Dictionary.com gives the meaning of manipulation as follows :

  1. (tr) to handle or use, esp with some skill, in a process or action: to manipulate a pair of scissors
  2. to negotiate, control, or influence (something or someone) cleverly, skilfully, or deviously
  3. to falsify (a bill, accounts, etc) for one's own advantage

Though normally the word connotes a negative sense, it is also used in a positive sense. If a person influences another or others in order to achieve his pre set goal, then it is manipulation. The set goal might be good or bad. If it is for good it is called “Motivation". It might be an officer using his staff to achieve the monthly targets. This too is a form of manipulation.

And yes, Humans definitely can be and will be manipulated. Our politicians Manipulate the voter (aam admi) to come to power. The aam admi gets some freebees during the election and votes for the party who provides him with all the goodies. This is mass manipulation.

Hence, manipulation existed, exists and will exist till human beings are there and each time humans will fall for these manipulations. Also to remember is the fact that the manipulated also will manipulate others.

Nobody is getting a free ride today...people are selfish and they think about themselves first and then others...even if one is really close and if they think they can be easily taken for a ride then they are in for a shock and people who trust somebody blindly can be manipulated and not everybody...but in today's time there are hardly people left like that who have a blind faith.

Well said Sibal. Quite true... Everyone manipulates or at least attempts to manipulate in order to get his/her wishes satiated. This starts right from a very very little age of 1 year or even earlier.

Hopefully I should be able to manipulate other members' votes by voting for this side of human manipulation. I see that Narayan has already manipulated my thought process that led me to vote for him as well as for the topic itself.

In that case the entire universe is a manipulation by itself. If I were to be really determined not to get manipulated by others or other objects, I will end up being static and would be considered as good as dead. Banks a/c are manipulated, Audits are manipulated, Movies are manipulated, Stories are manipulated, Mark sheets are manipulated, Products are manipulated, My vote too has been manipulated...Now are you being manipulated...Vote and get yourself manipulated.

The fasted, easiest and dirtiest way to manipulate a person is by emotional blackmail. This will work every time. May give you the results that you want or may be directly 180 degrees opposite. Will always give results.

Our Prime Minister, who was considered to be one of the highly respected, modest with the great education background, could not be spared by his own cabinet colleagues and manipulated to an extent that the very institution has lost its credibility. In such a situation, how can one consider the others to be an exception in the corrupt world?

Let us not generalise every thing. The world is just a reflection of the mental make-up, social upbringing and so many other inhibitions that we hold on to. Do we not come across autodrivers who return the valuables left by the customers? Are there not people who admit an injured stray dog? Let us not call the unpleasant happenings as characteristics of Kaliyuga. Positivity needs to be spread.

Every human being has a conscience which cannot be influenced by an external agency. It is the manipulation of events by some witty people that create conditions which dissuade people from the right path. When the person comes out from the arena he behaves as per his conscience and does all that is possible to retrieve the situation. Again the degree to which a person is able to withstand external pressure varies from person to person and the situation. It is incorrect to state that humans are easily manipulated.
