Its surely not safe as we have seen gaints like infosys coming up with policies to safeguard their confidential info about projects lost because of their employees discussing about projects on social networking sites and its the same problem for many other organizations.

Everyone knows the biggest thing on the Internet these days is social networking. Businesses and individuals use Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, Digg and Delicious just to name a few to build and maintain relationships. The question is, with whom? Friends, colleagues and customers? Or criminals?

I'm afraid, Shivangi, but you've posed such a banal, bald question which is more appropriate for Yahoo Questions than this forum. You sound more like a grad student who is looking for a quick 'pros & cons: Social networking' material for her home work / assignment / term paper. Because, firstly, I'd ask, "safe for what?". I know most people operate on a set of assumptions - but, as they say about "assume": it makes an "ass" of "u" & "me" - so I ask. e.g. Is it safe for me to meet personally, someone whom I met only via social networking sites? Or Are social networking sites carriers of malware and hence, unsafe for my computer? So... think, before you ask. Please.

I think nothing is completely safe over the internet at its own. We make the things safe and unsafe. All the social networking sites have enough features to keep the information safe. People can set the privacy level as per their demand. These sites never leak the information without the permission of the individual. We just need to understand what information is necessary to be kept private.

If it is not safe what are we all doing here? All people here writing in favour or against are registered on this site and are regularly using it, reaping the benefits of knowledge sharing. Where else will you find such collection of ideas on any platform in real life. Even virtually but we do respect each others opinions, and we do connect with each other. Even the people who are opposing the idea of social networking are already vetting for its benefits by getting into the discussion and being part of it.

Everything is in this virtual world is insecure.. But it is upon us that how we use it.. Some people knew how to handle this and some people don't.. There are some privacy settings in every social sites to protect our personal and confidential information.. Just go through the settings and try all the setups.. So be careful about this and don't disclose any thing in this virtual world.. This world is unsafe for girls specially.. So girls be careful u too..!!

I think social networking helps to keep in touch with your dear ones. You can get topic of your interest and can broaden your knowledge. And apart from your busy work schedule you should have something which you can be enjoyed and which is also useful in your life.

I would like to take the middle way out and say that most sites have safety proceedures. That they are tedious to set is another matter. The networking and communication opportunities far outweigh the saftey concerns for most of us. Make use of the sites but take time to understand the consequenses of unsafe usage.
