Indian is hosting world cup hockey. However the stadiums are empty, If it was cricket then it would have been full. Should Govt improve and initiate hockey by taxing cricket.

Hi Cyril, amazing debate.

I agree with what you said. It is one of the best ways by which we can improve the interest of people on hockey. Hockey being our national game is not popular as that of cricket. So the government should collect some funds through taxing on cricket. They should use it to build international stadium and motivate students to participate in the tournaments. This will help to create interest in the coming generation.

Just by levying tax on cricket will not help much (though you may say that can be used for development of the hockey game) but the problem is much deeper and wider. Since 1980's when India won the world cup, our attention was on cricket. The media gives a big coverage to cricket whereas hockey coverage is very less. Moreover, if you see the compensation levels of both the games, the difference is huge. We have plenty of talent available with us, only thing required is to motivate the young talent by showing good performance from the players and also by the hockey federation.

I agree with you, However is it necessary not to tax free cricket matches.

When there is no tax on the cricket matches played, however the same benfit does not go to the customer / game follower. This is taken by the board.

Dear Cyril,

Thanks for this debate. Last few days i have been searching about Indian Hockey and its players and news about the World cup, i was shocked that hardly anything is available, this is like a shame for a country like India which is growing at 8% and the national sport has no funds..

The government is hardly doing anything for the national sport, cricket is so famous but hockey is our national sport and had a rich history as compared with cicket. I agree to the idea put accross by you.

Also, there is no group about Hockey on FB or Orkut and every IPL has groups, i with my students have started a small way to promote Hockey by making a group on Hockey on FB, will request to join the group. Please click the URL:

Govt should start hockey tournament at school and state level which will develop interest in the kids who will inturn takeup in the future.

funding at hokey is very low compared to cricket. Government should tax cricket matches and use this amount to promote hockey.

First off all ,lets focus on the Quality of Hockey played in our country ,its not upto international standards .You take Australia , Spain ,England etc  for the past 2-3 years are doing  very well. How they are able to do so. Its mainly becoz of the infrastructural facilities & efficient management  shown by their respect Hockey Boards . When other team practice on synthetic Astrotruf Field ,where does our players groom?Infrastructure?

There was one instance  when  our team was on ground , the federation president (KPS Gill) was happily sleeping for the first hour when the team was sweating it out on the field. And a few days later he picks the squad for the next match  along with the coach. Does this help our players ???

None of the coaches at the district or state level have any clue about synthetic surfaces and the players are coming up  with a faulty technique. There also prevails regional discrimination in the selection selection of players.Does this improve our Hockey??? Management?

Secondly coming to cricket , Will leavying tax on cricket  really help our hockey .It may be like doing a Heart Operation in the Kidney . So lets focus on generating more funds  for Hockey from our Budgets , and utlise  it resoucrefully , setup a efficient management , increase infrastructral facilities , increase coaching standards  etc. If we do all these the people will take more interest in hockey naturally .

And I don't feel the grounds are not empty while india is playing any major tournament of any sport  in india , as we always love to  Cheer for our country on the Field .

I do not believe that collections by way of taxing cricket would be ideal. There has to be something more than that!1

Cricket as a game has the ability to awe viewers!! There is a whole patriotic feeling that goes in the end result of the game. Though the time format of cricket is varied in terms of test, one day and 20-20, there is a sense of WINNING against a country that brings pride to the nation. All of this said, Hockey also has all these ingredients but there is no Godfather to the game. Meaning, there is not a single corporate who has adopted the game is actively promoting it. The corporates do not sign on hockey players as brand ambassadors to make them larger than life or even actively showcase the same on air. Hockey needs a big shot in the arm, it needs strategising. And thats strategy means involvement from the junta, the aam aadmi, the mango people.

Also, the gratification value needs to be increased in terms of prize money, players remuneration and visible on ground facilities that would awe the people to take interest and get into the game. I feel it has to do with a brilliant strategy and nothing else!!

Chak De tried its best to give a shot in the arm for womens hockey, but it really did not take off. People need a dose to wake up and that can happen througha 360 strategy!! Thats my opinion! Thanks for the referral, and an interesting debate indeed :)
