As HR responsibility to walk along with company ethics & policy, but we have seen in the industry, that still companies are still follow the traditional rules for running a company, like without any reason fireing of candidate, caste, religion discriminition etc, but in their policy they wrote everything good & use standard industry policy but in practice they differ, so in that case what should the HR head will do, should he go as per company ethics & policy or as per HR ethics & principle.B'coz if the person go aginst company definitly he will loose job, so mostly they are with wrong, but as a professional is it right.

I do not see any way a company can go against law i.e. have ethcics that are against laws of the land. It is the responsibility of each HR employee to know the laws and not go against laws. Implicit fear or coercion to violate the law cannot be an excuse to violate the laws. How can any management ignore anyone stating that a practice is unlawful and hence he cannot execute?

Ethics is a fundamental policy. There should be common ethical values which form the backbone of the functioning of an organization. It is not possible to have seperate ethics for each functionality in an organization. Ethics and code of conduct are central values.

It is however, possible to have centralised ethics and values and tailor them to each functionality in an organization.

Company ethics and policies are the governing principles and are a larger entity, HR ethics and policies are part of it. Though HR being a critical function plays the role of a guardian of company ethics and policies, company policies and ethics are always over and above HR policies and ethics.

I completely agree, that its tough to implement, but thats our profession, to make convince the management, make them aware about right or wrong. But at last it should be done, thats should be our profession committment towards our profile.

the role of HR in companies' ethics management efforts is always problematic. Companies should in fact become more ethical because it's a concern shared by people at all levels within the business hierarchy. The vast majority of companies, particularly larger ones, should follow a written standards of conduct comprising employer-employee's interest...

I agree, I see HR is in a fix and need to protect their own jobs too. HR was created to counter the threat unions created managing to alienate both employees and management. Now HR has become a weak shadow of the management, pitifully moaning to the employees on it's ineffectiveness to shield and stand up for the employees as needed.

Solutions? Maybe a 'protected' HR community site/organization external to all companies that ALL HR must be a member of (like CA) that can bear pressure on managements to be ethical. Maybe even such an organization can be a force to advise and drive governments to action to change labor laws and implement them effectivly.

Dear Kannan,

Its true what you are saying, but still in practical, this unetical practice is going on, HR people are trating themselves as other employees, & organization specially sme's are doing this practice & HR people are looking this silently, b'coz they do not want to get out of job. Now my question is how we can make awareness & stop these practices. I understand, that organization always comes first, but why HR people are not taking initiatives for it, that the measure question, only for the sake of money or job, how they can accept the wrong thing & implementing the same.

A company should be run with HR ethics and policies by default, but it has been observed that many a companies go beyond the HR ethics to fulfill their appetite. This is by no means a fair practice but followed in many organizations.

I belief we should go as per HR ethics & principle, b'coz we can change job, but we cannot change our principle, a person without principle is like river without water, river has no importance without water, in the same manner if the person dont have its own principle & ethics, no body will give a respect to him & loose credibility in the market.
