We know most of the deaths in construction industries are of falling from heaights. Companies are taking care of safety of workers by adopting many practices, but often health part of it is either neglected or not given same importance as the safety issues, health effects are not seen immediately. because of this many construction workers including supervisors and engineers die of lung cancer and TB. Are the practices adopted safe enough for the health of the industry work force? WHat more has to be done?

Its a high time to go for standards for construction safety and implement for all construction works. Needs effective enforcement by government agency and close monitoring for all major and minor construction sites. Even all construction companies and builders to own the responsibilities, to keep their site free from injuries.
Safety professionals and NGO’s needs to spread construction safety, hazards involved in work and facilities required. Govt. should take further initiative for developing awareness among illiterate labour force migrating from various unorganised sectors.

Safety culture can not be made with a single day. From the school days onwards we have to start inculcating Safety culture and practices. Govt. should take a lead to incorporate the aspects in the curriculum. For the immediate purpose, the management of each construction company shall insist the safety standards to be implemented at site. In Saudi Arabia the organizations like ARAMACO and all make their own safety standards and insist that the contractors to get pre qualified before the tender is issued. Then they also monitor whether the standards are maintained at site. So a will is a must to ensure the safety at site. We all should acknowledge that Safety at the site is the responsibility of all;not safety departments alone. We shall remember this all the time. And also the safety's basic principle

Many companies have OSHA certificates but the standards are not protecting the health of the work force. Most of the projects are of tight schedules, pressure is on all the people from management down the line, to achieve the targets some times workers do not use proper PPE even though tool box talks are given. workers are not happy to use some of the equipments because they do not feel them effective.

Good health of workers means fewer mistakes in site and less accident. Healthy workers can give better out turn. But, the problem is that they never stick to one work place and hence the builders treat casually to them. There fore, we may consider health and man hour safety in construction site as two different aspect. Health of workers is a national property and government should think for health insurance etc. for all workers as a policy decision. In order to make the construction site accident free, the safety officer should be empowered to follow all the safety rules with out any kind of interference. He should be responsible for accident as well as should be rewarded for safe man hours.

If cost of construction is going to rise the cost of life is going to decrease and if cost of construction is going to decrease certainly life of labour will be more precious for the employers. No need to explain in detail I hope.

  • You are right Pragya, In addition need to bring awareness programs about safety by introducing weekly TOOL BOX meeting at Site.Need to generate empathy by Supervisors/foremans towards workers if worker has family issues inorder to avoid absentism at work by keeping those workers to less hazardous areaof workplace, to avoid accident at site. Also main important concern is to teach new workers about how to operate construction equipments, machinaries, tools before leaving them independentaly to operate. Also how to handle/carry blockworks n other heavy materials.

Yes the workers involved in construction field are most uneducated they don't know what to do in safety measure, even subcontractors labour contractor also coming in uneducated stage,by experience they are doing work.companies giving safety hooks but that was not connected with the nearby safety points. When accident occurs they feel, but before that they lost their parts.so safety should strictly followed by contract firm.one safety officer is not enough for one site so many peoples should be posted in single site.

i support Pragya'stipulations.it is high time that construction industries devote more time for safety. The certain percentage of their profit should be allocated towards health, insurance, and education.

Unfortunately, the truth is that all the safety officers are trained in Fire Safety & Industrial Safety, but no emphasis is laid in these institutes for the Construction Safety. They get trained only on site after employment. Even worse, the construction safety enforcing & governing bodies do not have the real intention to bring about safety among the workers. Further, every company lays emphasis to cover up the incidences spending big sums Instead probably the same big sums if put for training & providing better facilities, the incidences & accidents will reduce. Till such a concern percolates into the heart of every individual in the construction industry you cannot consider anyone safe, including the engineers & officers.

Construction work Worldwide is know for its Occupational hazards and deaths due to accidents on Construction sites are the topmost, yet in India we have touched upon only the tip of the Iceberg in terms of adoption of Health and Safety Standards in this industry and Legislation to protect the Health and Safety of the workers is merely on paper. Every company needs to have in place a Health and Safety policy, which will be signed of by the CEO and would be strictly followed, then only their lives will improve
