Hysteria, in its colloquial use, describes a state of mind, one of unmanageable fear or emotional excesses. The fear is often caused by multiple events in one's past that involved some sort of severe conflict; the fear can be centered on a body part or most commonly on an imagined problem with that body part. Disease is a common complaint; see also Body dysmorphic disorder and Hypochondriasis. People who are "hysterical" often lose self-control due to the overwhelming fear.

Psychiatrists and other physicians have in theory given up the use of "hysteria", replacing it with more accurate terms such as somatization disorder.

Its really hard to believe Hysteria is caused by fear of women, I mean how can this attribute to some disorder, just because one is afraid of women, its got to do more with the psychological problem than anything else, and may be as a kid or at certain age one would have gone through some sort of trauma which might be causing this and has nothing to do with women infact, its a disorder in people and people can get help for this sort of symptom and I don't know whether its right to get into assumptions as fear of women causes hysteria. It would be great if you could explain the women part in causing hysteria in people......

There are reason for the hysteria but various people have various cause of hysteria so it may be one of that....

Alright, so I have a debate coming up in which I have to argue that yes, the Salem witchcraft hysteria was caused by a fear of women. I don't believe in this view, but it's the one I must debate, so..

I do agree with darshana parimala and all of those who given views in favor of No regarding article. obviously it caused because psychological imbalance in anybody mind not at all fear of women.

Hysteria is a psychological state, wherein the mind of a person gets affected by unmanageable fear or emotional excesses. Though it occurs in both the sexes, the incidence is more apparent in young women between fourteen and twenty five years of age. People struck by hysteria have less or no control over one's acts and emotions and undergo sudden seizures of unconsciousness, with emotional outbursts every now and then. Such a behavior results in repressed conflicts within the person's inner self. Though anxiety is the main cause for hysteria, there are certain other reasons for its occurrence as well. I agree with Darshana. It is not caused by the fear of women. It never has been and it never will be. Hysteria can be caused by and linked to different things. Someone that has a fear of women has others issues BUT it can be a part of that someone's personal hysteria.

The hysteria or somotization disorder is caused by pent up demands not met with by family,inlaws, and peers.It has been attributed to women because of  their genetic make up and breaks out when limit of endurance reaches.The endurance in women reaches early because they are under tremendous  pressure and are rarely heard.
