I don't agree with Sheetal on this....a company runs on employees...without them no entity will exist. Hr is truly the important department no doubt about it...other come secondary.

Dear MR.Ravindra, pl. be informed you that even a robot kind of orgzn. set up requires to appoint right person for the job.  Human Stress can be avoided through HR in various methods.  Harmony is maintaining among robot type of orgzn only thru HR.  Otherwise, the expenses will be increased or sales will be decreased.  A single person may spoil the whole orgzn. Ofcourse, we are discussing about Coporate of Pvt. firms, not Govt. side orgzn.

HR is the only dept. who values human as Assets. Hence, no doubt, this is the real side of a orgn. The education alone can not gives you the right person for the right job. But by interview a person in various modes of ope randy, the HR person will select the right candidate for the job.

HR is the real side of an organization. They decide whom to hire and whom not to. They play a key role in the policy making of the company. They bring in new strategies to retain the talents with the company. Over a period of time, they become the face of the company itself.

If they are good in selecting good candidates for various departments, then they

should consider themselves as important than other dept.

But they should remember that failure of that candidate is also failure of their

approach/process.

Shame for inflating one specific section/department. All sections play key role in furthering interest of the organization. Imagine a situation wherein no sweeper turned up for duty? Will you be able to perform in a messy ambiance?

While supporting your words, let me tell you something which is good for us.  A business unit is like a human body comprises of head, legs, hands, etc. So, that business should comprise of all the departments like HR, FInance, Marketing, etc.  In which HR may consider as Head of this business unit to undergo easy and steady growth alongwith other organs.

hr binds the organisation representing values of organisation through hr policy, procedures, personal touch etc. people join through hr selection, induction, training, etc and leave with the touch of hr accounts well settled/not settled, farewells, etc carrying the sweet/bitter taste. ofcourse the accounts department too has critical contribution here being supportive of hr objectives of the organisation.

attitude of the top management represents what hr is able or not able to do for the organisation and the people - ofcourse organisations could have greater expectations from hr which hr may not be able to implement owing to certain gaps somewhere.

however hr need not have monopoly over the soft side of the organisation - all managers in their own right need to represent the values of the organisation and handle people with care promoting employee engagement, talent development and retention - making the organisation one large integrated family sharing emotions being supportive towards each other while influencing the management upwards towards a people friendly organisation enabling overcome grievances making the work place the best place to work for.

thus although hr has the role to integrate the organisation and it's people through various hr processes like recruitment, training, performance appraisals, welfare and community welfafre activities, etc etc - it is the collective responsibility of the managerial leadership to make the organisation an ideal community of people making work enjoyable - involving people, communicating with them, providing the right job design and challenges, delegation, team building, rewards and recognition without favoritism, leadership by example, and above all representing the organisation values and goals consistently in an inspiring manner influencing people down the line positively.

thus hr fortunately or unfortunately represents the face of the organisation and needs to strive the best even amidst constraints, while top management needs to provide the leadership and the managerial community needs to live upto the organisational values including people values without getting lost too much in the hard targets - rather achieving them through people, making the stay of their team members ever cherishable alike a coach and mentor all the time leading to organisation development through people development.

thus hr is the real side of the organisation inclusive of all departments as a common thread through organisational behaviour of all managers put together, and need not be the monopoly of hr department as such - the organisation gets the hr department it deserves in terms of the hr team, investment of time by top management and the managers in people, investment in systems and infrastructure enabling people perform, learn and grow with the organsiation at all times - making each employee brand ambassador of the organisation ever. humble regards.

The organization is just like a zigzaw puzzle. various pieces go to make up the entire picture. No one functionality is more or less important that the other. Properly integrated functioning is one of the sources of the synergy that makes an organization a formidable entity in the market place. It is actually a bit sad that HR is under emphasised in many organizations.

Dear Friends in discussion,

Hope nobody is assuming HR can operate without a product or service. Requirements vary from business to business, a robot managed setup will not require much of HR you may agree. So no point trying to compare without coordinates.

There are many successful small scale industries that does not even have a HR person, forget a HR department. Yes, at some point for an organization to grow a good HR team is required to acquire and retain talent.I would put it this way,"Requirement of HR is directly dependent on the size of the organization."In smaller organizations, the super boss acts as the "Good and guiding soul" while in larger organizations he will definitely need a team to ensure the right message reaches everyone.

I too am of the opinion that all departments are important for the survival of an organisation. In some industries, where labour/workmen related problems  recur, the role of HR comes to the fore. In such situations, it is observed that HR/IR personnel work as EYES & EARS of the management resulting in  the situation getting worse or somertimes BETTER. Barring such isolated or stray instances, in general, all are as good/as bad as the others.

Nope it depends from industry to industry. For eg. in the project management field and real estate - hr is the most important as most of the functions are HR lead. But holistically speaking every department is as important as the next one. for an organisation to grow and be known in its field - all departments have to work in unison like an orchestra.

A company is a legal entity and it is a master/main system as a whole which has various departments as sub-systems.Any problem in the subsystem will affect the main system. Hence all sub-systems form the main system. Therefore all are equally important and performing their duties and responsibilities assigned to them. Results are achieved by group efforts and not by any single.

Thanks for the referral Mr.Alex Fernandes and Ms.Sheetal Jadhav.

No department can work independently all departments are interdependent and interrelated to each other, an organisation cannot work and grow until all the departments closely work together towards a common goal of making the organisation grow. So all departments are equally importantant and HR has the responsibility that they should maintain this equilibrium and hence play a very vital role.

One remembers the story of 5 blind men and also a child hood story about which part of human body is most important, each blind man thinks the part he has explored is the elephant in blind men story, similarly each human part thinks its work is more important what other parts are doing. Each and every department is important in its own way. The claim that one department is most improtant and the others are not only encourages enmity between departments leading to ego clashes and spoiling the atmosphere of the organisation. HR people should know this better than the personnel of other departments.

Every department / unit has a specific role to perform and each department is important in its own way. Information Technology, Finance, Accounts, HR, Premises, Mails, etc are support departments whereas Sales, Marketing, Production, etc., are Profit / Cost centres. Telling that HR is more important than others is like telling that eyes are more important than brain, mouth, limbs, heart, etc.

An Organisation is nothing but a "Whole" of ALL its "Parts" , ie; the different Functionalities....Each one has its own significant role to play in the overall scheme of Management..But depending on the Nature & Type of Organisation, the importance of these functionalities can vary . For example, in a Recruiting and Placement Agency , HR will obviously be the most important function, but in and Investment Mgmt: Company , Finance will be the one , and so on...

Yes i agree with Sheetal. All departments are equally important. What is in the mind of Varun? Perhaps,he is doing MBA,and he is charmed by HR. Of course the importance of HR  can not be discounted, but business runs on strong foundation of equiv-distribution of assignments.
