Practising what we know or pushing the boundaries of what we hope? Will the reduction of global energy consumption be enough to sustain current fossil-fuel reserves? Or should all efforts be directed towards discovering new technologies that broaden the world’s energy portfolio?

http://www.dailygalaxy.com/my_weblog/images/2007/09/10/energy_crisis_1_2.jpg

Which option is the more important to support, in the near term, by providing additional resources and enacting strong public-policy initiatives? Given that both efforts are currently being explored in parallel, where should the centre of gravity lie?

So, what would you go for - Conservation or Innovation..

The bad news is we can't wait for breakthroughs to solve our energy problems. The good news is we don't have to. If there's no action before 2012, that's too late. What we do in the next two to three years will determine our future. This is the defining moment. Those are the words of Rajendra Pachauri, the head of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) last November after the release of the IPCC's definitive scientific synthesis report on the state of the site of the understanding of climate change.

And Mr Pachauri is no alarmist. Indeed, the Bush administration successfully lobbied to install the engineer and economist as IPCC chair in 2002 after forcing out the outspoken Mr Robert Watson. But IPCC chairs aren't born alarmists—a sober study of the facts makes them that way.

So, I think we should go for conservation of energy....

There's no energy shortage; there's no energy crisis; there's a crisis of ignorance. With oil at more than $100 a barrel, carbon dioxide at 383 parts per million (ppm) and rising, China adding a coal-fired plant every week, and continuing Middle East tensions. We are addicted to fossil fuels. Coal and natural gas fire two-thirds of all power production and nearly all transportation uses petroleum. Nature isn't making any more oil, gas or coal, while the IEA forecasts energy demand will increase 50% by 2030. Business-as-usual is a recipe for disaster—for the global economy and our environment.

Scarcity of energy is a myth that persists in society, because our fixation remains on fossil fuels. Yet the resource potentials of solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, biomass and ocean energies are abundant far beyond our needs. The winds of the plains are sufficient to power all the electrical demand of India, and solar radiation from just 3% of the world's deserts could power all global demand. There is no shortage of renewable energy on our planet! While annual growth rates of 20-40% for geothermal, wind and solar are promising, their share of the energy pie remains less than 3%.

What is critical about today's energy challenges and solutions is the matter of scale and speed.Emergencies help us to focus. What's needed is a design-science revolution—not to tear down our society, but a design revolution, using the best of existing and new technologies to elevate all mankind to higher, sustainable living standards.

Till innovation takes place and new technology becomes commercially viable, we have to go for energy conservation only. don't forget, it is easy to conserve than produce.

Conservation and innovation - both! Unless we strive for innovative methods to conserve what is available, we may tend to end up in chaos! There are untapped areas in enery, viz., geo-thermal energy - a neglected area for a while. USA is spending billions of dollar on this! In our Vedas, there were clear-cut explanation on "geo-thermal" energy. There is a hot-spring reservoir underground the area of Sohna to Bahadurgarh. If we tap this energy, we can generate electricity which will cater to Delhi and Haryana without any problem. We need a national plan to device mechanics to derive such energy!

If you dont know what to conserve and how to conserve is it possible by any one to solve "Energy Crisis"? If you dont have innovation does it mean Energy ( Elect Power, Fuel, Renewable resources??) which one? My take is Govt should take away their myriads rules and regulations of energy dvelopment and consumption

Innovation for what? - Something which we don't know to conserve? And Innovation at what cost? - at the cost of depleting whatever we have? First let us learn what we are left with, leran to conserve it and wtry to be innovative in developing more efficeint technologies within the limited " Nature" we are left with. This is a mistake we "HUMANS" made before..... we always went for discoveries, inventions, innovations with really understanding "Conservation"...... Does one not have to learn to earn and save before he starts spending...????

we need to save enery from ourself first then we need to debate or discuss the issues such as a smilar things we need to do such as switch off the lights which one is not nessaary and switch off the engine during red lights and chatting with friends , so we can save lots of energy, thanks

i think innovation is key to solve energy crisis.Looking at current scenario, demand for energy will increase manifold as developing countries grow at fast pace.So conservation for cost cutting will always be there in focus, but innovation is need of our.And it is not so difficult looking at rapid improvements in technology.

I would certainly go with the conservation of the energy because this would be the first step rather than inventing new technologies. Conserving energy is immediate step to save energy and later on we can certainly look for the innovation. We can switch off all the energy for atleast 1 hour every day atleast we can implement to the domestic sector. We can also store rain water and solar energy.

Penny saved is penny earned. We can only hope for the future that some of the innovations will be implemented and our energy needs will be fulfilled. However, we can not take it granted. We can not be so selfish. We need to think about coming generations. Our children should also enjoy this mother nature. What is in our hands is the conservation and working on innovations & their implementations in parallel.

we cannot depend on conservation of enregy because of oru rapidly in creasing population. if population increases then to quench their demands we need more energy but majority of us depends on non renewable source of energy. we need fossil fuels to drive automobiles. so energy conservation is not a good idea in country like india where population is increasing rapidly.

It is need of today to invent new economical methods to harvest renewable energy than to conserve what we have. I support Indian goverments policy of increasing prices of petrol and alloting whooping budget for research in harvesting solar energy....thats the way we all should look at it...start innovating than conserving...or be ready for thitd world war for power........

we should find new source of energy like gas hydride i.e frozen methane gas found in abundance in sea floor, also we can use underwater turbine generators where water current below top surface of river is high, also we can create a solar wurz to be located where we can get maximum solar energy in a day, it will serve dual purpose - create power by using solar power and also filter air. if interested in my ideas i can send videos for it.

Innovation doesnt necessarily mean discovering new technologies. It can mean putting more resources into alternative means. Like for eg Solar power has still not been exploited fully even though temperatures are rising every other day. For thagt matter even Wind power. Jatropa is the latest kid on the block but we seems to be concentrating more efforts on depleting existing resources instead of putting our efforts more on these alternative energies which are available in abundance.

The Chinese term for 'crisis' is'danger-opportunity'.Without 'danger','opportunity' cannot come to the surface. So,it's 'innovation' that provides evolutionary approach to 'opportunity' to solve the crisis.'Conservation'advocates 'status quo' ,that prevents 'forward thinking'....

there is no limitation of energy in india the country which has the population of more than 100 crore where there is no space for transportation on road where there unlimited sound , light , heat is poduced to a very high way . if we consume all the three energy and make a device which can consume heat , sound & light energy can easily work for 24 hrs to provide heat , sound and light this can help in avoiding electricity problem , oil problem for transportation , gas and other things

INNOVATION... but CONSERVATIVE INNOVATION !

Lets face a hard fact today... Life is becoming harder by the minute & the comforts needed are becoming easier by the minute. We need so many gadgets from Morning to Night that it would be difficult to list them down. All of them Use Power / Energy.

Ask your own self... Can U do without these comforts ? NO can be the only answer. In this advancing lifestyle it would be more appropriate to Innovate rather than Conserve Energy. At the same time it is neccessary to Innovate Comforts which can Conserve some more Energy than their predecessors.

It is a very sweet thought to Say & to Agree that Yes, we should save energy. BUT who does it as a practice & the very few who actually do it, will they be able to make a difference ?

Today, people have no time to walk & maintain their physical state... SO, they use Walkers which either run on battery or power, which burn enough calories that walking would do, by just lying down or relaxing. We have gone so gadget crazy & lazy that now we use SHREDDERS to tear paper which we use to do by our hands earlier...

In such a scenario it is futile to even think about Conserving Energy...               WE SHOULD ONLY INNOVATE ENERGY !

Happy Debating Friends !

Its Innovation. But compared to innovation, implementing the innovation matters a lot. India is the hub of talented professionals and already lot of innovations underway and some implemented. to say few,

1) One person erected a power plant, to generate power from paddy husk. And the best part is he is supplying power to in and around 30 villages.(3 months old article)

2) Next an IIT graduate submitted a project to generate power from sewage. Basically through some bacterial reaction.(2 week old article)

3) Another aspiring engineering graduate, demonstrated how to generate power when ever a vehicle passes over a speed breaker.

These were only a few. There are lots of innovation already and also will come henceforth because India produces 20 to 30 lakh engineering professionals yearly. This means 30 lakh projects yearly.

So my underlining point is, Society will be benefited only when the innovations are transformed into reality. Thanks.

As the world's population is growing and the demand for energy is rapidly incresing conventional methods and conservation is not the solution for to meet the demands. i think currently only hydro electricity and nuclear power are the two major alternatives. But new innovations for alternate source of energy is the best method i feel.

Innovation in solar / wind / nuclear power gereration would allow:

1.  Large number of distributed energy sources

2.  Huge cost cutting in setting up, operational and maintenance costs

3.  Upgradation of existing sources

4.  Provide ("the best") challenge for new generation scientists/engineers/tech. developers for innovation

5.  Healthy competition for established industry and associated progress

Point is conservation is never a solution ever for anything. On a light note conservation is too say I have 1 cake and so that it does not finish I will only eat a little. This is a short term solution only as at one point it will finish.

Next comes the bigger point generation of energy is not like switching a light on and switching it off . Changes in generation may actually bring in more problems than actually solve them bringing in power surge.

On the contrary Innovation has been always a solution for long term for any problem. Starting it again on a light note. You may not have the right flour for baking the cake, but you can innovate to find out alternate flours and bake more cake . That is why innovation is so important. Coming down to energy requirement world around is working on alternate source of energy like wind / water/ tidal etc.

The summary is energy innovation is required for future and not energy conservation.
