost that energy the drive to keep at it with joy

Motivation is not unique to all. It depends on individuals. Maslow's Need Hierarchy Theory tells us that basic, low-level needs viz., physiological requirements and safety must be satisfied before higher-level needs viz., self-fulfillment are pursued. When a need is mostly satisfied it no longer motivates and the next higher need takes its place. Manager has to understand the personality of the individual first. Some times a pat on the back is enough, at times a monetary benefit fits the need, sometimes a commendation in writing works well. So, it depends on the situation.

May I add something more to

the above mentioned reasons.

It is my experience that giving out controlled delegation

and empowerment to the employees to the upper limits as

defined in their suitably made Key Responsibity Areas and

known individual capabilities,  is the best way to motivate

employees.

Rewards, recognistion and Salary hike will automatically

follow as they start to perform with a feeling of

responsibility and contentment of self acheivement.

I would request the managers to try this.

People's needs keep on changing, when their one need get fulfilled, he/she look for other needs... at some poriod of time Better Salary hike keep employee motivated but as soon as employee's needs get fulfilled he/she don't look for money they start looking for Rewards & Recognition... after getting love/belonging an human being star looking for self esteem then self actualization... when people start looking for self esteem then Recognition, attntion, social status, accomplishment, self respect etc become motivator factor for him/her .. not money/salary... hence motivation factor depends on the need stage of the emplyee ..
