Definitely needed as we are not robots. Any human being will need a break be it a job, food that you eat, activities that you have etc. You need a break once in a while from everything. Besides a break helps you recoup and refresh so that you are better tuned to face the task on hand.

Dear Kiran, It is needed everyday. However, it should be do you like what you are doing now? if the answer is no for a some time, it is time to think. However, many times you may not have much choices. You need to wait. As Prof. Randy Pauch ( The last lecture) you need to wait for acceptance.

Monotony leads to boredom. In order to infuse new energy and creativity in our daily work, we need to focus on innovative techniques to ensure that activities lead to generation of new ideas. In order to do this, we need to take a break at periodic intervals so that the intrinsic motivation gets re-kindled as compared to our extrinsic motivation which may force us to work without a break. This is also considered as "Slack" or buffer. This incidentally helps the individual to perform even better in the long run without getting burnt out. However, what one defines as a break may be monotony for another. Hence, monotony should be viewed in the proper context. Google has the policy of allocation of one day in the week dedicated for doing what one is fully interested or passionate in doing (20% of the working week) based on one's predilections... Atlassian has one day dedicated in a quarter called the Fedex Day where you can do whatever you are passionately interested to do and produce a deliverable at the end of the day. Apart from this type of technique, an individual can also take a break (as per one's definition !) at periodic intervals which can help to recharge one's energies..... Thanks for the referrals, Kiran and Natteraja...

Kiran there is a good old saying "welcome break" I think that is required for better productivity. As far as routine is concerned it will help in providing quality outcome. So the break is required.

A break is very much needed and the work force is required to take atleast a fortnight leave in american and european nations compulsorily to make them come back refreshed. One more thing if any one is regular in coming to work without taking leaves then he is upto some mischief.

A break is always needed to support the mind and eyes muscles to function well. Monotonus jobs create stress on mind and can cuase even heart break. To reduce the stress level, a break is needed.

A break is very much necessary. Also, just consider this scenario :- With the raising cost of living and more competition, in the near future I think people in the middle class, both husband and wife, may have to work even two jobs in order to just keep the fire burning at home. During that time holiday break would be most sought after period in the year... more than Deepawali or Holi or Christmas or any other festival.

If you love your job, monotony never haunt you. If you are feeling monotony, it is better to leave the job, a break can not get you back.

Break which is designed will help innovation and the break which is availed during working period helps maintain the energy level. Both are essential, former with family to ease their pent up grievances and to come out of guilty consciousness and the later one to discharge one's duty intelligently, diligently at work place.
